The Everest Carnival continues at Randwick this Saturday where it is Spring Champion Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out six metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:15) Young Members Handicap (74) 1400m
1 Royal Celebration (Bet Now: $3.60 FAT ODDS) looks a great bet. Ron Quinton trains this colt, who resumed a fortnight back at Rosehill where he was wide no cover for the trip yet despite that hit the front and looked home but was pipped on the peg by Gem Song, who ran well in the Dulcify to frank the form. This looks a lovely race for him.
4 Nicco Lad (Bet Now: $9.00 FAT ODDS) probably lacks the class/brilliance of some of these but one thing he does have is a bit of ticker. Did plenty of work on speed last time at Canterbury but took the front and was there to be run down but showed great fight late to cling on and win. Needs to improve off that but who is to suggest he won’t.
2 Silent Explorer (Bet Now: $14.00 FAT ODDS) is a David Payne trained three year old who comes through the Gem Song race at Rosehill from a fortnight back. He got back and wide in the run and wanted to do a bit wrong in the straight but I thought he stuck on well in defeat when beaten just under three lengths. He’s a winning chance if he puts it all together.
Race 2. (12:50) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1600m
I’ll take a punt on 11 Bella Deluxe (Bet Now: $19.00 FAT ODDS) for Nick Olive. This mare is absolutely flying for the stable at the moment and comes to town in winning form having produced a brilliant finale from the back to win over the mile at Canberra. Was scratched from an easier race yesterday to be saved for this, and her wet track form reads very well.
3 Evopex (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Jim Jarvis trains this bloke, who hasn’t raced since August 18 in a Highway at this track/distance when doing a good job against the bias behind Butchoy. Couple of months between runs so this will be a good training effort, but his form prior was very good.
8 Rapture Miss (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) has to be seriously respected. Matty Dale trains this mare, who was good here in a Highway two back behind Gordon’s Leap before going to Moruya last week where she produced a brilliant finale to share the spoils with Arrows Destiny. Wet track and the mile looks an ideal recipe.
Race 3. (13:25) Schweppes Handicap (78) 2000m
It’s a throw at the stumps here via 14 Gentleman Max (Bet Now: $26.00 FAT ODDS), who is well and truly a swimmer so he gets conditions to suit here. He’s run really well at his past couple on firm ground, the latest in the Cootamundra Cup behind Dreams Of Paris. Only have to go back a few runs to see him swim in winning at Albury. 52kg, hard fit, in form, I think he’s worth an each way ticket.
1 Raqeeq (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS) has been up a little while for Chris Waller but I reckon a win is near. You could make a case he should have won a fortnight ago at Rosehill but had little to no luck in the straight when a narrow fourth to The Lord Mayor, beaten under a length. He’s a hard horse to trust but off last start, he’s right in the game.
10 Keep Up (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) looks a definite threat. Clare Cunningham has this bloke going well. He ran a credible fifth to Zourkhan two back on a Rosehill bog before going to Warwick Farm where he beat all bar the impressive stayer High Bridge. Hard fit now and that solid 2200m outing last time should leave him cherry ripe for this.
Race 4. (14:00) Cellarbrations Handicap 1400m
8 Doubt Defying (Bet Now: $7.50 FAT ODDS) is a son of Not A Single Doubt resuming for the Steve O’Dea stable. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Toowoomba Cup in the Autumn where he was on speed, doing work and just couldn’t quite see it out late behind Morendi. Good fresh record and for mine closed off well in a trial at Doomben.
If you like 3 Just Dreaming (Bet Now: $4.40 FAT ODDS), you just want to see a market push. She’s the class of the field, by some distance, and seemingly looks perfectly in at the weights. Autumn/Winter prep was overall solid in high quality events and her trials leading in have been quite good. Just want to see her hard in the market.
Interesting to see what 2 Torgersen (Bet Now: $11.00 FAT ODDS) does here. Chris Waller trains this gelding, who is first up here. He was a bit of a plodder when racing in Sydney so Waller sent him to Queensland and the horse turned his career around, winning a couple of races and performing much more consistently. Trials have been decent enough and can pull out a decent run first up.
Race 5. (14:40) Ecovis Clarke Jacobs Mile (88) 1600m
He’s a bludger but a likely wet track and lightweight certainly gives 13 Data Point (Bet Now: $5.00) a serious winning hope. He ran over the mile at Flemington last Wednesday and I thought he was quite good late behind an above average type in A Shin Rock. He’s a swimmer, and with only 49kg on his back, he’ll be popular.
