For the first time in a couple of years, the Hawkesbury standalone program returns this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:20) Clarendon Stakes 1400m
1 Green Shadows (Bet Now:Β $4.60 TOP ODDS) is a horse with good talent for the Ryan/Alexiou. Strong debut winner at Goulburn before going to Eagle Farm where he was backed with confidence and under Jimmy Orman, he sliced his way through to get clear air and dashed late to win well. He has the runs on the board, handles all conditions and should be strong at the end.
4 Owen County (Bet Now:Β $6.00 TOP ODDS) will have no issue with a wet track. Debuted on a testing Kembla surface over this trip. He got back in the run but was absolutely trucking under Hutchings. Just a matter of pushing the button and he finished best. More depth here, but I think he goes pretty good.
2 Master Showman (Bet Now:Β $8.50 TOP ODDS) has recent experience at the track and is a last start winner, sitting on speed and fighting on strongly to win over 1100m. The query has to be 1400m, but has the right racing pattern and stable are having a good run with their juveniles.
Race 2. (11:55) Tab Highway Hcp (c2) 1100m
13 Brief Statement (Bet Now:Β $9.50 TOP ODDS) is set up to run a beauty in what I think is a target race. Game second at Coonamble fresh before racing here last start where I think it was a prep run to get a look at the track but she ran very well in defeat behind an in form Flying Tyrol. Inside gate, right down in the weights, she appeals.
6 Hardware Lane (Bet Now:Β $3.70 TOP ODDS) is a handy sprinter for Mitch Beer that does seem to race best when getting his toe in. He found a firm deck fresh at Wagga and tired late. Then found a wet track at Goulburn and he looked home but was nabbed near the peg by Briars Kingdom. He’ll jump, run and give a bold sight.
12 Emerald Bay (Bet Now:Β $34.00 TOP ODDS) is certainly capable with any hint of her best. Last run came just under four weeks ago at Mudgee when back in the run and making up some ground without really threatening. Tick over trial was a good piece of work and she’s a filly who likes getting her toe in.
Race 3. (12:30) Midway (bm72) 1500m
Happy to speck 15 Obvious Step (Bet Now:Β $26.00 TOP ODDS) each way here. She ran last Wednesday over 1550m at Canterbury and she was trucking in the run like she was going to be in the finish but couldn’t get clear air when she wanted it and was unlucky behind Smirk. I think she has returned nicely and is worth a throw at the stumps at the odds.
17 Divine Breath (Bet Now:Β $4.20 TOP ODDS) is knocking on the door for Theresa Bateup. Far from disgraced fresh in a Provincial Qualifier. Then went to a Midway a fortnight back and was there to win but the bias kicked in and she couldn’t get past French Bonnet. Third up, hard fit, she’ll take beating.
14 Achira (Bet Now:Β $12.00 TOP ODDS) is on the quick back up for Team Curtis after racing at Canterbury last Wednesday. The track was very testing and she had a big weight. Not sure she handled the track itself too flash but stuck on okay to finish fourth. Down in the weights with Robbie Dolan to steer, she can bounce back.
Race 4. (13:05) Blakes Marine (bm78) 1800m
1 Kalapour (Bet Now:Β $2.40 TOP ODDS) looks a really good prospect for Kris Lees. Australian debut came here over 1500m and the positive sign is that he was kept quite safe in betting. That told me he was ready to go and with help from a positive Bowman steer, he made an absolute mess of them. Fitter, up to 1800m, good upside to come, he’s clearly the one to beat.
Bowman rode Kalapour but he is steering 5 Deepstrike (Bet Now:Β $4.50 TOP ODDS), so whether that is a lead, not entirely sure. Deepstrike has found his groove though, winning his past two, the latest over 2000m at Caulfield when a strong winner under a peach steer from Daniel Moor. Back to 1800m no issue and will be strong late.
4 Shibli (Bet Now:Β $14.00 TOP ODDS) should love the rise in trip. Chris Waller trained gelding that ran at the midweeks at Hawkesbury over 1500m and was good late from off the speed when third to impressive winner Kalapour. Whether he wants one more, but not sure, but last run was encouraging.
Race 5. (13:40) Living Turf (bm78) 1100m
17 Sacrimony (Bet Now:Β $3.70) looks a horse with talent for Chris Waller. Resumed last Wednesday at Hawkesbury in a strong race and didn’t quite get the rub of the green in the straight when a close up third to a talented mare, Norwegian Bliss. I think with clear air this time around, he’ll take beating.
8 Authentic Jewel (Bet Now:Β $3.70) has home track advantage, which should hold her in good stead. Has been given a good break, having not raced since the Gosford Guineas when second to Bacchanalia. Couple of sharp trials to get ready for her return and from a soft gate on the home track, she’s primed to run a big race.
