Nine races will be run and won at Rosehill this Saturday where it is Expressway Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:45) Your Local Greengrocer Handicap (78) 1100m
7 Charlayne (Bet Now: $3.50) does look the one to beat here. Very smart looking filly for the Chris Waller team who trialled up very nicely prior to debuting at Canterbury where she got off the pace and was held up for a touch but once she saw clear air, it was game over and she exploded. Very confident she can measure up here.
2 From Within (Bet Now: $5.00) is an Edward O’Rourke trained filly who has been pretty good this time in without winning. Looked all over a winner three weeks back at Randwick but had to settle for a narrow second to Pendeloque. Trialled up very nicely on Monday at Randwick to keep up her fitness levels. Just has to overcome the sticky gate.
4 Goldfinch (Bet Now: $9.50) was a bit unlucky in the Pendeloque race mentioned above. First time in her career they rode her with cover and it backfired as she got badly held up with plenty to offer it would seem. Think they should let her roll this time in, and with Blevic being the sire of the dam, she does have serious wet track pedigree.
Race 2. (13:25) Toyota Material Handling Canonbury Stakes 1100m
Gary Portelli has been talking up 4 Exceltic (Bet Now: $3.20) for some time and we finally get to see him debut. His two trials this prep have been outstanding, both times ridden by Tye Angland and each time he has savaged the line and won like a really good horse. Has to do it now on race day, but I’m confident he can measure up.
1 Performer (Bet Now: $1.80) is the Breeders Plate and probably the number one seed when it comes to the Slipper. Just want to take a set against him first up as a betting proposition. The win on debut was brilliant, he looks a really good colt. But I was really turned off by his trial last week. He won, but was hard ridden and the time was nothing flash. Of course he can win, but he can win without me.
5 Stratosphere (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Snitzel on debut for the Snowden camp. This bloke has had two trials this prep to get him ready for the debut. Won at Wyong before a solid fifth to Satin Slipper at Randwick on Monday. The stable are one of the best when it comes to juveniles, so I’ll be keeping close tabs on him.
Race 3. (14:00) Widden Stakes 1100m
2 Fiesta (Bet Now: $3.30) is first up for the Chris Waller team and she is probably the pick of the raced brigade. Debuted with an eye ctahing third in the Gimcrack before a game second in the Kirkham. Has looked outstanding in a couple of barrier trials here and appears ready to go for her first up assignment.
1 Secret Lady (Bet Now: $4.20) is the race fit filly with the experience and she should take some beating here. She did a huge job in the Magic Millions when doing work on speed and sticking on for fifth to Sunlight. 1200m is probably a stretch for her so back to 1100m is ideal and she does have a touch of class/quality on her side.
4 Misteed (Bet Now: $12.00) is a talented filly for the Snowden camp who debuted with a narrow second to Whiskey Shooter before racing at Canterbury again. She was going to burst through but then got chopped out and went to the line last 100m like she was in a barrier trial. With clear air, I’ll be keen to see what she does here.
Race 4. (14:35) Sydney Markets Foundation Handicap (90) 1500m
Confident that 2 Liapari (Bet Now: $11.00) can more than hold his own here. He has finished behind the low flying Dreamforce at his last two starts, settling for third each time. He has got back in both runs and has closed off okay but well beaten by arguably the form horse in Sydney right now. Those two tough mile outings should have him cherry ripe for this 1500m assignment.
7 Flow (Bet Now: $2.80) needed a decent confidence boost and he got it big time last start over the 1400m at Randwick when ridden on speed from Bowman and putting them away with a fair bit of ease. Admittedly he beat nothing but he put them away. Perhaps he can go on with it now his confidence is up and high.
1 Admiral Jello (Bet Now: $27.00) is a quality staying gelding that resumes for Kris Lees. He had a fabulous Spring prep despite not winning. He ran some mighty races in quality events, most notably the Newcastle Cup behind Broadside. He can pull out a decent run fresh and while 1500m is short of his best, he does have class/quality.
Race 5. (15:10) TAB Highway Plate (Class 3) 1500m
I think there might be a bit of value about 2 It’s A Lottery (Bet Now: $9.00) for the John Bateman yard. He resumed three weeks back over 1300m at Kembla Grange and I thought he worked home well late in the piece behind Moss Trip, who ran a beauty in town last Saturday, so that does read well for this, I like him up to 1500m, draws well and gets J Parr steering.
Many thought Kopi Luwak should have beaten 13 Acquittal (Bet Now: $1.65) but I think a bit of credit has to go to Acquittal. He was ridden upside down and pulled quite hard in the early stages of the race. Had every right to drop off but he showed a lovely turn of foot and proved too good. 1500m is a different pain barrier, but I think he’ll get it if he relaxes.
