The Wagga Carnival wraps up on Friday, headlined by the Wagga Cup (2000m), which has attracted a quality field. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:40) Wagga Rsl Club Mdn Plate 1200m
2 County Kilkenny (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Tim Donnelly trains this son of Fast Company, that debuted at this track/distance back on January 5 when kept quite safe in betting but didn’t really finish the race off after getting every chance behind the speed. The form out of the race has been quite strong and he looked sharp in a trial win on the Riverside track here. I’m in his corner but not much confidence.
1 Bull Sluice (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a son of Rubick that is on debut for Darrell Burnet. He trialled a few weeks ago on the Riverside track here and I thought he moved quite nicely, leading throughout and had something in the locker to my eye. Off that, 1200m here at start one is fine, he lands on speed and should take running down.
6 Masters (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is one that I can entertain for wider multiples. Danny Williams trains this son of Dream Ahead, who has had two career outings, the latest being on November 28 at the Sapphire Coast when back and making up minor headway behind Discreet Miss. The stable is very hard to catch at times but I think sitting off a good speed, he’ll be strong late.
Race 2. (13:20) Toyota Forklifts Hcp (C3) 1000m
Market will be interesting but I think each way, you can’t go wrong backing 3 Pretty Woman (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) IMO. Matty Dale trains this mare, who resumes, having not raced since January 7 when struggling on the wet track at Rosehill in a Highway behind Pokerjack. Think firmer footing would be ideal for her to resume on and her best is clearly good enough. She’ll jump on the bunny and giving a decent sight.
8 Forms Of Fear (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) creates interest. Formerly with Annabel Neasham, he is having his first run for David Pfieffer and returns to racing as a gelding. He hasn’t raced since September 23 at Goulburn when getting a suck run behind the speed and loomed to win but couldn’t quite get there when a close up fourth to Spinosaurus. Trial win in March was very good, so the break between the trial and now is interesting. I’d watch the market.
2 Broadside Amour (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) resumes for Peter Maher and is capable with his best. He hasn’t raced since December 11 at Bendigo when near the speed and tired late, producing an end of prep run when down the track behind metro winner Electric Belle. Good fresh record and has trialled well leading in, plus gets an ideal map. Won’t be dismissing him.
Race 3. (13:55) 000 Plumbing Services (Bm58) 1300m
13 Stand Your Ground (Bet Now:ย $SP.00), I assumed, would head to the Queen Of The South, so running here I find interesting. That aside, she’s worth a throw at the stumps. Her racing pattern is horrendous given she flops out the back and has no early speed but she will be motoring late. Too far back last time and was never a threat but did make up solid headway. If she’s within range, she can launch and finish over the top.
9 Lockup The Kittens (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a Keith Dryden trained gelding that has done little wrong in three runs back from a spell. Loved the fight he showed to win at Canberra two back on Good Friday in what has turned out to be a good form race. Innes Jr rode him with a sit last time at the Sapphire Coast and was solid late without threatening when third to Celestial Doll. Has a gate to settle near the speed and is hard fit/in form.
3 Merc (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) has a shocking gate to overcome but hard to knock the way he’s going. He ran in a TAB Federal at Canberra over 1300m last time when chasing the speed and did a brave job to stick on like he did but was nabbed late by Unique Prince. Has run well at Wagga previously and if the gate isn’t an issue, he lands on speed, he’ll take beating.
Race 4. (14:35) Walsh & Blair Ctry Magic-Bm74 1200m
12 Almahero (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) gets the nod. Danielle Seib trains this gelding, who resumed with a bang at Canberra when wide no cover for the trip but he was trucking in the run and it was just a matter of Heywood pushing the button. Once he did, the gelding responded and drew clear late tow in well. Good test here but is a winner at the track and maps to get a sweet run in transit.
6 Participator (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a nice horse for Tim Donnelly that is one of the leading chances. Down the track in a Country Championships Qualifier before going here where he was a narrow second to Riddlero after being heavily backed, getting the suck run behind the speed and driving late to just miss. Much better 1200m horse than 1400m and with that in mind, is hard to beat.
