The Sydney Spring Carnival rolls on this Saturday with a ten race program at Rosehill, highlighted by the $7.5 Million Golden Eagle (1500m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
The Golden Eagle 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Golden Eagle
Race 1. (12:40) The Agency Real Estate Handicap (78) 1200m
I’m pretty keen here on 2 Katalin (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS), who resumes for James Cummings. This mare is first up after a two run Winter prep, highlighted by a dominant first up win on the Kenso track. Key to her is dry ground and fresh legs, a set up she should get here despite rain forecast, but nothing too alarming. Trials have been sharp, she’ll do me here.
3 Selburose (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a progressive mare for Chris Waller that comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since September 4 when an all the way winner at Randwick, beating Shaik, who has raced well at Stakes level since, so the form reads well, and thought the recent tick over trial was a good piece of work. Hard to beat from on speed.
1 Georgie’s Pride (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a quality mare for Desleigh Forster who you’d assume is a travel companion for Golden Eagle contender Apache Chase. This mare attempted to lead throughout over 1200m at Eagle Farm two weeks back. Gave a solid kick but just felt the pinch late when third to Royal Hale. Has the right racing pattern and third up, should be hard fit, on speed and giving her all.
Race 2. (13:20) Fujitsu General Handicap (78) 1900m
2 Mightybeel (Bet Now: $1.95 TOP ODDS) is racing in a real purple patch for Chris Waller. Strong win two back here before racing last Wednesday on the Kenso track where he looked in a bit of trouble but Schofield was able to cut back to the inside and the gelding finished best. Heading in the right direction and is hard to beat here.
5 Solar Apex (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) has done little wrong this time in and is hard to beat. Chris Waller trained gelding that put together a couple of sharp wins at Gosford to start the prep. He then went to Randwick three weeks ago and worked to the line strongly from off the speed when third to an in form stablemate Yiyi. Back to 1900m I like and overall, finds a winnable race here.
The seven day back up I always find a positive when it comes to Waller horses so I’m including 6 Lord Ardmore (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS). He ran last Saturday at Randwick and was never a threat in a leader dominated race, but his finale was good on the clock. Up in trip yes, soft gate to use yes, upside yes…I think he’ll run very well.
Race 3. (14:00) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
3 Casino Kid (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) will be suited once he gets to the 1400m/1600m range, but he looks to have his share of talent and is a proven Highway performer. He was specked at odds when resuming in a Randwick Highway a fortnight back and was good late behind Ten Bells. Whether he wants one more, not sure, but the resumption was very encouraging.
5 Private Agent (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) certainly has the engine under the hood to give this a shake. Disappointed punters badly two back at Moruya as a short priced elect. He then went to Wagga when ridden aggressively, leading throughout, and was strong late in getting the job done. He can measure up here for sure.
13 King’s Trust (Bet Now: $51.00 TOP ODDS) is another that is a proven Highway performer and can give this a shake. He resumed behind Ten Bells two weeks back at Randwick and was okay late without threatening. I reckon he might have eyes on the Highway at Newcastle on Hunter Day, but has to be respected here.
Race 4. (14:40) Four Pillars (68) 1500m
4 Different Strokes (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) is a good little race horse for Kim Waugh. He is still in his first prep but is seemingly holding his form and is getting better as the prep goes on. Impressive winner of the Midway at Randwick from three weeks ago and what I liked is the ticker he showed and class when Bowman got stuck in. Good test here, but he’s the safe option.
11 Daralina Belle (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a progressive mare for Matty Smith that was 3/3 to start her career prior to racing on her home track at Warwick Farm where she had a real battle with Rebel Rama, a proven stayer. Daralina Belle fought hard but was nabbed on the peg. She showed enough in her three wins prior to command respect here.
2 Dalaalaat (Bet Now: $31.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have come back really well for Nathan Doyle and is regarded as a leading contender here. Two runs back from a break have come in Midways. Resumed with a win at Kembla before stepping up to 1300m and just missing out on the win when a close up fourth. Third up, hard fit, hard to beat.
Race 5. (15:25) Rosehill Gold Cup 2000m
2 Think It Over (Bet Now: $2.30) is a beauty and has the runs on the board this prep. He’s becoming a really reliable horse. Just got the win in the Hill Stakes before giving them a belting two weeks ago in the Craven Plate and he really did charge clear at the end. Has to carry the weight, but class alone nearly gets him home.
6 Sky Lab (Bet Now: $7.00) is back on track. Jury was out after a plain run in the Epsom but he stepped out to 2000m in the Craven Plate and warmed to the task with real purpose late when second to Think It Over. This weight scale suits him better I feel and he’s got more upside to come.
5 Lion’s Roar… (Bet Now: $5.50) is he back on track? His opening two runs back were putrid, but the Epsom run had plenty of merit. He was then ridden aggressively in the Craven Plate and showed good fight when third to Think It Over. He’s back to somewhere near his best, which is good enough to win this.
