SA racing on Monday heads to Gawler. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:40) Terrace Function Centre (c2) 2100m
1 Mr Pocket (Bet Now: $2.60), I dare say, has SA Derby aspirations, so with that in mind, he’d want to be winning this. Caught the eye late fresh at Murray Bridge over the mile behind Mavette. Then stepped up to 2000m at Strathalbyn and I thought he was a tad plain. Third up, hard fit with the claim…has to be winning.
3 Exalted Fire (Bet Now: $1.95) has had six runs on the bounce at around the mile so he’s certainly had a decent enough grounding for the 2100m. Last came last Saturday at Morphettville. Was on speed and fighting on strongly, just dying on the run late. Stable is going super and think he’s hard to beat.
2 My Golden Chain (Bet Now: $8.50) is on the quick back up after racing last Sunday at Oakbank over 1900m. He was on speed throughout and fought on very strongly. Kept finding under pressure and was only nabbed late by surprise winner Miss Hedy. Off that, the 2100m here should be fine.
Race 2. (13:15) Kingsford Hotel Mdn Plate 1500m
It’s 8 Courtlee Star (Bet Now: $3.80) or who knows. Team McEvoy trained filly that is on debut. Hasn’t been seen at the jumpouts since mid February, so a bit of guessing involved, but in the right camp, Blinkers on for the debut and as a whole, this is a terrible maiden with little to no depth. She’s the way to go.
4 Promesa D’Oro (Bet Now: $3.70) should appreciate a rise in trip. This son of Vancouver has had two career outings and has failed to fire a shot both times, but they have been over shorter trips and he has looked like a horse that would appreciate ground, which he gets here, and strikes a winnable maiden.
3 Whosezou (Bet Now: $4.60) is the watch horse. Ryan Balfour trains this Zoustar gelding who has had two starts. Caught the eye on debut behind Better at Balaklava. Then went to the Parks track and didn’t fire from off the speed behind Zero Inn. Tick over trial was a nice piece of work and has upside to come.
Race 3. (13:50) Sanders Fodder Mdn Plate 1200m
12 Point Blaze (Bet Now: $1.50) looks the one to beat. Shayne Cahill trained filly that is bursting to win her maiden and she gets a golden chance here. If you were on last start on the Parks track…apologies for bringing up the nightmare. She was bolting in the run but just couldn’t get clear air at any stage. Eventually did get out and charged to just miss. Flying, deserves a maiden and gets her chance.
14 She’s Stylish (Bet Now: $9.00) can be an improver here at odds. Resumed several weeks ago over 1000m on the Parks track in a solid maiden and she was far from disgraced in defeat behind Virtue, who hasn’t exactly gone on with it since. Trial since was a nice piece of work. Just needs luck from the draw.
If they were still racing at Port Lincoln, 10 Artful Libby (Bet Now: $10.00) would be a living, breathing in a maiden. Just not sure she’s up to this level of maiden but she has talent. Good in defeat last Saturday at Morphettville behind Spin The Reward, beaten just over two lengths. Must for exotics.
Race 4. (14:25) Adelaide Bloodstock (bm62) 1100m
1 Fabulous Flipper (Bet Now: $3.40) is a ripper for Brian Mueller that will put herself on speed and give her all. That was the case at Strathalbyn last time out and she did kick on strongly. Just couldn’t quite finish it off late when fourth to Ranger Cee Jay. Jump and run with the claim, she’ll take beating.
3 Annika (Bet Now: $2.90) gets in really well after the claim for Ben Price. This filly has been up a fair while but continues to hold her form nicely. She ran over 1100m at Strathalbyn last time out where she was near the pace throughout and fought hard, just couldn’t quite see it through and had to settle for a second to Ranger Cee Jay, the same race as above. Hard to beat.
7 Kishstar (Bet Now: $14.00) is a knockout chance. Gary Searle trained mare that resumes, having not raced since Oaks Day when a solid fifth over 1200m here. Blinkers first time for the resumption signals intent to my eye and from gate one, Stubby should be able to hold a decent spot off what looks a good tempo.
Race 5. (15:00) Holdfast Insurance (bm62) 1700m
Any hint of improvement from the resumption by 6 African Awesome (Bet Now: $5.00) and he looks the one to beat quite clearly. Resumed over 1350m at Strathalbyn and gee he was good from the back when a close up second to a solid mare in Magic Dee. Fitter, up to 1700m, more upside than most…surely he’s the one.
