Nine races have been set down for Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:08) St Patricks Day Festival 19/3 1110m
Lot of unknowns here. Gate one, dominant trial win, I’ll side with 3 Russian Racketeer (Bet Now: $4.40). He’s on debut for Les Kelly off the back of a spank job trial win at the Gold Coast over 900m last week. Unfortunately there is no replays for that trial session (It’s 2022 isn’t it?) so I’m only going off times/margins, and he stacked up well. Happy to be in his corner.
4 Sidestep Me (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Sidestep colt for Team Edmonds that is on debut. He trialled the same morning as Russian Racketeer, his trial being over 1000m and running second in solid time relative to the morning. Draws to get a good run in transit but I’d watch the market.
2 Executive Stress (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Better Than Ready on debut for Desleigh Forster. He trialled a few weeks ago here and I didn’t mind the way he is going about his business when a strong second in pretty solid time. The break between the trial and debut is a slight concern, but have to respect the stable.
Race 2. (13:43) Sky Racing (bm78) 2200m
6 Takeittothelimit (Bet Now: $21.00) has really good form at this track/distance and I do think she has been looking for this trip. Last few runs have come over 2000m, the latest being two weeks back here when good late from near last behind Sciconic. The 2200m looks ideal and hopefully can sit closer in the run.
1 Stuck With You (Bet Now: $4.00) has been in work a fair while but gee he is holding his form superbly. Last two starts have resulted in wins at this track, the latest being at the midweeks when knuckling down strongly late to get the job done. You keep waiting for the end of prep, but he seems to be getting better as the prep goes on.
3 Continuation (Bet Now: $9.50) has been up a while but continues to race at a pretty good level. He was back in trip at the mile two back when far from disgraced before racing here a fortnight back and was good late without threatening behind Sciconic. Has won up to 2100m and the way he races, 2200m here should be fine.
Race 3. (14:18) Brc Membership Hcp 1200m
3 Roman Aureus (Bet Now: $2.10) is an absolute beauty for Brian Wakefield that does save his best for the Doomben 1350m and that was well and truly confirmed with a strong win here two weeks ago. He was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure and kicked hard to win. Has to be respected whenever he races at Doomben and gate one, Blinkers first time, he’ll be strong late.
4 Constant Flight (Bet Now: $4.80) has a fab record at Doomben and can bounce back. He contested the Magic Millions Snippets three weeks ago when doing plenty of work to sit on speed and tiring late when down the track behind Isotope. Much better suited at this level, so look for an improved showing.
2 Colpo Di Tamburo (Bet Now: $10.00) is flying this time in. He won three out of four runs before contesting the Magic Millions QTIS when thrown in the deep end and just found it a bit rich behind Wisdom Of Water. Off his prior efforts, I think he will take beating against these.
Race 4. (14:57) Cascade Hcp 1350m
5 Cool Lad (Bet Now: $4.20) looks the best on the card. Matty Smith trained colt that is flying at the moment, winning his past two. Bolted up on wet ground two back at Nowra before finding a firm deck at Wagga and he was even more impressive. Gate one, hard fit, in form, all points to him.
8 Merimee (Bet Now: $11.00) should be improved for the first up run, which came over 1350m at Doomben where she paraded like she would need the run and that’s how it panned out when down the track behind Harlequin Field. Run under the belt, her best is good enough to beat these.
Fitter and up to 1350m are two big ticks for 9 Red Wave (Bet Now: $9.00), who resumed two weeks back here where he paraded like he would need the run and that’s how it panned out. He was off the bit a fair way out and just whacked away late. Fitter, up in trip, an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 5. (15:37) Girls Day Out 12 March (rs0mw) 1110m
5 Daltoro (Bet Now: $8.00) comes here with fresh legs for Kris Lees, having not raced since December 22 when racing over 1000m at the Sunny Coast, sitting near the speed and just feeling the pinch late when third to Global Citizen. Tick over trial was a good piece of work, so he commands respect.
3 Gogol (Bet Now: $3.80) is bursting to win a race in town for Les Kelly. He charged late here two weeks ago but just spotted them too much head start when second to impressive winner Kingston’s Here. He is capable of sitting much closer in the run so hopefully that eventuates here.
