Racing returns to the course proper at Morphettville this Saturday with an eight race program. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:22) Good Luck Adelaide Crows Handicap (70) 1600m
2 Glam Guru (Bet Now: $1.40) should put these away. Above average filly for the Macdonald/Gluyas team who wasn’t all that convincing when resuming with a maiden win over 1100m here but she was at her best over 1300m a fortnight back on the Parks track where she gave them an absolute donkey licking. The mile looks ideal and back on the main course, she should take some beating.
3 Liberatore (Bet Now: $4.20) is a progressive type for Robert Smerdon who was backed hard late last Wednesday at Cranbourne and he won despite being off the bit well before the turn. He kept finding under Mick Dee and grabbed victory late. Racing like a Derby horse it would seem, so the rise to 1600m here looks ideal.
4 Tropical Lightning (Bet Now: $17.00) had trialled up really well prior to resuming at Mindarie-Halidon where the late market support suggested he’d return a winner and that is exactly what happened with a lovely finale from the back to score. The trial prior behind the blacktype performer Phelps Glory was very good and I am respecting him big time here.
Race 2. (13:57) Alex & Bens 50th Handicap (70) 1050m
4 Rioli (Bet Now: $3.80) is a well bred gelding for the Smerdon camp who was confidently backed when debuting at Sale and despite doing a bit of work in the run, he was far too good for them and won impressively, with a bit in hand to the eye. Really good test here against some likely types but he should measure up.
2 Phelps Glory (Bet Now: $2.60) is a smart gelding that is first up for the Stokes team. This boy raced twice during the Winter, running third to I’ll Have A Bit in the National before a fourth to Tennessee Raider and was tipped out. Looked very sharp in a trial win here a tick over three weeks back and looks ready to go.
1 Tabbing (Bet Now: $7.00) is a nippy customer who found the 1100m a bit too far in a strong race when resuming three weeks back here behind Miss Belisa. 1050m and a severe drop in depth should hold this bloke in good stead and if he can lead and get a cheap sectional, he’ll take some holding out.
Race 3. (14:32) Nicki Egerton Memorial Handicap (75) 1200m
2 Rock Status (Bet Now: $4.40) is a David Jolly trained sprinter who looks well placed at this level. Just found them a bit nippy first up behind Gun Case on Balaklava Cup Day but stuck on well in defeat. Has an excellent record at the track and is a winner second up, plus the drop in grade is perfect.
1 Counter Spin (Bet Now: $4.80) is a beauty for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. He has been in work forever it would seem but he continues to race really well. Won like Black Caviar two back here before racing again at the track/trip three weeks ago where he got back and worked home well late behind Chamois Road, who ran well last week to frank the form. Ticks the boxes here, more than most.
The senior jock book might improve 4 Evil Dreams (Bet Now: $6.50) enough to be competitive here. Didn’t mind his chances last Saturday over 1000m on the Parks track but young Wong was just far too aggressive and the horse punctured badly. Should get a suck run behind them and provided he has overcome that gutbuster, he’s right in this.
Race 4. (15:12) Transformer Services Handicap (70) 1050m
11 With Hope (Bet Now: $7.00) is a mare in form for the Ken Sweeney yard and I’m happy to be with her. Put together a couple of nice wins before racing on the Parks track two weeks ago where she flashed home late after getting held up at a vital stage when second to Nodoubtaboutit. Form around her reads well, she’s hard fit, in form…ticks the boxes.
1 Barood (Bet Now: $5.50) has to be respected here. Sue Murphy trained five year old who did a super job to win last time out at Bendigo, doing all the work on speed and he just kept finding to hold them away for a narrow but super victory, and the form has been franked via I’m Telling Ya winning at Flemington on Wednesday. Rates highly.
2 Call Me Curtis (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Wanted first up for the Craig Curtis yard. He’s a pest…an absolute pest. He has threatened to win a stack of races throughout his career but he always finds bad luck, one better, or sometimes he just turns it up himself. If he put it all together, he wins comfortably, which is why he is here…but you’re a brave punter if you dive into him.
