Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:27) The Mission @ Aquis Farm Handicap 1630m
4 Tatcee (Bet Now: $4.60) on top for me. Chris Waller trains this filly, who has had three career outings, winning on debut at Beaudesert before a couple of solid runs in town. The latest of those came a fortnight back at this track/distance when sitting back in a very slowly run affair and he tried hard but couldn’t come on well enough to win, but she did a good job under the circumstances. Confident she runs well provided there is tempo.
3 Red Stina (Bet Now: $1.95) is a Red Dazzler filly for Rex Lipp who was enormous in the Miss Quaintly race given the tempo was an absolute crawl and she was near last in the run. Did a huge job to run third to the Vandyke filly. She’s got the awful racing pattern but no denying she has talent and will be a key threat.
1 Pumps (Bet Now: $2.70) ran second in the Miss Quaintly race here a fortnight back and his run was full of merit. He attempted to lead most of the way, gave a decent kick but just no match late for the finale of the filly, who is being aimed at the Oaks in the Spring. He’ll roll forward again and prove hard to run down.
Race 2. (12:02) Diversity Dash Handicap (70) 1110m
11 Linlithglow (Bet Now: $3.40) looks the one to beat. Toby Edmonds train this mare, who trialled well prior to resuming over 900m on her home track at the Gold Coast where her class came to the fore and she proved too good despite probably being out of petrol tickets late. Think she’ll come right on from that and rates highly.
14 Divine Messenger (Bet Now: $4.80) is a daughter of Star Witness for Tony Gollan who can mix her form but at her best she’s certainly capable of beating these. She ran over 1200m here a fortnight back and worked home well but was no match for the brilliance of a Stakes class mare in Winter Bride. That reads quite well for this.
3 Bogey Man (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Ben Currie trained gelding who is in career best form at the moment. Backed off the map late when racing over 1050m on his home track at Toowoomba a fortnight back and under Leah Kilner, he absolutely romped in and justified the plonk. Has to do it in town now but I think he can.
Race 3. (12:37) UBET Handicap (75) 2200m
7 Glen Ord (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Diane Murphy trained gelding who is racing in good form at the moment but can’t crack it for a win at the moment. Poor ride saw him get beat two back here behind Benico’s Prince prior to racing during the Grafton Carnival where he was rather one paced but kept batting away when third to Brilliant Jet, who of course won last Saturday, which reads so well for this.
3 I Feel Good (Bet Now: $7.50) has been a pretty campaigner for the Symons/Laxon team for a number of seasons now. Surged hard to win the Provincial Final at Ipswich two back. He then raced at this track/distance last Saturday and worked home late when a close up fifth to Brilliant Jet. Fitter and the claim for Steph Lacy helps.
8 Explosive One (Bet Now: $10.00) isn’t far away from a win and I think she gets a chance here in what is quite a thin race. Matty Dunn trains this mare, who ran at this track/distance a fortnight back and worked home well late without threatening when fourth to San Telmo. She’s working up towards a win. I think she gets her chance.
Race 4. (13:12) Tim Bell Memorial Handicap 1110m
If 1 Cannyescent (Bet Now: $6.50) is anywhere near right, I think he’ll be too classy for this lot. Formerly with the Hayes/Dabernig team but is now with Desleigh Forster and is making his Queensland debut. The form around him when racing in Victoria…Santa Ana Lane, Super Cash, Secret Agenda…just reads far superior to these. Bomb when produced fresh. Hopefully he’s ready to go.
10 Time To Torque (Bet Now: $7.00) another interesting runner. Gary Doughty trains this bloke, who is first up. He had a pretty long Spring/Summer prep, where he won second up and placed on several other occasions. No trials, but three of his career wins have come first up and he is likely to sit just off a hot speed.
Back to 1110m should suit the Rex Lipp trained 2 In His Stride (Bet Now: $13.00). He is first up here, having not raced since contesting the Moreton Cup where the trip was probably a bridge too far and he was outclassed behind The Monstar. Back to the 1110m looks ideal, they’ll go hard in front and he will be strong late.
Race 5. () Eureka Stud Handicap 1630m
Happy to have something on 3 Lordag (Bet Now: $7.50). He started $51 in the Tatts Mile a fortnight back but despite those long odds, I thought he ran a beauty in defeat behind Fir For Purpose. Gets a really good weight pull on No Annamossity and should sit much closer in the run. Hopefully get an each way price.
