Eight races have been set down for Sandown Hillside on Wednesday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is out twelve metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:40) Ive > Print Mdn Plate 1000m
8 Duchy Of Savoy (Bet Now: $1.80) should start punters off with a win. She just looks to have too much class on this lot for Team Hawkes. Had a three run prep in the Winter, the latest seeing her far from disgraced in defeat in the Quezette behind Gimmie Par. Looked sharp in a recent Canterbury trial and I do think class will come to the fore.
3 Heir Apparent (Bet Now: $4.00) looks the best of the rest. Resumed for Danny O’Brien at Kyneton when wide no cover for the trip but stayed on strongly, just nabbed late when second to Live In Hope. Draws to get a good run near the speed and does have the fitness edge over the favourite.
4 Square Cut (Bet Now: $46.00) deserves another chance. He was just too bad to be true fresh at Moe. Looked to get a good run on speed but as soon as pressure was applied, he went backwards and failed to fire a shot. Did show some promise as a juvenile, so I’m prepared to give him another look.
Race 2. (16:15) Ladbroke It Mdn Plate 1400m
7 Straight Arron (Bet Now: $3.80) on top. Chris Waller trained son of Fastnet Rock that is on debut. He had a Winter prep without a run, just two trials. Spelled and has come back for this prep with one trial, which was at Canterbury, and gee he looked to move nicely under J Mac. Interesting placement here, but I think he can make a winning debut.
8 The Economist (Bet Now: $2.40) is the pick of the raced brigade. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where he worked home strongly from off the speed, just missing out on picking up handy galloper Oughton. Maps to get a soft run in transit and should be around the mark.
5 Ocean Raider (Bet Now: $8.00) can be an improver here at odds. Debuted over over 1300m here when back nearer the inside and seemingly never a winning factor, but didn’t mind the way he stuck to the task in defeat behind Lucky Decision. Reckon he’ll want 1600m+, but should be strong late.
Race 3. (16:50) Ladbrokes Switch Hcp (c1) 1500m
1 Lucky Decision (Bet Now: $2.15) for me. The Peter Moody stable is absolutely flying at the moment, especially with horses on debut/first up, which this guy was when breaking the maiden tag over 1300m here three weeks ago, driving hard from off the speed and powering clear late. Off that effort, he’ll eat up 1500m here and the depth, as a whole, isn’t strong.
8 Unforgiven (Bet Now: $4.80) is a progressive youngster for Team Freedman that comes here as a last start maiden winner at Yarra Valley where he was ridden like he was the best horse in the race, sitting wide, with clear air from the outset, and he was far too good for them. Not sure he’s good enough to beat Lucky Decision but should be around the mark.
4 Kaptive (Bet Now: $12.00) can be an improver here at odds. Resumed over 1300m here two weeks back when dragged back to near last from the wide gate and while he was never really a winning factor, his finale was more than sound I thought for a horse wanting further, which he gets here, so an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 4. (17:25) Ladbrokes Easy Form (bm64) 1300m
3 Murrami Express (Bet Now: $2.30) looks the pony to bet on. Several key chances here come through the Squid Game race at Flemington from Dec 18, including this guy. Market support suggested he was there to run a positive race and that he did, with condition just giving way late when third. Fitter, gate one, he’ll do me.
4 Capo Strada (Bet Now: $5.50) comes through the Squid Game race as well. The race shape just wasn’t to his liking, which is the norm for the straight races. Sit up then dash for 500m, which this horse just didn’t like, so want to be forgiving of his effort. Like him up in trip and is a definite winning chance.
5 Crystal Vain (Bet Now: $5.50) should be suited. Rode him warm when racing over 1200m at Flemington last time but it probably backfired in the end when tiring late behind Squid Game. A more conservative steer I’d see as a positive and prior form reads okay for a race like this.
Race 5. (18:00) Ladbrokes Bet Ticker (bm64) 1300m
6 Bill The Boxer (Bet Now: $6.00) is 2/2 to start his career and I think he can make it 3/3. Impressive in both career outings, winning on debut at Dunkeld before doing all the work out wide on speed at Morphettville last time but he was just much too good and loved the way he knuckled down late. Confident he measures up.
Fitter and back a fair bit in overall depth are two big ticks for 3 Yulong Code (Bet Now: $4.80). Peter Moody trains this galloper, who resumed down the straight at Flemington and I thought he closed off alright despite never really threatening behind straight track specialist Pioneer River. If he gets luck from the gate, he’ll be in the finish.
2 Fudging (Bet Now: $21.00) will put himself on speed and give his all. That was the case just under three weeks back at the Valley when attempting to lead throughout and he tried hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when close up behind Show Some Decorum. Last bit will test, but he’ll give a sight.
Race 6. (18:30) Ladbrokes Same Race Multi-bm64 1600m
7 Moktaffy (Bet Now: $3.60) is getting better with racing and experience. Former Irish galloper that has had a couple of runs for Chris Waller, resuming with a fifth over 1400m before stepping up to 1500m when ridden positively by Prebble and the horse took advantage with a strong on speed win in what is turning out to be a good form reference. Upside to come and in a leading camp.
Fitter and up to the mile are two big ticks for 3 Basarwa (Bet Now: $2.20). He was kept quite safe in betting when resuming over 1400m at Flemington. He just wanted to get a bit keen in the run and I think that took something away from his finale behind Gentleman Roy. Like him up in trip and has enormous upside from the resumption you would assume.
8 Storm’s Colours (Bet Now: $10.00) is racing in good form for Anthony Chibnall. Got it soft in front at Geelong last start and gave a solid kick under Froggy but couldn’t quite see it through when third to Swiss Hero. Think he’ll get a cheap lead again and give some cheek.
Race 7. (19:00) Ladbrokes Blended Bets (bm64) 1400m
10 Yonce (Bet Now: $5.00) could be well above average. Not sure she beat much on debut at Mornington but she showed a fair amount of class and arrogance in the way she put them away. She was quite soft on the line, so 1400m here looks ideal and she finds a very winnable metro race.
If you were on 4 Wegobam (Bet Now: $4.80) at Flemington last time, like I was, apologies for bringing it up again. She should have won but just had no clear air until it was far too late when second to Rose Quartz. Looks to have come back in good order and has got upside to come, so she appeals.
3 Dance Date (Bet Now: $19.00) can mix her form but her best is good enough to be competitive here. She has won a couple of races at Geelong in impressive fashion, with in between wins a last placed effort at Warrnambool behind Unanimous. Tricky draw, but should press forward and is in okay after the claim.
Race 8. (19:30) Ladbrokes Fast Withdrawals-c1 1000m
Tricky race to close out the meeting but leaning towards 7 Translation (Bet Now: $4.40) for James Cummings. She hasn’t been far away of late, her latest run being over 955m at the Valley when back off the speed and somewhat run off her legs but was good late behind Titans. Like her up in trip on the bigger track and should be strong late.
4 Sniper Legend (Bet Now: $8.00) is on the seven day back up for Team Sadler after racing last Wednesday at Mornington. It was an ugly watch from the start if you were on. Mick Dee tried his hardest to get off the fence but with that, the horse got keen and once he was shoved back on the fence, it was race over. He’s becoming costly, but his best can take this out clearly.
12 Joseylin (Bet Now: $8.00) is starting to put it together for Team Hayes. Good in defeat two back at Bendigo behind subsequent metro winner Viviane. Then went to Yarra Valley where she was smashed in betting and her supporters were rewarded with a comfortable victory. Confident she measures up.
