A strong card of racing has been assembled for Rosehill this Saturday where it is Winter Challenge Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:40) Welcome Rydalmere CBC Handicap 1500m
4 D’Argento (Bet Now: $1.95) is a very smart youngster for the Chris Waller yard. He trialled up really well prior to debuting at Newcastle where he had three wide cover most of the way and launched late to grab the plunge horse Smartedge on the peg. The trial experts rated that horse highly but they also gave a good push to D’Argento. He looks smart and I’m keen to play.
All you can is win and that is what 3 Hostwin Meraki (Bet Now: $6.00) has done in two career outings. Got the job done nicely fresh at Newcastle before going to Hawkesbury where he took on the older horses and despite doing a bit wrong, he was very strong late. You always have to give a big tick to two year olds beating older horses.
5 Almighty (Bet Now: $11.00) is a beautifully bred colt for Team Snowden and James Harron Bloodstock. He has placed in both career outings, starting off at Beaumont-Newcastle behind Siege Of Quebec before running third to Kailenny at Newcastle as an odds on pop. He’ll be much better on top of the ground here and should measure up.
Race 2. (12:15) ATC Owner Benefits Card Handicap (72) 1100m
Giving the nod to 3 Wide Acclaim (Bet Now: $7.00). This horse hasn’t raced for a tick over two weeks since racing over 1100m at Canterbury where he sat off the speed and chased hard all the way when third to Star Crossed, who ran okay last Saturday. With Panya on and her claim, I’d love to see her punch forward and lead, something that is a big advantage to do at the 1100m start here.
8 Rockafella (Bet Now: $4.40) is a nice type that resumes for Team Cummings. Created a good impression in his first prep, winning two of three, with the failure being a fourth Fabrizio at Canterbury…not a bad form line. Been given three solid trials to prepare, so for mine, he should be wound up to go well fresh.
5 Parker’s Piece (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very interesting runner here. Former kiwi making her Australian debut for the Kris Lees camp. Her form in similar grade races back home does read well with subsequent blacktype form around her. Trials leading in have been good and she is a definite market/yard watch.
Race 3. (12:50) Sydney Spring Carnival On Sale Plate 1400m
7 Reach For Heaven (Bet Now: $5.50) is an above average gelding for the Kris Lees yard who resumed with a dominant win at Newcastle before going to Canterbury where I thought he was totally unsuited by the tight track/slow tempo and really was no hope where he was when fourth to Awoke. If he can sit closer in the run, and with a more genuine tempo, he can bounce back hard.
2 Insensata (Bet Now: $3.10) is low flying at the moment for the Jason Coyle yard. Charged late to win over 1500m here two back before stepping back to 1350m and producing a brilliant finishing burst to win despite wanting to lay in. Very promising and has to be rated highly against this lot.
He’s probably one of the best maidens going around, but there is a reason why 9 Star Of Monsoon (Bet Now: $16.00) is still a maiden- He just doesn’t attack the line. Had every chance over the Wyong mile last time out but was very weak and poor late when second. Back in trip, gets the claim…doubt he wins, but exotics yes.
Race 4. (13:25) TAB Highway Plate (Class 3) 1500m
2 Appoint Percy (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented galloper for the Luke Pepper yard who does have the class edge on these and is a proven Highway performer. He resumed over 1300m on a bottomless Wagga surface and couldn’t really pick his feet up but his effort was sound behind Gentleman Max. Gets really good weight relief here and second up last prep he ran fourth to Pomelo. Reads well for this.
14 Chadana (Bet Now: $17.00) is a nice filly for the Dryden/Collings yard who wasn’t far away in an 1800m Highway here before racing on the Acton track at Canberra where she was heavily backed but the slow tempo was clearly against her when running a narrow second. Back to 1500m here should mean more speed and if that speed does eventuate, she’ll run a beauty.
13 Bunny Bad Girl (Bet Now: $19.00) is a three year old filly trained by Melissa Dennett at Tamworth who deserves a crack at a Highway. Stuck on well two back at Coonamble behind Minimahal before going to Gunnedah where she ran gamely behind proven Highway performer Barricade. That form reads well for a race like this.
Race 5. (14:00) #theraces Handicap (72) 1200m
I’m not sure what 9 Feirin (Bet Now: $9.50) beat on debut last week at Gsoford but gee she looked sharp to the eye. Sat on speed under Tommy Berry and when she was asked for the effort, she found another gear and sprinted away for a dominant win, running time too. Stable always produce a nice one in town from the provincials and this girl fits the bill.