2 No Annamossity (Bet Now: $2.30) is a son of Mossman for Rob Heathcoate who looks to be going really well at the moment. Looked a good thing on paper two back over the 1350m here and rightfully bolted in. He then contested the Tatts Mile and worked home well to run second to Fit For Purpose. Now he’s had the mile run under the belt, he’ll be better off.
8 Lord Coconuts (Bet Now: $13.00) is a must for exotics I think. He ran over this track/distance two weeks ago in a solid 75 race and as per, he got a long way back after a tardy beginning but finished off well late in the piece to run fourth to Pressway. Long time since he has won, so I couldn’t back him to win, but he goes in everything.
Race 6. (14:22) LUCRF Super Plate (Class 3) 1630m
I think only bad luck sees 10 Italia Bella (Bet Now: $2.20) get rolled here. She’s shown glimpses of blacktype ability in the past but a combo of poor runs/rides along with strange placement have hampered her career. Loved the way she put them away over the 1350m here a fortnight back. Beat the older horses and did it quite dominantly, beating Looks Like Elvis, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Keen.
4 Scallopini (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the main threat. Was on him when he raced here a fortnight back and if you were on, it was just ugly, ugly viewing. Badly bailed away inside runners and then when trying to get clear, he got held up and severely checked. He’s got the talent to beat these, as we have seen when winning two back. Just needs clear air to build up the revs.
3 Sacred Rebel (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of Sepoy for Chris Waller who was scratched last Saturday to be kept on ice for this. Had his first run for the stable three weeks back over 1400m at the Sunny Coast where he toughed it out strongly on speed to grab a win at surprisingly good odds. Just has to tick the 1600m box now.
Race 7. (15:02) TBQA QLD Breeders Handicap (0MW) 1200m
15 Capital Connection (Bet Now: $4.00) on top for me. This son of Denman looks rather promising for Tony Gollan. Started Winx odds when resuming over 1100m at Ipswich and though pushed out, overall it was a pretty comfortable viewing if you took the shorts. Confident he can stretch that brilliance to 1200m and prove hard to beat.
7 On The Spot (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Toby Edmonds trained galloper who has been quite good this time in. Had been bursting to win a race and it finally came on the board at the Gold Coast midweeks last time under a 12/10 steer from Jimmy Orman, who remains on for this assignment and once again looks to map super.
4 Beat Street (Bet Now: $15.00) looks to have the right form on the board to trouble these. He comes through an open handicap at the Sunny Coast a tick under two weeks ago where he was far from disgraced when running third to Tycoon Ace. He has a good record at Doomben and he drops a little bit in depth for mine.
Race 8. (15:42) Global Gallop Handicap (0MW) 1200m
I think a safe option is 4 Prue’s Angel (Bet Now: $3.30) for Tony Gollan. This daughter of Sequalo was backed off the map when resuming at the Ipswich midweeks and though the margin was narrow, she got the job done well enough and to my eye looked to have improvement condition wise. She’s most effective at 1100m, so I like her to run well despite the 1200m being a niggle.
14 Sornja (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Steve O’Dea trained mare who trialled well prior to resuming at this track/distance a fortnight back where she charged home from off the pace but had to settle for second to the hard fit/in form stablemate Tabbing. The query is she wants further, as we saw last prep, but hard to ignore the resumption.
8 Felino Bel (Bet Now: $8.50) is a daughter of Bel Esprit who is racing quite well at the moment for the Guy team. This girl is just under three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at the Gold Coast where she was a few weeks between runs and probably just lacked that race fitness when a closing fourth to On The Spot. Quite a consistent type and I think she runs well.
Race 9. (16:22) QRIC Plate (Class 6) 1350m
If he holds his form, 6 Natch (Bet Now: $2.50) will prove too good once again. Tony Gollan has this horse absolutely low flying at the moment, winning his past three starts in pretty dominant fashion, including a fortnight back at this track/distance when running sizzling time and doing it comfortably. Hard to see him getting beat unless he’s trained off.
14 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $2.90) looks the key and perhaps only threat to Natch now after scratchings. Dominant win two back over the Sunny Coast 1400m before racing again at the track/distance and producing a howler behind Sacred Rebel, but did do work in the run. Firm ground is the niggle, but he’s got the class to bounce back.
11 Taillevent (Bet Now: $17.00) had good market support at odds when contesting a Class 6 during the Grafton Carnival and while he didn’t win, he battled away pretty well in defeat behind the impressive winner King Lear. Been a long time since he has greeted the judge but he does look to get a good set up here speed wise to potentially bounce back into the winners list.
