An eight race program has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:25) Changing Lives Plate 1000m
Think 3 War Saint (Bet Now: $4.40) is above average and he’ll do me here in the 2YO. Trialled up brilliantly prior to debuting here on Good Friday where he was well backed and he didn’t let his supporters down with a commanding all the way win. Didn’t appear 100% happy on the wet track but he was much too classy. Better suited on firmer footing here I feel and despite still looking a bit green and new, he’s very good.
1 High Range (Bet Now: $3.60) is on the quick back up for the Vernon Brockman stable after winning impressively over 1100m here on Anzac Day where he led at a decent clip before booting clear early in the straight. Got the staggers late but had enough in hand. Like him back to 1000m, he has the speed to get across and lead and with hard race fitness, he’ll be hard to beat.
7 We’ve Got Dreams (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Universal Ruler filly on debut for the astute Michael Lane team. This girl was down to debut on Good Friday but instead trialled at Lark Hill last week and looked very good to my eye when running a close up second in handy time under little riding from Parnham. Stable should always be respected when they debut one in town.
Race 2. (15:05) Rotary Club Of Perth Handicap 1200m
It’s hard seeing anything other than a win for the Simon Miller trained 1 Dance Music (Bet Now: $1.55). This Stakes winning filly resumed a couple of weeks back over 1100m where she sat outside the well supported Catherine Wheels on speed before quickly putting that horse away and class getting her home in the end with the big weight. Has to carry the weight again, but you’d like to think there is improvement.
6 City Circle (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to be racing quite well at the moment for Neville Parnham. Tough on speed winner two back here over 1000m before racing at the same track/distance on Good Friday when just struggling on the bog track when third to Unibro. Better suited on firmer footing, hard fit…just not sure she beats Dance Music and 1200m a query as well.
7 Lookout (Bet Now: $10.00) is on the quick back up for the Neville Parnham team after racing over this track/distance on Anzac Day where he seemed to have every chance but bumped into a pretty good one I think when fourth to Flower Of War. Bumps into a stablemate of that horse here in Dance Music, a better horse IMO. Doubt he wins, but with the gate, should run first four.
Race 3. (15:45) Vinnies WA Handicap (76+) 1400m
4 Money Maher (Bet Now: $3.30) will do me first up. Talented four year old for the Pearce team who hasn’t raced since the SA Derby last year where he ran a brave seventh to Leicester after getting a mile back in the run, spotting a near impossible start. Blinkers on first time, been gelded, and has been trialling very well leading in. The set up looks to be a first up win before going to better races.
2 Majinika (Bet Now: $3.70) looks to be flying this time in for the Ashley Maley team. Good effort first up behind Dutch Spy before being given a soft lead last time out over 1500m under McNaught and she rode the gelding a treat, booting clear on the turn and giving nothing else a look in. Looks the leader again, will give a sight…just a little query on the more depth now he has to hold off.
3 Special Delivery (Bet Now: $7.00) should be forgiven for his last start run over 1500m here when down the track behind Majinika given he was wide no cover for the trip and rightfully faded out of the finish. Draws much better this time around, like him back to 1400m and Peter Hall jumps on. Hopefully his strong hands can get this horse into the right spot just off the speed and have last look.
Race 4. (16:25) Passages Perth Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Buttering up on 8 Free Trade (Bet Now: $2.70). Was keen on this Michael Lane trained galloper when he resumed here four weeks ago but just went a fraction too keen in front and that early burn just left him empty late when bloused by Speeding Comet. If he relaxes, he should be too good for them. Do I want to take a silly short price, eg odds on? I couldn’t touch him if he’s at those kind of odds.
7 Sophie’s Song (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Simon Miller trained filly who ran here on Anzac Day where I thought she was given every chance in the run by Azzopardi and once the filly got the split, it looked race over, but Forgotten Star was too good with momentum out wide. Takes on the older horses now, but has the speed to be near the front and be dangerous if she doesn’t do too much work.
6 Route Eighty Eight (Bet Now: $3.70) is racing really well at the moment for Justin Warwick but she can’t quite crack it for a win, finishing runner up in all three runs this time in, the latest coming here on Anzac Day when runner up behind an in form galloper in Dpn’t Fuss. Does tend to save her best for Ascot and fourth up now, there won’t be many excuses, if any, if she runs poor.
