Outside Magic Millions Day, the best race meeting the Gold Coast has to offer is Hollindale Stakes Day and the 2019 edition rolls around this Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) Attwood Marshall Handicap (75) 1800m
3 The Candy Man (Bet Now: $2.35) is just a beauty and is so reliable. Class got him home first up over 1350m at Doomben before racing over the mile there where he looked in a bit of trouble on the turn but eventually got clear air and he surged hard late to score another impressive win, his fourth on the bounce. Up to 1800m looks ideal and clearly one of the hardest to beat.
4 Tunero (Bet Now: $3.90) is a son of Teofilo for Chris Waller who had trialled up well prior to resuming at Eagle Farm where he tried hard but found stablemate Le Juge too good, who of course franked the form last Saturday. That does read quite well for this. Up to 1800m is suitable despite probably wanting 2000m+ and potentially second up syndrome but hard to ignore the resumption.
Want to give 1 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $10.00) another chance. On the seven day back up after racing over this trip last Saturday at Eagle Farm where on face value, he was poor, but when they’re running 33.5 L600m, he had no chance. The two runs prior were very good and I was really keen on him last Saturday. Had excuses, so have to give him another chance here.
Race 2. (12:00) Gold Coast Cup 2400m
1 The Lord Mayor (Bet Now: $2.40) has returned quite well for the Chris Waller stable. Lovely ride from Brad Stewart got him home in the Toowoomba Cup last time, sitting just off the speed before angling out and finishing best in a driving go. Yet to tick the 2400m box, but the way he’s racing at the moment, the trip should be fine, has upside/fresh legs and is a key chance.
2 Xebec (Bet Now: $8.00) could improve here. On face value, he was disappointing last time out on the bog at Doomben but for mine, I think he was ridden a touch too close to the speed and he wasn’t happy on that surface. Also gets really good weight relief this time around, back on the home track and draws soft. A win wouldn’t surprise, but couldn’t back him to win.
9 Fighting Teo (Bet Now: $13.00) is on the quick back up for the Kevin Kemp team after racing at Eagle Farm last Saturday where he just did too much work in the run and faded late behind Sir Barnabus. Does meet that horse worse off at the weights, but senior jock on, better gate and does like racing at the Gold Coast, so an improved showing wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 3. (12:35) Ken Russell Memorial Classic 1200m
With this track a genuine heavy, and with race fitness on the side, I’m going with 3 Stronger (Bet Now: $5.50). Team Snowden trains this youngster, who hasn’t raced since the Kindergarten during the Championships where he was really good in defeat behind a good one in Bivouac after getting back in the run. Being by Not A Single Doubt, he should swim, and that’s what he gets this time around, plus draws right part of the track and Shinn steers.
1 Accession (Bet Now: $1.80) is too good for these isn’t he? Chris Waller trains this two year old, who pulled the pin on a Slipper prep after a disappointing fourth in the Skyline. Been given a break with Queensland in mind and I liked the way he looked in a recent trial win at Canterbury, leading all the way and clicked up with an instant response. Looks hard to beat here.
11 Royalist (Bet Now: $20.00) is a definite improver here at odds. Rochelle Smith trains this juvenile, who resumed on her home track at Toowoomba where she just got a mile out of her ground and was never in the hunt but did make ground late for fifth. Better suited on a bigger track and up in trip, and is a winner at this track/distance. She’s one to include in multiples.
Race 4. (13:10) Gold Coast Bracelet 1800m
15 Pinup Miss (Bet Now: $5.50) for me in a really tricky race. The WaterBott stable trains this filly, who broke the maiden tag at Hawkesbury time last time where she did look a moral and was ridden that way from Shinn, who didn’t really get stuck into the daughter of Al Maher at all. 1800m looks perfect, she can roll forward from the gate and this race isn’t overly strong.
8 Word For Word (Bet Now: $3.50) does look the filly to beat from the Princess Stakes as a form reference. She got a fair way back in the run before slicing her way through the field and surged hard to just miss out on picking up Baccarat Baby. Despite the gate, I think she’s the filly from that race re this race. Needs to improve, but in the right stable to indeed do that.
6 Rocknavar (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Matty Dunn filly who returns home after a mixed prep in Sydney. Can make a case she should have gone close in the Adrian Knox before going to the Oaks where she was outclassed. Returns home and back in trip, which I like. I guess the query is what is left in the tank with her because she is doing this all in her first prep. Have to respect the stable though.
Race 5. (13:50) Bat Out Of Hell 900m
Really good race this and am just leaning the way of 6 Whypeeo (Bet Now: $3.80) for Toby Edmonds. This bloke had a two run Spring prep in Melbourne where he was expected to run well but for mine just didn’t measure up or even come up, so pen those two runs. Was very good as a three year old and as a sprinter, so 900m fresh I like and his latest trial at the Gold Coast was good in sharp time.