4 Brothers Of Antrim (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is flying for Doug Gorrel and is one of the key chances. He is looking to make it three wins on the bounce, winning two back at Corowa before showing good fight to get the job done narrowly but impressively at Wodonga. More depth here, but should slide forward and take running down if he doesn’t have to spend too many petrol tickets from the wide gate.
Race 5. (15:10) Jrc Electr Serv Mtc Gneas-Bm74 1600m
3 Diesel (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a horse I have time for. Ben Brisbourne trains this son of More Than Ready, who comes through the Port Adelaide Guineas from a few weeks ago where he got a mile out of his ground and was never a threat but you had to like the way he found the line late in the piece behind Affaire A Suivre. If he’s within range on the turn, he’ll be strong late.
5 Long Tycoon (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and run a bold race. He did that when resuming at Newcastle and was there to be run down but kept finding under pressure to win, surviving a protest in the process. He does have a few loose screws upstairs but clearly has an engine and with good upside to come, he’s one of the leading contenders.
11 Duchy Of Cornwall (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a market watch for sure. Tim Donnelly trains this son of Hallowed Crown, that debuted with a dominant maiden win here before going to Goulburn where he was a short priced favourite but failed to fire and was very much on the plain side behind Iknowastar. Blinkers go on first time and has been kept up to the mark with a nice trial on the Riverside track here. Bred to appreciate a mile and Beasley sticks.
Race 6. (15:50) Byrne Trailers Qn Of Sth.-Bm66 1400m
12 Miss Faberge (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) should be suited back to 1400m for John Sargent. This filly was somewhat thrown in the deep end in the Princess Stakes at Doomben last time and was solid from the back without threatening behind Street Gossip. Like her back to 1400m, a truly run 1400m, and the depth here is nowhere near as strong.
1 Celestial Spirit (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) commands respect for GaiBott. She was kept quite safe in betting when resuming over 1200m at Warwick Farm where she was on speed and tried her guts out but being first up, her condition just gave way when third to Look Only. Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks, as well as a significant drop in depth. One of the main threats.
6 In De Summertime (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Keith Dryden trained mare that resumes, having not raced since December 24 at Randwick when wide with cover and not really getting involved when down the track behind Estadio Mestalla. The stable has been red hot the last couple of months, especially first up, so watch the market.
Race 7. (16:25) Wagga Cup 2000m
The gate is a nightmare for 12 Wicklow (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) but he has to be rated as one of the hardest to beat. He ran at Hawkesbury two weeks ago where Nash tried to make a sustained run from the back and loomed but couldn’t quite finish it off behind Palmetto. Unknown at 2000m but racing like it will be fine and given the ownership, this has clearly been a target race.
2 Great House (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is flying for Chris Waller and confident he takes this out. Definite pass mark fresh at Rosehill in the Doncaster Prelude before going to the JRA Plate where it was a brutally run race and he kept finding the line when fourth to Diamil. He’s got good room for improvement and up in trip, Waller polish, upside, timing, he has to be respected.
19 Iowa (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a lightly raced stayer heading in the right direction. Mark Newnham trains this import, who was backed with confidence at Doomben a fortnight back and under a peach steer from Tom Sherry, he was there to pounce at the top of the straight and was strong to the line in winning. 2100m here, a truly run 2100m, is ideal, he’s down in the weights and will be strong at the end.
Race 8. (17:00) Gallagher Insurance Brokers-C1 1200m
Open race to close out the Carnival. I think the each way bet is 3 Ovoid (Bet Now:ย $SP.00), who resumes for David Pfieffer. His last run came in early February when a maiden winner at Newcastle over 1300m where he led throughout and showed good ticker to fend them off and win because he was there to be run down but he found under pressure. Loved the way he went in a recent trial and maps to get a sweet run in transit.
10 Allaboutroy (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) commands respect. Bit of quality about his maiden win over 1000m here given he was wide no cover on speed but he trucked in the run before being clicked up and away he went, drawing clear for a dominant win. Gets a big upgrade with Josh Richards replacing Molly Bourke and off the first up win, 1200m should be fine.
2 Sir Ming (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Team Hawkes, he now finds himself with Danielle Seib. His best form likely sees him but gee he’s been hard to catch throughout his short career. That said, his recent trial on the Riverside track here was a pretty good piece of work and the stable have a great record with tried horses. Watch the market.