If this was 2000m, 9 Zourkhan (Bet Now: $3.90) would take some beating. He ran over 1800m on the bog at Rosehill last time and landed some good bets with a pretty dominant win. Three winners have come from that race, which reads very well. Just coming back to the mile is the negative because I think he wants 2000m.
The value certainly lies with 12 Arraignment (Bet Now: $13.00). Was keen on him at odds last Wednesday at Rosehill over 1500m where he had the beaut run and looked the winner at the top of the straight, but he couldn’t quite go on with it. Tumbles 7kg in weight from that and being fourth up, he should be hard fit.
Race 6. (15:20) Roman Consul Stakes 1200m
I’ve learnt not to flick the Queenslanders when they come to Sydney and I think 9 Sesar (Bet Now: $8.00) will take beating here despite being first up. I had him penned down as a Derby horse after really catching the eye late over the mile in the JJ Atkins, but here he is at 1200m with the Coolmore likely to be his GF. He’ll love a fast run 1200m, which is what we will get here, and he looked sharp in a recent Doomben trial. Wet track no issue either.
10 Charge (Bet Now: $12.00) looks a leading contender at his best. Beat all bar Sandbar two back in the Rosebud before going to the Heritage where I thought J Mac rode a lovely race on the colt but had no answers late for the finale of Ragged Rascal. 1200m is the little query with him but I think he’s got the class to overcome that. Just needs the economical run.
I think on a firmer surface, 7 Legend Of Condor (Bet Now: $13.00) could be a sharp improver here. He has been freshened up since running midfield in the Run To The Rose. Didn’t appear 100% happy on the bog track but when eventually clear he did make good ground. If they go silly in front here, he could be back and having last look.
Race 7. (16:00) Spring Champion Stakes 2000m
I’m a big believer when it comes to 12 Frankely Awesome (Bet Now: $9.00). Made them look like camels on debut at Newcastle, a race which has produced subsequent winning form. This girl then went to a Class Two at Scone and ran outstanding late splits to bolt in. She looks a beauty and I’ll be shocked if she doesn’t measure up.
Most thought that 5 Dealmaker (Bet Now: $7.50) was in the spelling paddock but here he is. He hasn’t raced since the Stan Fox when beaten a lip by Tarka, and that form has clearly been franked by that horse and of course The Autumn Sun. Searching trial at Randwick to get his fitness up and he looks a really good staying prospect.
10 Purple Sector (Bet Now: $9.00) looks a really nice colt for the John Thompson team but like a few here, the query is has this come around too soon for him. Loved his maiden win at Kembla before going to the Dulcify where he closed off quite well albeit held up by Mickey Blue Eyes and Gem Son. The rise to 2000m should suit him perfectly and is a knockout chance at odds.
Race 8. (16:40) Angst Stakes 1600m
5 I Am Serious…(Bet Now: $2.90) gee she’s a beauty and I don’t think many would begrudge her a blacktype win. She’s run a couple of rippers at her last two starts but unfortunately for her, she’s bumped into Avilius. No horse of that class here, I don’t think, so she gets a great chance to get some blacktype success.
She lacks the class of some of these but a likely wet track and soft lead certainly helps the claims of 8 Mandylion (Bet Now: $9.00), who is yet to run a bad race this time in for the Gwenda markwell stable. Ran over 1400m at Rosehill a fortnight back and stuck on quite well in defeat I thought when third to Tip Top. Query at a strong mile, but loves a track with give, hard fit and in form.
A mare that will be strong late is 7 All Too Soon (Bet Now: $13.00). Was 2000-1600 last time here and I thought she worked home quite well from the back behind impressive winner Muraqeeb, who ran well in the Epsom. Reads well for this and she too comes back to mares grade. Just has to handle the class rise against some better performed females.
Race 9. (17:20) Winning Edge Merchandise Sprint (78) 1200m
10 Artie’s Dreamwinner (Bet Now: $3.30) a definite threat for mine here. Paul Preusker has this mare going really well at the moment, her latest run being four weeks back over 1400m at Caulfield when on speed and just failing to see it out when beaten narrowly by Bellaria/Mrs Gardenia. Looks the leader here and should give some cheek.
Giving respect to 5 Warranty (Bet Now: $3.00). The Snowden camp trains this mare, who just looked a fraction big in condition when resuming over this track/distance three weeks back but I loved the way she closed off her race behind Trekking, clocking some of the best late splits from the race. She is a second up winner and I suspect she’ll come right on from that.
16 Red Currant (Bet Now: $16.00) looks out of his grade but I think the wet track and light weight gives him an outside winning chance. He resumed here last Saturday and had no luck at all behind Maximus. Should have finished much closer. Family are a bunch of swimmers and I like the stable backs him up straight away.
