The Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival gets underway this Saturday with a bumper nine race card lined up. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
The Wave π: View the Field for The Wave
Race 1. (13:58) Aquis Handicap 1200m
4 Take Tea (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Les Kelly trained filly who has been pretty good this time in. Won her first two starts for the prep in sharp fashion prior to racing over 1200m at Eagle Farm when attempting to lead all the way and gave a good kick when asked by Jim Byrne, but couldn’t quite see it out when bloused late by Valario in a blanket finish. Perhaps with a more conservative steer, she’ll be hard to beat.
7 Say Haya (Bet Now: $18.00) can measure up here for sure. Thought she was really good two back behind a subsequent Stakes winner in Sugar Boom at the Sunny Coast before going back to country grade at Beaudesert for the kill and got it. Confidence is up and if Sugar Boom was here, she would be favourite, so the form reads okay for this.
Not sure she wins, but for multiples, I’d be including the Les Ross trained 10 Mishani Romance (Bet Now: $26.00). Ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast last time where she was nearer the inside and had her chance to win, but battled away well enough in defeat behind Kalik, a proven city performer. That was her first run in a few weeks, so she should have improvement.
Race 2. (14:33) Pierata Plate (Class 6) 1200m
If the run last Saturday hasn’t busted her, 7 Epic Girl (Bet Now: $1.65) should be taking care of this field. Gee she was enormous in the Nudgee last Saturday. Did all the work chasing a brutal speed set by Spirit’s Choice, and really was entitled to drop right away, but she was still there with 100m to go in a mighty effort. No harm from that and she wins this, but market will be the guide.
10 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $4.60) is an interesting runner. Was waiting and waiting for him to race at Eagle Farm over 1400m after an excellent run over 1350m at Doomben behind the then flying Macewen, but instead has been freshened up and comes back to 1200m at the Gold Coast, but the tick over trial was pretty good and has run well at the Gold Coast previously.
It’s been a somewhat fall from grace for 1 Cadogan (Bet Now: $23.00). This time last year, he was one of the form horses in Queensland and ran a beauty in the Magic Millions Cup. He resumed at Eagle Farm three weeks ago and despite the race being on pace dominated, he found nothing behind Epic Girl. Back at home, fitter, back in depth, can improve.
Race 3. (15:08) Gold Pearl 1100m
In the corner of 8 Lopez (Bet Now: $8.50) for the McEvoy team. Stable was hoping she’d debut at Eagle Farm but couldn’t get a run, so they debuted at this track/distance and she looked like she was at Schoolies. Was all over the shop and wouldn’t go straight at all. Did a pretty good job to run third. Better for that outing and experience at the track, she can bounce back hard.
1 Bribery (Bet Now: $4.00) is is a Team McEvoy filly that comes here off the back of a debut win at Morphettville where it was a tradesman like performance. Sat on speed throughout before being clicked up by Vorster and toughed it out well late to cling on and win. Needs to improve off that to be beating this lot, but no reason to suggest she can’t do that.
6 Cosmic Gossip (Bet Now: $14.00) has been good in two career outings and a win isn’t far off. Whether it’s here remains to be seen. Has finished runner up in both career outings, the latest coming at Doomben in a field of five behind Thunder Mania. Has the hard race experience under the belt and I think back to 1100m will suit her.
Race 4. (15:48) Gold Nugget 1100m
3 The Drinks Cart (Bet Now: $9.00) has been a hype horse for a little while but now he has to stand up and be counted. Debuted with an electric win over 900m here before being freshened up and racing over 1000m at Eagle Farm where he was on speed but was one of the first beat. To his credit, he fought on okay behind Gotta Kiss. Now at home, fitter, it’s contender or pretender time.
4 Verbal Assault (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Matty Dunn trained youngster that should run well here. Don’t think he beat a great deal on debut on the home track at Murwillumbah, but he won it like it was a barrier trial, spanking them by a space, and ran okay time relative to other recent 1000m races at the track. Always have to respect the stable.
Of the first starters, the one that interests me is 8 Mishani Fraudster (Bet Now: $27.00) for Les Ross. This gelding has had just the one trial in readiness for start one, which came at Doomben. Tucked in behind the speed before getting the inside split and showing good change up speed to win the trial in solid time. Keen to see how he goes against these.
Race 5. (16:28) Magic Millions Country Cup 1200m
14 Ibini (Bet Now: $15.00) gets the nod for me. Brett Cavanough trains this galloper, who is first up, and his record suggests that he does his best racing with fresh legs, as we saw last prep when he bolted up fresh at Mudgee. No public trials, but I’m sure has had a jumpout or two at Scone to prepare for this and good lead that Bossy has been booked.