Race 5. (17:00) Passages Peel Handicap (1MW) 1600m
2 Rebel Knight (Bet Now: $1.90) looks a good thing for mine up to the mile. He contested the Raconteur last time out where he was back in the run off the slow speed and couldn’t dash initially but picked up and charged to the line to just miss out on picking up Cup Night. Looking for the mile now and this is a very thin race. Just has to take advantage of gate and he should be too good for mine.
5 Leading Man (Bet Now: $5.50) a definite threat for me. Adam Durrant trains this three year old, who ran over the 1500m here two weeks ago where he ran well but the leader/winner Velago was given a beaut steer from Lucy Warwick and gave nothing else a look in, including Leading Man, but he was game in defeat. Up to the mile should suit him, as should returning to firmer footing.
Up to the mile will suit 4 Zackariah Beau (Bet Now: $12.00). Ran over 1400m here on Good Friday where he got a fair way back in the run before presenting wider on the turn and producing a brilliant finale to get the job done narrowly but impressively. Racing as if the mile will suit this son of Blackfriars and the overall depth here isn’t strong, so I think he can measure up.
Race 6. (17:35) Ramelius Resources Trophy (70+) 1000m
Can see a stack of speed here and am hoping 1 Dam Ready (Bet Now: $19.00) can sit off it and have last look. This bloke hasn’t raced for three weeks since racing over 1200m when back, wide with cover, and failing to come on behind Special Reward, who was an impressive winner last Saturday. Like him back to 1000m and the depth here is nowhere near as strong IMO. Each way, he’ll do me.
I think back to 1000m will really suit 2 Market Ruler (Bet Now: $4.00). She has run over 1200m in both runs this time in, the latest behind Special Reward in that race mentioned above. For mine, she is a 1000-1100m on speed horse, and now she’s third up, hard fit, she does get conditions to suit and at her best, clearly capable of beating these. Giving her another chance.
7 Hoboken (Bet Now: $5.50) is a backmarker who will love a fast speed. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where he tried hard off a fast speed but had to chase from a fair way out and was left gassed late when third to Valour Road. Prefer him ridden cold and getting the drag up himself. If that can eventuate here, he’ll be stronger at the end and be a threat.
Race 7. (18:15) Neometals Handicap (64+) 1800m
3 Midnight Sky (Bet Now: $5.00) will do me here. This mare was three weeks between runs when racing over 1500m here a fortnight ago where she got back in the run and closed off alright despite never really being a winning threat when fourth to Majinika. Looks as if further will suit her so like her up to 1800m and she does find a really winnable race. Happy to be in her corner.
6 Yeah Bravo (Bet Now: $7.50) is struggling to put a win on the board but I think up in trip could suit this four year old. Ran over the mile here last Saturday where he was near the speed and battled away well in defeat when a close up fourth to Royal Strata. He does seem very one paced at the moment so I like him up to 1800m and does have a bit of class compared to these.
Interesting to see what 1 Dark Musket (Bet Now: $16.00) does. He comes back in trip after running over two miles in the WA Cup last time where I thought he was given every chance but couldn’t defend his title when third to Cappo D’Oro. Think he’ll find a few of these too sharp, but does have class on his side and will be strong late if the tempo is genuine, which it could be potentially.
Race 8. (18:55) End Homelessness Handicap (64+) 1400m
Taking a chance on the John Gangemi trained 4 Diamond Tonique (Bet Now: $18.00), who most of his racing on the dirt at Broome last time in and he really was a star up there, winning a few races, most notably last time out in the Broome Cup where he spanked them. That’s where he’ll likely head again this time in, but gee I thought he trialled well a couple of weeks back at Lark Hill.
2 Chesten Flyer (Bet Now: $13.00) is an interesting runner. Adam Fairey trains this gelding, who was just too bad to be true over 1200m here on Anzac Day, settling last in the run and failing to come on at all. Thought he trialled up well prior to that so have to give him another chance I think and at his best, he’s certainly capable of beating these. Definite winning chance.
7 Grey Enigma (Bet Now: $23.00) could be one to include in multiples. He sat wide with cover last time out at this track/distance and did try hard but struggled to make ground. He does seem a horse who can be good on the fresh side and despite getting on in years, he has shown glimpses of maintaining a zest for racing. Not sure he wins, but I’d chuck him in multiples.