2 Faith’s Encore (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented filly for the Snowden camp who resumed against the older horses at this track/distance a fortnight back and I thought her effort was very good. Got a fair way back, slightly held up but I loved her closing effort. Back to her own age/sex, has class and should take some beating.
5 Second Step (Bet Now: $13.00) gave them a spanking two back at the provincials before racing at Warwick Farm three weeks ago where she was specked at longer odds and attempted to lead all the way. Gave a kick but was swamped late but wasn’t far off Kings Of Leon, who has since franked the form. Back to her own age/sex, she can measure up here.
Race 6. (14:40) Schweppes Handicap (85) 2000m
6 Zourkhan (Bet Now: $5.00) has been very good in two runs back from a break for the Chris Waller. Got the nose down and wanted to win fresh before running a narrow second to Bullish Stock. Maps superbly here and Bowman takes over from a sweet draw, up to 2000m. Rates highly for mine.
8 Life O’Brien (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very consistent type for Team Cummings who has been up a long time but continues to race very well. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he was an alarming drifter in betting where he sat off the speed and chased hard all the way when third to Collateral. Draws well and McEvoy steers, so he ticks a few boxes.
7 Magical Stance (Bet Now: $10.00) comes through the Kingsguard race here four weeks weeks ago and I thought his effort to get as close as he did was enormous given the power of work he did from the wide gate and for him to be there on the line was great. Provided that hasn’t busted him, he can go close here up to 2000m.
Race 7. (15:20) Winter Challenge 1500m
See no reason to jump off 10 Liapari (Bet Now: $4.80). This horse is low flying at the moment for the Chris Waller camp. Comes off a gutsy win at the Warwick Farm mile last time out where the race shape said he couldn’t win the race but Bowman got the best out of him and lifted it to win. The mile probably sees him out so back to 1500m on the home track is a big tick.
2 Snippets Land (Bet Now: $7.00) is a hard one to trust for Team Snowden but he has to be included here as a threat. He comes through the Winter Stakes here a fortnight back won by Slightly Sweet and really, he went around as if it was a barrier trial. Never extended at any stage and pretty much went to the line under a hold. Give him clear air here and I’ll be keen to see what he produces.
11 Sultan Of Swing (Bet Now: $9.00) is the very interesting runner for mine. Craig Ritchie trained kiwi who has been okay in recent times, the latest at the Randwick mile behind Sound Proposition, who franked the form last week. Trial recently behind Pelethronius was good and that horse won last Saturday.
Race 8. (16:00) ATC Thanks Our Owners Handicap (85) 1350m
Going to have a chuck at the stumps with 1 Wouldn’t It Be Nice (Bet Now: $21.00). Grand campaigner for Paul Perry who, like stablemate Salerno, just needs that little bit of weight relief and he gets it here with the drop in grade. Thought he ran really well here last time out, making ground behind Calanda, who went on to win the Ramornie, so the form reads well, draws a nice gate and hopefully he won’t be far away.
5 More To Gain (Bet Now: $6.50) is such an interesting runner for me here. Turner/Poletti trained galloper who has a stack of ability and though is better suited over further, and on a wet track, I think he can run a ripper here off the back of an outstanding trial recently at Randwick behind Spending To Win. Might need the run, but from what I see/hear/read, he’s going so well.
3 Embley (Bet Now: $8.00) had a bit of specking at longer odds when resuming at Warwick Farm three weeks back and while he didn’t win, he certainly caught the eye when closing off late behind Isorich. Does have a very good second up record, he likes Rosehill and for mine he is the knockout chance.
Race 9. (16:40) NSW Racehorse Owners Association Trophy (80) 1500m
2 Violent Snow (Bet Now: $46.00) really interests me here. Quality mare for Jason Warren who has had no luck at her past two outings, both at Caulfield. Two back she was four wide no cover for the trip and fought on well to be not far away, then a fortnight back she just couldn’t get into the race from the back in a slowly run affair. On her best form, she’s better than these I feel.
4 Reiby Rampart (Bet Now: $13.00) is a gutsy mare for the Jason Attard yard who is never far away from the action. She ran over 1400m at Warwick Farm three weeks back where she had a nice sit just off the speed and when she was let down, she looked the winner but she had to settle for second to Love’s A Fantasy. Bursting to win a race and she gets her chance here.
13 Nahema (Bet Now: $34.00) resumed at the midweeks at Canterbury on July 12 without a trial and she just looked a bit in need of the outing. Lacked a turn of foot when required but her effort was still sound behind Reward For Fashion. Think she wants further than 1500m, but for exotics, I’d definitely include her.