4 Mort Doyle (Bet Now: $14.00) deserves another chance. He was hunted up to hold a spot here last time out and with the juice in the track, the 61kg impost, he couldn’t sustain it and tired late. He seems more effective when ridden a touch more conservatively so keen to see how he goes if that does happen.
Race 6. (16:17) Xxxx Dry (rs0mw) 1110m
Playing a straight bat with 10 Rich Lister (Bet Now: $3.30). Genuine mare for the O’Dea/Hoysted camp that resumes, having not raced since October 6 here when a game third to dominant winner and the then in form Neutron. Ran sharp time in a recent trial win at Deagon so I say she comes here ready to rock and roll, plus gate one, in well after the claim…keen.
7 Shanjomi (Bet Now: $6.50) is a daughter of Dream Ahead for Matty Dunn that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since September 11 over 1200m here when a game fourth to Lasting Kiss in a solid effort to end a fruitful prep. She has trialled up really well and finds a winnable metro race.
4 Cossie (Bet Now: $21.00) is racing really well at the moment for John Wallace. Attempted to lead throughout over 1200m here two weeks back and tried hard, but six furlongs at this level just found her out when a tiring fourth to Bad Barista. Back to 1110m is a big tick and she’ll run a bold race from on speed.
Race 7. (16:57) Tab Venue Mode Plate (c3) 1350m
5 Palladas (Bet Now: $1.75) is knocking on the door big time for Tony Gollan. He charged late here two weeks ago, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to the ever consistent Roman Aureus. He has been a bit costly this prep but betting hat off, he’s going well without winning. I think that changes here.
13 Glitter Strip (Bet Now: $3.80) is close to a win. Was keen on her last time out at this track/distance and once she got the inside split in the straight, I thought she was the winner, but the inside section just wasn’t the spot to be and that stopped her finishing it off IMO. Ready to win and gets her chance.
2 Bells Approaching (Bet Now: $67.00) can threaten if the first two are off their game. Resumed over 1200m here at the midweeks and finished off his race with real purpose from near last on the turn behind Cossie. Gets in really well the claim and from gate two, he’s in with a big shout as a first four threat.
Race 8. (17:33) M.m. Gc March Catalogue (bm85) 1350m
1 Never No More (Bet Now: $9.50) has had a few homes throughout his career. He’s now with Matty Dunn and albeit a short sample size, I think he is enjoying his new surroundings. Completely unwanted in betting fresh at the Gold Coast but he ran out of his skin when a close up third to Sea Raider in a driving go. His best would see him win this and off the first up run, he’s not far off producing that.
3 Sir Rocket (Bet Now: $5.50) is racing really well this time in for Michael Costa. Class got him home two back in the Magic Millions Country Cup before backing up a week later in the Magic Millions Cup and he ran a super race in defeat behind Eleven Eleven. Hard to beat with luck from the draw.
6 Tavion Prince (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Tavistock for Tony Gollan that resumes. He hasn’t raced since August 7 when racing over 2200m here and running another honest race behind a progressive stayer, London Banker. He has a fab record here, can sprint well fresh and has trialled in good order. Watch the market.
Race 9. (18:15) Stradbroke Season On Sale-bm78 1615m
Fitter and up to the mile are two big ticks for 3 Stardome (Bet Now: $5.00). Chris Waller trained galloper that resumed over 1350m here two weeks back where he wasn’t expected to do a great deal hence the $101 SP but I thought he ran a super race behind Roman Aureus. Might want one more, but hard to ignore the resumption.
12 Ocean Treaty (Bet Now: $7.50) has a good second up record and gets a rise in trip so she ticks a couple of boxes. Forget her first up run at the Gold Coast where she drew gate one and by race nine, the track nearer the inside was a complete no go zone. Not sure she wins, but include for exotics.
4 Exclusive (Bet Now: $5.00) is third up from a break and should just about be at peak fitness for Lee Freedman. He ran over 1350m at Ipswich last time out where he was crunched in betting but wasn’t helped by the race shape behind Zigallene. Like him up in trip and gets the in form Kyle Wilson-Taylor to steer.
