Morphettville is where Adelaide metro racing will take place this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:46) Leigh & Brian Hoey Handicap (82) 2000m
2 Aagas (Bet Now: $2.70) has come back in super order for Ryan Balfour and confident he can win. Has finished runner up in both outings this prep, resuming with a second on the Parks track behind Polar Vortex before going to Gawler (Metro) where he went stride for stride with Dance Of Heroes in the straight and looked the winner but that horse kicked back and just proved too good. Third up, should be ready re fitness.
Back to 2000m will suit the John Hickmott trained veteran 3 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $4.00). He is two weeks between runs, having last raced over 2400m on the Parks track where he tried hard and loomed to win but I reckon the distance saw him out late when fourth to More Than Ever. Back to 2000m is a massive tick for him and I think he finds a winnable race.
1 Up ‘N’ Rolling (Bet Now: $4.00) has had a few runs for Grant Young and I don’t think a win is too far away. He comes through the More Than Ever race from two weeks ago over 2400m where he was a touch held up at times but picked up and grabbed third in a solid performance. He’ll win one eventually. Back to 2000m is a little query given he was strong at the end of 2400m last time but I’m including him in multiples.
Race 2. (13:21) Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (86) 1600m
Hard to knock the way 3 France’s Boy (Bet Now: $3.40) is going at the moment. Close up third behind Balcazar at this track/distance two back before stepping back to 1550m on the Parks track where he looked in a bit of trouble when Street Sheik challenged but to his credit, he found plenty late and was too good for his rivals. Has to be considered a serious threat once again.
I reckon the little freshen up should suit the Phillip Stokes trained 1 All Too Huiying (Bet Now: $2.40). This five year old put together a couple of decent wins on the bounce before failing over 2000m here, seeming to be a tired horse. Freshened up and liked the way he moved in a recent Murray Bridge trial. Certainly has enough quality in the bonnet to give this a shake despite the mile being short of his best trip.
4 Polar Vortex (Bet Now: $7.00) is on the seven day back up for Travis Doudle after racing over 1550m on the Parks track last Saturday where he had the dream sit behind the speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite get past Marina and had to settle for second. Think the Parks track is where he races best, but should get a decent enough run near the speed here and be hard to run down.
Race 3. (13:56) Gia & Sophia Gonis Handicap (75) 1200m
Could easily make a case for 1 Buried Treasure (Bet Now: $12.00), who resumes here. This gelding came of age last prep during the Spring/Summer, winning three of his last four, including a win over 1400m on the Parks track. He is a first up winner and I loved the way he trialled under no real pressure at Murray Bridge recently. 1400m is his trip, but expecting a bold first up performance.
2 Kemalpasa (Bet Now: $3.20) is a quality animal for the Jolly stable that comes here in winning form after winning first up at Gawler (Metro) three weeks ago. Visually and in the form guide, it looks impressive, but bear in mind there was two speed horses setting a strong tempo, he sat off it and got the dream run. Not sure he’ll get it that easy this time around but hard to beat all the same.
Danielle Wilson has 6 Pale Ale (Bet Now: $7.50) flying at the moment. He ran over 1250m on the Parks track two weeks ago where he was given a sweet steer by Eran Boyd and looked the winner on the turn. Fought hard but the turn of foot produced by an in form Swipe Me Right was too much and he had to settle for second. Working up to another win and he gets his chance.
Race 4. (14:36) Ian Ricardo Handicap (90) 1050m
I’m going to take a chance on 6 Thompson’s Reward (Bet Now: $5.50), who rises a fair bit in depth, but gets a significant weight drop and we know that he has a booming finish on him. Hasn’t been able to show it this prep given he lumped 57kg first up then 58kg last time out. Has run well, but just like the weight relief he gets, the tempo will be hot and he’ll be strong late.
1 Bellara (Bet Now: $3.60) is a really interesting runner. Former Darren Weir mare that is now with the Corstens team at Flemington. Has class on her side and recent Flemington jumouts have been solid enough. I thin you’ll know if she’s ready or not in the last 10-15 minutes of betting. Interesting.
3 Barood (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Sue Murphy trained sprinter who was close up behind Columbia two back before going to the Parks track a fortnight back where he tried hard from off the speed but was no match late for the finale produced by Bold Star. He’s working up to a win I suspect and he finds a really winnable race here. Definitely one of the leading contenders.