Race 6. (16:10) Classique Legend Stakes 1300m
If he’s within rang 400m out, good luck beating 2 Masked Crusader (Bet Now: $3.50) I’d suggest. The race was set up for him in The Everest but he still had to take advantage of it and he did, surging hard late to just miss out on picking up Nature Strip. Extra 100m, good speed once again, in form, hard fit…bad luck the only thing beating him.
10 Big Parade… (Bet Now: $8.50) is he becoming bomb proof? Forced to take a sit two back but was still able to dash home with 61kg when winning at Randwick, before proving that was no fluke in the Sydney Stakes with a strong on speed win. Extra 100m should be no issue and is hard to beat.
5 Kementari (Bet Now: $41.00) has returned in super order for James Cummings. Surprised some with a first up win in the Gilgai before going to the Sydney Stakes where he really had no chance given the race shape but was good late when fourth to Big Parade. If he can sit closer in the run, he’ll be dangerous.
Race 7. (16:50) Golden Eagle 1500m
To me, this race is all about 13 Maximal (Bet Now: $13.00). If he brings his UK form, he wins. You look at his UK form. Hurricane Lane, Baaeed, Poetic Flare…it is world class form. From all reports, he has settled into Australian life nicely and those form lines is just far superior to anything engaged here. Just needs luck from the draw.
2 I’m Thunderstruck (Bet Now: $4.20), ability wise, is the best horse in the race. The query is whether he can be as dynamic with 57.5kg racing Sydney way. If the answer is yes, then I think he goes awfully close. It was a brilliant win in the Toorak, smashing the clock in the process. Exciting animal for a stable that rarely get it wrong when they travel to Sydney.
If there is a total blowout chance, I think 17 Media Award (Bet Now: $35.00) is the one who could surprise. Race shape was against her in The Invitation when first up but her late splits weren’t too bad. Fast run 1500m I see as a positive and she could sneak a first four spot at a big price.
Race 8. (17:25) Ned Whisky Handicap (78) 1100m
Good test here for 6 Delexo (Bet Now: $2.50) but gee this horse is flying, likewise the stable of Kristen Buchanan. He absolutely smashed the clock in winning last Wednesday on the Kenso track, leading through and running sub 56 for the 1000m, which is just low flying. If he can stretch that brilliance out to 1100m, which he looks like he can, he’ll take a power of beating.
4 On The Lead (Bet Now: $4.60) is finding it hard to win this prep but that said, he is racing well this time in. Three weeks between runs since racing at Randwick when wide throughout and battled on well, but was clearly no match for Leo. He wants a firm deck. If he gets that here, he’s hard to beat.
5 Dunbrody Power (Bet Now: $15.00) is a John Thompson trained mare that is several weeks between runs since a close up effort at Gosford behind Electric Girl. She was back in the run and never really a winning threat, but was okay late behind the Team Hawkes mare, who ran well in The Nivison. Not sure she wins, but a first four threat.
Race 9. (18:10) Schweppes Handicap (78) 1500m
7 Golly I’m Lucky (Bet Now: $4.60) is flying without luck for Terry Robinson. Little luck two back behind High Supremacy. He then went to Randwick a fortnight back and had zero luck in the straight, clearly should have finished closer behind Promise Of Success. Better luck and he can win.
5 Ma And Pa (Bet Now: $1.85) is a Chris Waller trained galloper that is racing in super form at the moment. Nothing flash about the way he is racing, but he showed some really good ticker to win at Warwick Farm last start when leading throughout and fought them off gamely. Harder here, but he’s very genuine.
3 Easy Campese (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Sidestep for John Sargent that resumes. This guy came of age last prep, highlighted by wins on the Kenso track and before that, a tough on speed win in the Albury Guineas. Has looked to trial up really well leading in, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 10. (18:45) TAB Handicap (78) 1300m
I think 4 Zoushack (Bet Now: $4.00) will be hard to beat in the last. I was originally against him due to drawing very wide with speed drawn inside, but nine scratchings has compressed this field right up. Dominant all the way win at Randwick last time and no reason why he can’t repeat the dose.
8 Cuban Royale (Bet Now: $8.50) is much better suited at Rosehill and he can bounce back. He ran two weeks ago at Randwick and didn’t quite get the rub of the green, and for mine should have finished closer behind Zoushack. If he gets better luck this time around, he can cause problems.
13 Visinari (Bet Now: $12.00) has got talent. Former UK galloper that made his Australian debut at Tamworth and I thought he was warming to the task nicely late behind Edit, who ran super in the Kosciuszko, so the form reads well, and I thought his trial win at Muswellbrook was a good piece of work. Just needs luck from the wide gate.