9 Fui San (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Terry Robinson trained galloper who was just fair in his two runs back from a break before racing over the mile in a Randwick Highway three weeks back where he sat on speed and stuck on nicely late behind Newtown Bluebag. Should get a lovely run from the gate and fourth up, has to be at peak fitness.
Race 6. (15:45) Freshmark Handicap (82) 1500m
9 Bye See (Bet Now: $3.40) looks the obvious option here. Mick Tubman trains this mare, who is going so well at the moment. Won impressively on Boxing Day before a gutsy second over the Randwick mile a fortnight back behind Maddison Avenue. She was only third up there so she should have room to improve, and this is a very thin race.
3 Sizzling Bullet (Bet Now: $10.00) is a well bred son of Snitzel for the Chris Waller team. He resumed over 1400m at Randwick three weeks ago and just looked in need of the run when finishing behind Voilier. Two of his three career wins have come second up and he should take plenty of improvement condition wise from the resumption.
4 Quick Defence (Bet Now: $12.00) was a drifter in betting when resuming over 1400m at Randwick a fortnight back but despite that, I thought he ran really well in defeat when third to Flow. Never going to win given the lack of tempo but he stuck to the task gamely. Has a really good record second up without winning and he can definitely win this.
Race 7. (16:25) Sydney Markets Limited Expressway Stakes 1200m
Going to give the star mare 2 Global Glamour (Bet Now: $3.00) another chance. I think you have to be forgiving of her failure in the Magic Millions Mares first up at the Gold Coast given she was wide no cover with the big weight and the tempo was absolutely brutal for the entire. Not the greatest of second up records, but WFA suits her perfectly, maps super and has class.
5 Trapeze Artist (Bet Now: $3.90) is a high class three year old for the Gerald Ryan team that is first up. Brilliant winner of the Golden Rose before going to the Coolmore where he got a mile back out of his ground. Trialled up here last week and it was one of the better trial efforts you’ll see, keeping in mind he did it without blinkers. He’ll go close.
3 Memes (Bet Now: $8.00) lacks the class to beat some of these, and I doubt she will win, but I think she will give a bold sight for your money. Loved her first up win at Randwick. She was there to be beaten 200m out but she found plenty and kicked really hard when required. WFA isn’t her go, but map wise, she does look suited to run well.
Race 8. (17:05) Foodbank Handicap (81) 2000m
I think the each way play clearly lies with 8 Magical Stance (Bet Now: $18.00). Ron Quinton trains this bloke, who has threatened to be a Saturday class horse but hasn’t quite gone on with it. Still, his effort over 1900m at Canterbury last time out was full of merit when a closing third to Queen Of Heights. 2000m on the big track, peak fitness, gets his chance.
7 High Opinion (Bet Now: $4.00) should be forgiven for his last start failure over 2000m at Randwick. Just got a mile back against the bias and really had no hope but he stuck to the task rather gamely I thought behind Carzoff. Provided we get an even level playing field here, I think he can bounce back hard in an open race.
5 More Energy (Bet Now: $15.00) comes through the Carzoff race at Randwick two weeks ago. He was wide no cover for the trip so that pretty much sealed his fate but in the end he wasn’t too bad I thought when beaten 4.5L. I’m convinced he is going well. Just needs luck in running I reckon to run a bold race at huge odds.
Race 9. (17:45) Fresh For Kids Handicap (83) 1300m
6 Pumpkin Pie (Bet Now: $13.00) look a great knockout chance. She resumed over 1200m at Randwick a fortnight back and I thought her effort was very good. She was back and out wide on a day where near the speed/rail was the spot to be. Just looked in need of the hit out but her finale and splits were solid. Expecting a sharp run second up.
8 Don’t Give A Damn (Bet Now: $3.20) is the clear x factor. Probably the number one seed for the Williams camp when it comes to the Country Championship and when you remind yourself of what he did in the Spring, easy to see why. In six weeks he went from a Goulburn maiden to a strong Highway Anniversary consolation and lit up Randwick. No trials, so hard to know where he is at fitness wise, but class wise, he’s right up to these.
4 Insensata (Bet Now: $7.00) was an eye catcher in the Faraway Town race at Randwick, the one that Pumpkin Pie resumed. Was held up a touch and dashed through late to grab third. Out of the two runs, I thought the run of Pumpkin Pie was better considering she was last and out in the inferior ground. They’re the knocks, but she’s loaded with talent.