11 Fox Fighter (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is a key threat. David Payne trained three year old that bumped into Mazu his past couple. Latest run was last Monday at Warwick Farm when a closing third to the very much in form Athelric. Back up in trip, bigger track, he’ll get his chance to launch late.
Race 6. (14:15) Hawkesbury Gold Rush 1100m
2 Malkovich (Bet Now:Β $2.15) is wound up to my eye. Bjorn Baker trained gelding that has been kept on ice since a down the track effort in the Galaxy where he struggled on the testing heavy track in a clear forgive. Searching trial win at Randwick last week to get ready and 1100m with sustained speed looks an ideal set up.
1 Eleven Eleven (Bet Now:Β $5.50) looks ready to rock and roll fresh with an eye towards Brisbane. He ended last prep on a high when taking out the Magic Millions Cup, continuing his love affair with Queensland. Loved the way he closed off in a trial last week over 1200m, so the grounding is there to run well fresh at 1100m, and he has class.
8 Our Bellagio Miss (Bet Now:Β $9.50) will be near the speed and fighting hard. She comes through the Athelric race from Warwick Farm when leading and showing decent fight but was no match late for the in form Godolphin youngster. Not sure she wins, but one for wider exotics.
Race 7. (14:50) Hawkesbury Guineas 1400m
6 Loch Eagle (Bet Now:Β $5.00) to bounce back. Put together a couple of sharp wins to start the prep before going to the South Pacific at Randwick where he was forced to make his run nearer the inside, which was the no go zone, and that beat him in the end IMO when second to Vilana. Fairer surface here, touch wood, and off prior form, he wins this.
1 Mr Mozart (Bet Now:Β $2.30) is a quality three year old for Team Hawkes that comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since the Doncaster Prelude at Newcastle when a strong on speed winner under Pike, finding plenty late to fend off Our Playboy, who bolted up next start at Randwick. Fresh legs and back to his own age, he’ll take beating.
8 Cotehele (Bet Now:Β $21.00) is a definite winning chance. He got a mile out of his ground in the South Pacific three weeks back at Randwick but loved the way he closed his race off behind Vilana. He has the engine under the hood and will be dangerous if he can settle closer in the run.
Race 8. (15:30) Hawkesbury Crown 1300m
10 Brookspire (Bet Now:Β $2.60) looks hard to beat but gee she’s short. Has been kept on ice for a Brisbane Winter Carnival you’d assume. Last run came at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions Day when a game fourth to Snapdancer. Just one trial to get ready, but J Mac booked fresh tells me there is intent.
12 Never Talk (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is dangerous if she’s within range. Ran in the Provincial Final where she seemed a bit run off her legs in a truly run 1400m but was solid late behind stablemate Kinloch. Whether this is a prep run for the Dark Jewel, not sure, but she has class and loves wet ground.
11 Fashchanel (Bet Now:Β $7.00) will be hard to beat if there is an on speed pattern, which this track can produce with wet ground. She ended last prep on a high with a couple of strong wins in town. Trials have been strong, she’ll jump on the bunny and run a beauty fresh.
Race 9. (16:10) Hawkesbury Gold Cup 1600m
8 Kirwan’s Lane (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is in for a good prep. John O’Shea trained gelding that resumed two weeks ago at Randwick and was a big tick with the track pattern against behind impressive winner Our Playboy. Fitter, up to the mile, with a good second up record, he appeals as one of the hardest to beat.
11 Art Cadeau (Bet Now:Β $4.60) should be suited up in trip for Terry Robinson. Definite pass mark fresh in the Star Kingdom before going to Randwick where he had no luck when a fast finishing second to Our Playboy. 1600m should be fine for him and he has relatively fresh legs given the Randwick run wasn’t overly hard.
6 Archedemus (Bet Now:Β $12.00) won this race last year. Is he going as well 12 months on? I am saying no, but I love horses that have target races and this looks a clear target race. Needed the run in the Star Kingdom before being part of a mad speed battle at Randwick and dropped out. Saves his best for the mile, he’ll land near the front and give a sight.
Race 10. (16:45) Voir Grand Classic (bm78) 1300m
3 Norwegian Bliss… (Bet Now:Β $2.60) just how good is she? Lot of quality about her first up win over 1100m here. Had to lump 60kg and she was asked to chase from the outset. Entitled to spit the dummy out but she found under pressure and was lifted by J Mac to score. Confident she measures up.
10 Vreneli (Bet Now:Β $8.50) has the right racing pattern to give this a shake. Tim Clark sent him straight to the front at Canterbury, he got control and that was the enc do the section in a dominant display. 1300m should be fine for him, he has the right pattern and handles all conditions.
14 Hasstobegood (Bet Now:Β $17.00) looks to be in for a good prep. This mare didn’t disgrace herself fresh in the Birthday Card at Rosehill. She then went to the midweeks at Canterbury and was solid against the race shape behind Vreneli. Racing like she wants further and up to 1300m, she appeals.
