The Ascot Carnival continues this Saturday, highlighted by a couple of $150,00 Group lll events, the Asian Beau (1400m) and Prince Of Wales (1000m) The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:34) Seppelt Wines Plate 1100m
I think 2 Tinsnip (Bet Now: $2.10) can get the job done. Thought he was plain on debut at Belmont before racing over 1000m here where he was much better, closing off strongly to run second to Prim And Proper. Think the extra 100m will really suit this horse and he looks to have more upside. Happy to be with him.
1 Prim And Proper (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Lou Luciani trained filly who did a god job to win the race mentioned above. She wanted to lay in late under pressure but found when asked by Whiting to cling on. The extra 100m is the concern with her, especially if she was laying at the end of 1000m. But she’s got the runs on the board.
3 Kissedbyfriar (Bet Now: $34.00) is a son of Blackfriars on debut for Colin Webster. This gelding has trialled twice in readiness for his first start at the races, the latest trial seeing him place over 1000m at Belmont. I don’t think the race brigade are anything special so a first starter winning the race wouldn’t be a shock.
Race 2. (16:19) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Handicap (1MW) 1000m
6 Deacalda (Bet Now: $2.30) for me. Simon Miller trains this filly, who is just under a couple of months between runs since debuting over 1100m at Northam where she started odds and bolted up under Pike in a maiden which has produced three winners. No trials under the belt for her return but should get over comfortably from the barrier.
3 Festival Miss (Bet Now: $3.00) looks an above average filly for Team Williams who resumed in a Class One at this track/distance last Wednesday where she loomed large and tried hard but The Ninth Hour packed too many punches late. Should take good improvement from that outing. Just depends what start she has to give.
1 Magic Planet (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of Planet Five for Adam Durrant who is three weeks between runs since racing at Bunbury (Metro) where he didn’t have much luck in the straight when looking to poke through behind Chix Pic, who ran a beauty in the Belgravia last Saturday. That form reads well. Just needs luck from a potentially awkward draw.
Race 3. (17:04) Evolution Av Handicap (72+) 1200m
Up to 1200m, I think 4 Masquerade (Bet Now: $1.70) is a great. Resumed over this trip at Belmont when second to Electric Light before stepping back to 1000m when no match for the low flying Agent Pippa. Back up to 1200m and slightly down in depth, hard fit, gee I think he’s a near good thing against this lot.
Most interesting runner on the entire program is 6 Seannie (Bet Now: $6.00), a former star juvenile who returns to WA after a failed stint in Victoria with the Busuttin/Young team. No trials, public at least, for her return, but if she’s anywhere near right, I’d be very wary. Market and yard will tell you if she’s ready.
2 The Celt (Bet Now: $12.00) could be a sleeper at odds. Anne King trains this gelding, who ran over 1400m at Bunbury (Metro) three weeks back where I thought he was pretty good late behind Archernar Star. Has a really good record at Ascot and from gate one he should do no work. An absolute must for multiples.
Race 4. (17:44) Seven Wonders Natural Hair Product Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Great to see 7 Pearls And Prawns (Bet Now: $2.00) back at the races. Quality mare for Brock Lewthwaite who is first up and is likely heading down the Mares path during the Carnival, kicking off here. Created a great impression in her first prep and her recent Lark Hill trial win was absolutely dynamite to the eye. Keen to see her.
Up to 1200m should suit the Team Williams trained 13 Sally’s Realm (Bet Now: $4.00), who resumed over 1000m at Belmont a month ago where she got back but worked home strongly late when third to the in form Night Voyage. I think she wants further than 1200m but she’s certainly got enough quality to win.
8 Distant Trilogy (Bet Now: $13.00) looks the leader and should give a great sight on speed. This gelding attempted to lead all the way over 1200m at Bunbury and gave a decent enough kick but couldn’t quite see it out when second to Dawn Armada. Only has 52.5kg on her back, should lead and give a sight in front.
Race 5. (18:22) Breast Cancer Care WA Handicap (66+) 1400m
5 Royal Command (Bet Now: $1.60). He was 37 weeks between runs when resuming at Bunbury (Metro) and I thought his run in defeat from the back was outstanding, beating all bar the hard fit/in form Mutliverse. Should land in an ideal spot near the speed and is a second up winner. Very likeable here against this lot.
11 Platoon is on the seven day back up for the Neville Parnham team after racing over this track/distance last Saturday where he tried very hard but clearly was no match for the class and brilliance of Arcadia Queen. Don’t think there is a horse of that class here. Just needs to overcome the sticky gate.
9 Freo (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a really progressive gelding who was one of the runs of the day when resuming over this track/distance a fortnight ago when closing off hard from the back to run a close up sixth to Jeraft, who won again last Saturday to frank the form. Would love him at the mile, but hard to ignore the resumption.
Race 6. (19:00) Asian Beau Stakes 1400m
Blinkers on first time for 3 Galaxy Star (Bet Now: $1.40) tells me they want to win this race and secure a start in the Railway. She was outstanding in the Northerly first up, closing off strongly off a moderate tempo to just miss out on picking up Man Booker. Prefer her at 1600m+, but she’s got the brilliance to beat these.
5 Action (Bet Now: $4.20) is a stablemate of Galaxy Star who was very good himself first up, albeit in a much easier race at Bunbury (Metro) when a closing second to Archernar Star. This is one horse who looks as if he’ll definitely be on the Perth Cup path. Got the brilliance, but enough to beat Galaxy Star? Not sure.
I’m giving 2 Red Ora (Bet Now: $13.00) an outside winning chance. Steve Wolfe trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced since the Belmont Sprint when down the track behind Material Man. Bomb fresh, loves racing at Ascot and looked sharp in a recent Albany trial win. Outside winning chance if he can land on speed and they walk.
Race 7. (19:40) Prince Of Wales Stakes 1000m
My instructions to Randy on 10 Agent Pippa (Bet Now: $9.00) would be to jump and run. 51.5kg on her back, I hope they use her asset, which is sustained speed. She did that at this track/distance two weeks ago where she led all the way and proved too good. Just hope she is allowed to run to try and pinch it.
9 Celebrity Dream (Bet Now: $4.40) is a quality mare for Adam Durrant who resumed in the Crawford a fortnight ago and I thought she was excellent, working home strongly to run a close up third to the bonny mare Dainty Tess. Has a very good second up record…just wish this race was 1200m, then I’d be all over her.
If they go mad in front the closer will be 2 Profit Street (Bet Now: $23.00). The Giadesco team trains this seven year old, who hasn’t raced since the Idyllic Prince when down the track behind Rebel King. Two strong trials tell me there is intent to run well first up. Will concede a start but will be very strong at the end.
Race 8. (20:15) Fine Wine Wholesalers Handicap (72+) 1600m
2 Rockon Tommy (Bet Now: $4.20) for me in the get out. Bill Doughty trains this gelding, who ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago where I thought O’Donnell rated him perfectly in front and the ride certainly got him the win. From gate one, Knuckey has plenty of options and should get run of the race stuff.
10 Mississippi Delta (Bet Now: $3.90) is a handy mare for Team Williams who could well be heading down the Perth Cup path. Showed good promise at 2000m+ last time in and thought the resumption in the Rockon Tommy race was very good. If she can sit closer in the run from the good draw, she’ll take beating.
4 Red Publisher (Bet Now: $27.00) is another who should get the suck run. He got that in the Rockon Tommy race, getting the box seat, so he seemingly had his chance but wasn’t beaten far. Should get the trip behind Rockon Tommy and follow that horse and its every move. Doubt he can win, but one for exotics.