Race 5. (15:52) Tokyo City Cup 1800m
2 Balf’s Choice (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Ryan Balfour trained galloper who has been in work for awhile now but gee is racing so well. Pike gave him an absolute peach in the Balaklava Cup last time out, leading throughout and bolting in. Has to raise that to the 1800m here, but I’m confident he can.
6 Kourkam (Bet Now: $16.00) was a horse I didn’t mind at odds in the Balaklava Cup considering he was first up and his trial leading in was very good. I thought his effort in defeat was very good considering the tempo/bias was clearly against him and he was a mile back. Did a good job to get as close as he did. If he is close enough on the turn, he’s good enough to win.
8 Kirona (Bet Now: $71.00) is a mare in really good form at the moment for the Balfour team. Pike gave her a peach to win on Balaklava Cup Day. She wasn’t really going anywhere it seemed but Pike kept at her but once she got the split, she took it and savaged the line late to get the win. Clearly harder here, but I think she can be added to multiples.
Race 6. (16:35) Spring Carnival Handicap (75) 1200m
3 Model Dragon (Bet Now: $3.90) on top but with not much confidence. Stokes trained mare that is first up after a mixed Autumn. She did win two races but when she was tested in better grade, she didn’t measure up at all. Given a quiet trial behind the speedy Ogunde, who won last week, but she is a bomb when produced fresh and gets the claim for Caserta.
5 Nipperkin (Bet Now: $5.50) is a mare in really good form at the moment for the Barry Brook stable. She put together three on the bounce before a gutsy third to the above average Handsome Thief over the 1250m on the Parks track a fortnight back. Back to her own sex now, hard fit, in form…should take some beating.
1 Beautiful Flyer (Bet Now: $8.00) is a talented mare who has been mixed so far in two runs back from a break. Was dreadful first up as a well backed favourite behind Nipperkin before being a bit better three weeks back when making ground late in the piece behind Showpero. Should be close to peak fitness third up and is a knockout chance.
Race 7. (17:17) UBET WH Whylie Handicap 1100m
9 Desert Lashes (Bet Now: $3.70) is a very good mare that resumes for Shayne Cahill after formerly being based in the NT with Lisa Whittle. This girl is eight for eight and every time she has been asked to step up, she has delivered. Comes here with no trials, but she has class and some brilliance about her, plus her racing pattern is a big tick.
1 Crystal Dreamer (Bet Now: $5.50) does look beautifully placed here by the Ellerton/Zahra team to pick up some blacktype. This five year old resumed over 1100m at Caulfield and stuck to the task really well in defeat when third to the Group l performer Voodoo Lad. Near unbeatable second up and should get every chance here.
6 Cool Passion (Bet Now: $9.00) is a former WA mare that had her first run for the McEvoy yard in the feature sprint on Balaklava Cup Day and it was just a total forgive if you were on the well backed runner. Just had too much to do on a day where those near the pace were advantaged and she was near last in the run. Has a really good second up record and will be strong late here.
Race 8. (17:55) The Junction Handicap 1600m
13 I’m A Princess (Bet Now: $2.50) is a Tony McEvoy trained mare who should take some beating here. She was confidently backed when resuming on Balaklaca Cup Day over 1400m off one soft 1400m trial and the money landed. She never looked like getting beat and won with a bit of authority. Keen to see what she does here up to the mile.
2 Captain Duffy (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Phillip Stokes trained four year old who was awful first up behind Steel Frost but was much better next time out when running a game third to the same horse over 1400m. Stepping up to the mile looks ideal and being third up, he should be ready fitness wise.
7 One For Max (Bet Now: $35.00) worked home okay first up behind Counter Spin before racing on Balaklava Cup Day where the market said he had three legs and he ran accordingly behind I’m A Princess. Senior rider jumps on now, has a good record and he too will love the step up in trip.