Back up in trip I like for 9 Mavette (Bet Now: $5.00). He put together a couple of strong wins at the mile before coming back to 1400m on the Parks track last time and worked home pretty well late behind Neodium. African Awesome looks the standout. If there is an upset, think it will come by this guy.
10 Regal Domain (Bet Now: $10.00) lacks the class of some of these, but does come here as a last start winner, which was a maiden over the mile at Balaklava. Sat on speed and was there to be run down, but found enough under pressure to fight them off and win. Gap to third was a positive and she’ll give herself every chance.
Race 6. (15:40) Gj Civil Hcp (c2) 1100m
11 Comiendo (Bet Now: $13.00) doesn’t have the greatest of racing patterns, but there looks to be a stack of speed engaged here, so she’ll get her chance to wind up and finish over the top. Last run came several weeks ago at Penola. Was four wide no cover for the trip and fought on really well to finish fourth. Only 52kg on her back, think she’s a great 1×3 play at odds.
2 New Roman (Bet Now: $2.90) has done little wrong this time in for Andrew Clarken. Good second fresh on the Parks track before bolting up at Murray Bridge after sitting five wide throughout. He then went to the Parks track again and fought on strongly when second to Hypersonic. This is a winnable race. Just a matter of what pressure he cops.
10 Confinement (Bet Now: $34.00) isn’t one of mine, but she’s a consistent animal that is rarely far away from the prize. Took forever to break her maiden tag and it finally came at Port Lincoln, surging hard late to grab them in the last stride. Tricky draw, but good speed in front so she’ll get her chance.
Race 7. (16:20) Coopers Brewery Barossa (bm66) 1500m
Good little race this with a host of chances. The safe option looks to be 7 Sadente (Bet Now: $4.20) for Andrew Clarken. Tough, strong winner two back over 1400m at Murray Bridge. Then went to 1550m on the Parks track and was excellent against the pattern when a closing second to Angaston. Just has to hold her form to be going close.
I’m not 100% sold on 2 Neodium (Bet Now: $3.00) beyond 1400m. Yes, won over the mile at Murray Bridge, but he walked in front and turned it into a 600m sprint. He has been impressive his past couple when on speed and rolling, both on the Parks track, which has been the spot to be. Harder here, but racing well.
I’m definitely going to include the John Hickmott trained 6 Turf Man (Bet Now: $31.00), who does have more upside than most and a truly run 1500m will be ideal for him. Firm2 at Bordertown last time, he was several weeks between runs…just think he was found out with that set up but still closed off alright. Fawke rides him better than most and has upside.
Race 8. (17:00) Coopers Brewery (bm54) 1200m
4 When Stars Align (Bet Now: $3.50) gets his chance to get a win on the board. I think he has been excellent in all three runs this time in, all of which have come on the Parks track, and he is a horse who gets back, so that track doesn’t suit him. Track should playing more fairly this time around and only has to hold his form to just about be winning.
The lone career win for 5 Bad Moon Rising (Bet Now: $7.50) came second up last prep, and he is second up here, so the pattern is there to suggest he runs well. Resumed on that very firm deck at Bordertown. Never likely from the back but did make up ground late. He’ll be strong late off a reasonable tempo.
10 Arctic Blaze (Bet Now: $6.00) hasn’t won in a little while but is racing well. Ran over 1200m at Clare a month ago when wide no cover for the trip. Kept finding under pressure and was good in defeat when second to Eurogem. She can sit off a genuine tempo and be strong at the end. Knockout chance.
Race 9. (17:40) Tab (bm54) 1200m
9 American Storm (Bet Now: $7.00) for me here in what looks a competitive race to close out the meeting. He was met with really good market support when resuming at Bordertown on a very firm deck. He got back off the speed and chased strongly, but couldn’t take the necessary ground off. He’ll come on from that and do have to respect the sustained market push fresh, suggesting he’s come back well.
1 Hi Smokey (Bet Now: $3.40) will put himself on speed and try his heart out. That has been the case the past two, winning the maiden two back at Naracoorte before going to Strathalbyn where he led and copped pressure, but stayed on and was sound in defeat behind Better. Blinkers on, suspect him to go out in front and roll.
8 Riched (Bet Now: $6.00) can run an improved race at odds. Team Jolly trains this three year old, who hasn’t quite set the world on fire this time in, but have to remember they have been in races which were much stronger compared to what he faces here. Can bounce back into positive form without surprising.