3 Spurcraft (Bet Now: $2.40) does look hard to beat for Charlotte White but from a punting perspective, I can’t touch him at the price he is at the moment. His Summer prep was a beauty though, winning two of three, including wins over Tumbler and Mr Marbellouz. No public trials, but would assume he’s had a jumpout or two at Toowoomba. Inside gate is potentially a nightmare given the wet track and the fact this horse can be tardy away. He’s got the speed, but things just need to fall into place.
1 Tarzan (Bet Now: $9.00) is a ripping campaigner for the Stuart Kendrick stable resuming. Hasn’t raced since December 29 in the Falvelon here when on speed and tiring late behind the then in form Fiery Heights. He is a really good fresh horse and liked the way he went about his business in a barrier trial at the Sunny Coast when leading all the way under minimal pressure. He’ll be near the front giving his all I’m sure.
Race 6. (14:30) ATC Trophy 1400m
Going to stick with the Michael Moroney trained 10 Tribal Wisdom (Bet Now: $7.50). Thought he was good in an unsuitable race first up in the Galaxy before going to the 1200m at Randwick when wide throughout and just didn’t come on, but worth noting he still paraded quite big in condition, so there’s a stack of upside left and I reckon getting up to 1400m will be a big tick.
Firmer footing will really suit the Chris Waller trained 2 Cellarman (Bet Now: $14.00). Very good effort fresh in the Weetwood behind Sexy Eyes before struggling to pick his feet up on the Doomben bog in the Ascot Handicap won by Mr Marbellouz. The key to him is a dry track, which he likely gets this time around, and third up, he should just about be ready fitness wise.
9 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $20.00) is one who could jump out of the box at silly odds for local trainer Scott Morrissey. Thought his first up run over 1000m at Eagle Farm from the back in an on pace dominated race behind From Within was a beauty. He can sit much closer in the run from the good draw, loves his home track and if this track gets genuine soft, he’s right in the mix.
Race 7. (15:10) Gold Coast Guineas 1200m
I reckon we’ll get a good idea if 4 Zoustyle (Bet Now: $1.40) is a contender or pretender after this race. He’s the boom horse of racing up in this part of the world resuming with eyes towards bigger and better races. Has created such an impression in a short space of time with his brilliant racing style of sustained speed, then sprinting after that. Will have to work for the win, but he can and still win.
It’ll be interesting to see if Tim Clark on 1 Boomsara (Bet Now: $4.20) wants to make this a proper race given he’s on the horse most likely will be stronger at the end of 1200m on a heavy track. Magic Millions Guineas winner is first up with bigger fish to fry, but is a proven big time performer at the Gold Coast, has a bit of wet track form, and no doubts on him at a strong 1200m at this level on this kind of ground.
10 Churning (Bet Now: $11.00) does look a filly of some promise for the Toby Edmonds team. Not sure she was 100% happy around the tight track first up at Ipswich but class got her home and in the end, it was soft and dominant. On her home track, won’t mind rain if it comes, draws well and stable finds McEvoy to steer. Not sure she wins, but one for multiples.
Race 8. (15:50) Hollindale Stakes 1800m
Possibly one run short, but class will carry 10 Youngstar (Bet Now: $5.00) a long way here. On face value, it was just a run in the All Aged behind Pierata, but bear in mind she was first up off a Melbourne Cup and her late splits actually weren’t too bad, with condition just giving out late. Up to 1800m, down in depth and with class, she’ll take some beating here against this lot.
1 Mister Sea Wolf (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Chris Waller trained galloper who was well tried when resuming in the Doncaster Prelude off the back of some impressive jumpouts and under a confident steer from J Mac, class got him in the end to record a pretty good fresh win. Think he’ll take good improvement from that and his recent trial looked very good to the eye. He’ll take beating here.
6 My Nordic Hero (Bet Now: $26.00) should be suited up in trip. Have to forgive him for his run in the JRA Plate last time given he was back off the slow speed and he just doesn’t have the speed in the legs to dash that quick. Back in trip is a little niggle with this Waller galloper but gives the impression he’ll be fine, he’s got plenty of room for improvement and is not without a winning chance.
Race 9. (16:30) Silk Stocking 1200m
Very wary of 9 Platinum Angel (Bet Now: $9.00), a former Darren Weir mare having her first run for Toby Edmonds. This girl hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Mares race at the Gold Coast when back and making ground behind Invincibella. Not really noted as a first up horse but gee I loved the way she went through her gears in her Gold Coast trial win a few weeks back. Expecting a big prep from her.
6 Demerara (Bet Now: $7.50) is a very good mare for the James Cummings team who is resuming. This mare is looking to seal her career post racing with a Stakes win and she gets a great chance here given she’s an absolute bomb when produced fresh, has trialled well leading in and stable loves to target this race, and they rarely get it wrong with the mare they choose. Leading chance.
4 Indecision (Bet Now: $8.00) is a massive watch here. Tony Pike trains this mare and she comes over from NZ with just about A1 form for NZ racing. Five of her six wins have come on wet ground, she is a first up winner and she went like an absolute jet in a recent Te Awamatu trial. Her racing pattern is lead, and at times lead at all costs, which is a query here, but she’s got class/quality.