Good little test for 5 The Pines (Bet Now: $2.45) but all you can do is win and that is what she has done in three runs this time in, the latest coming over 1200m at the Sunny Coast where she showed a really good turn of foot over the concluding stages to get the job done. Now on her home track and a mare in form should always be respected.
Not sure he wins, but one for multiples is 7 Three Sheets (Bet Now: $46.00) for Jeremy Sylvester. He comes through an 1100m race at Randwick on Boxing Day behind He’s Super Lucky and while he was never a winning threat, he should have finished much closer I feel. No real clear air in the straight at all. Blinkers back on and a senior jock takes over. Good speed in front, he can finish off strongly.
Race 6. (17:08) We Are The Gold Coast Handicap 900m
Jump and run 1 Spurcraft (Bet Now: $2.40). Brilliant winner first up at Doomben before facing his big test over 1200m at Eagle Farm last time and he was the first horse beat, well and truly confirming that bigger tracks when racing at 1200m is a no go. 900m at the Gold Coast is a perfect set up. Just jump and let him run, running them into submission.
7 Boom Chicka Boom (Bet Now: $5.50) is a speed demon for Les Kelly that resumes at his favourite set up, the 900m at the Gold Coast. This gelding hasn’t raced since August 24 when bolting up at this track/distance, leading throughout. Whether he leads these up I’m not sure, but loved the way he has trialled leading in and is a leading chance.
4 Guard Of Honour (Bet Now: $6.00) interests me. Former Kris Lees runner that is now under the care of Kelly Schweida. His best days are probably behind him, but he’s lightly raced and perhaps a change of scenery and training methods could spark improvement. Sunny Coast trial win was sharp and he’ll get his chance to finish off hard.
Race 7. (17:50) The Wave 1800m
10 Etana (Bet Now: $5.50) clearly on top for me. She returns to Queensland and is back in form after being suspect early on in the prep. Last start saw her ran second at Flemington behind Ryan’s Fender, which at the time wasn’t entirely ticked off as a decent form reference, but three winners have come out of the race, including the victor. Suited at WFA and should take some beating.
Good little test for 15 Diamonds And Rust (Bet Now: $16.00) but she gets the 51kg weight and lands on speed. Lovely steer from Tim Clark saw her bolt up over 1900m at Canterbury last time under the lights. Admittedly didn’t beat much, but she had the race won on the turn and was in total control. With her racing pattern, she can measure up for sure.
14 Cellarmaid (Bet Now: $6.00) is the knockout chance. She ran third to Guntantes two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and just lacked the turn of foot when it counted, but I really liked her her last 50m when closing off. Off that, she should eat up 1800m and has more room for improvement this prep compared to some engaged here, including a couple of well fancied runners.
Race 8. (18:25) Rising Stars Plate (Class 4 Boys) 1300m
5 Magic Fox (Bet Now: $16.00) is flying for Kelly Schweida and big tick for me is that he gets to 1300m, out in trip this prep. First two runs back from a spell have been at 1200m and I’ve loved the way he has found the line each start, with last start being at Eagle Farm in a hot Class 3 won by Malahide. Third up, hard fit, out in trip, he’ll take some beating.
Looks a lovely race for the Team Corstens trained four year old 2 Morrissy (Bet Now: $3.30), who ran over 1400m at Flemington last time out when given a lovely ride just off the speed under Williams and he hit the front, looking home, but was bloused near the peg in a blanket finish. Has the 1400m run under the belt and should hold him in good stead.
Think 4 Phobetor (Bet Now: $9.50) deserves another chance. Was really keen on him running well two weeks ago at Eagle Farm but gee he let me down after getting the run of the race just off the speed. Was there to pounce at the top of the straight but found little when asked for an effort. Back on his home track, worth another look because he trialled well prior to dismiss him off one poor run.
Race 9. (19:05) Rising Stars Plate (Class 4 Girls) 1300m
Well and truly D-Day for 8 Snow Valley (Bet Now: $9.50), who has promised to be a blacktype horse since day one, and has run well at that level without winning. Hasn’t raced since the Just Now and did expect more from her behind Frangipani Moon, but the market flucs late didn’t want a bar of her. Freshened up, is a winner at the Gold Coast, soft gate and Bowman on. One more chance.
See no reason why 1 Malahide (Bet Now: $6.50) can’t win again. Thought it was a fabulous first up win at Eagle Farm two weeks ago. Looked in a tricky spot on the turn but Fradd produced an absolute peach, slicing his way through the field and the mare showed good change up speed when asked to win impressively. On her home track, up to 1300m, she’s the one to beat.
12 Simply Sacred (Bet Now: $26.00) is a very interesting runner. This mare has been freshened up, having not raced since November 30 over the mile at Doomben where she was somewhat unlucky, but at the same time, she had her chance to win when midfield in a race where the form has been ordinary. Fresh legs back to 1300m on the home track could spark improvement.