Race 5. (15:16) Skippy's Run Maiden Plate 1050m
6 Autumn Splendour (Bet Now: $2.90) looks hard to beat here. Phillip Stokes trains this filly, who had trialled up well prior to debuting at Gawler (Metro) where she had little luck at a bital part of the race and you could make a case that with clear air from the outset she wins instead of a third to Magic Phantom. Bigger track, run under the belt, looks the one beat IMO.
10 Lunar Light (Bet Now: $5.50) is a daughter of Akeed Mofeed on debut for Will Clarken. This filly has had two trials this prep in readiness for her return. Tailed off last in the first trial before being much better next time out when a close up second to the above average Rowsthorn and looked to move well. Overall, not the strongest maiden going around, and stable is having a really good run.
3 Marette (Bet Now: $23.00) is a John Hickmott trained gelding that was completely unwanted in betting when debuting last Wednesday at Murray Bridge and while he was never a winning threat, I didn’t mind the way he found the line late behind a city class horse, Pretty Brazen. That form reads well for this and you’d like to assume he’ll take natural improvement from the debut.
Race 6. (15:56) Brian Poole Handicap (64) 1050m
Going the way of 9 Rowsthorn (Bet Now: $3.00), who is first up for Tony McEvoy. This filly had one start in her opening prep, which came on the Parks track in early February when bolting up and being far too classy for her rivals. Don’t think she beat much but in isolation, she looked smart and that was the case in a recent Murray Bridge trial win. She’s ready to go I think.
3 Suplex City (Bet Now: $2.30) is a Will Clarken trained gelding who was a sharp first up winner before racing over 1200m at Morphettville and on face value, he was disappointing, but the run was outstanding considering he was back near last and had to come very wide on a day where it seemed the inside lanes were the better ground. Did a great job to get as close as he did. Freshened up and recent trial/jumpout was solid.
2 French Rock (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Statue Of Liberty gelding who resumes for the Francis/Kent stable. This bloke hasn’t raced since Feb 16 over 1200m here when a few lengths away from Just Kappy in a race which has produced three subsequent winners. He has a really good fresh record and has been tuned up for his return with three trials, so he’s ready to go.
Race 7. (16:36) Lachlan Harris Handicap (70) 1511m
8 Despacito (Bet Now: $2.35) looks really well placed here by Tony McEvoy. This mare has done her recent racing in Melbourne and despite not winning since first up, her runs have been full of merit. Been freshened up and trialled up really well at Murray Bride behind the well performed stablemate Vinland. Has the right form around her so happy to be in her corner.
1 Borris In Ossory (Bet Now: $10.00) is a beauty for Grant Young and confident he can run a good race here. He races best when leading/controlling so that put pay to his chances last start on the Parks track given he was wide most of the way and doing work. Did a super job to finish as close as he did when third to Going Gaga. If he can lead, he’ll take some running down.
9 Double Pockets (Bet Now: $17.00) is racing in near career best form at the moment for the Sue Nolan stable. Broke a long run of outs when winning at Gawler before racing there again at the metro meet a few weeks back where he attempted to lead all the way and he gave a reasonable kick but Charossa was just far too good for him. Beat the rest comfortably. Keen to see if he can translate this form to the metro track.
Race 8. (17:15) David Donald Handicap (64) 1200m
9 Secretly Discreet (Bet Now: $5.00) for me, just. Phillip Stokes trains this mare, who is six weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where on face value, she was disappointing behind Counter Drive but that horse got a really good mid race breather and turned it into a sprint to the line. Been freshened up and moved well in a recent Murray Bridge trial.
7 Russian Romeo (Bet Now: $3.00) was kept quite safe in betting when having his first run for Will Clarken at Murray Bridge and under a confident steer from Todd Pannell, the gelding found plenty late and was too good for his rivals in an impressive SA debut. You’d like to think he’ll improve off that and he does find a winnable race here if he at least holds his form.
4 Ready Sunshine (Bet Now: $17.00) looks to be going well for Ryan Balfour. This gelding ran over 1000m on the Parks track a fortnight back in a B86 where he was tailed off and run off his feet early but liked the way he found the line late behind Bold Star. Think that form reads well enough for this and back on the bigger track, I think he’ll take some holding out if they go silly in front.
