An outstanding nine race card has been assembled for Randwick this Saturday, headlined by a Group l double header, the Surround Stakes (1400m) and Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:55) Tab Highway Hcp (c2) 1000m
I think he’s an each way gamble here 5 Eurosay (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) for Todd Smart. He was excellent in a Highway here two back behind Mr Wong before going to Moruya where he was caught four wide no cover for the trip. Entitled to drop away yet had the hide to still find the line and finish a close up fifth. Any sort of good luck from the gate here and he’ll go close.
Metro benchmark form is a good starting point for these Highways so 1 Glamour Cat (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) has to be respected. Joe Cleary trains this mare, who ran under the lights at Canterbury last time out and tried very hard from off the speed and really, another stride and she wins. Tricky gate but stable finds J Mac to take the ride.
13 Foxie La Belle (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a huge query here. Terry Robinson trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since December 22 2018 in a Highway at Warwick Farm when struggling on wet ground behind Moobi. You’d struggle to back her to win a Taree maiden off her trial, but she’s got runs on the board to warrant respect and a yard/market watch.
Race 2. (13:30) Sweet Embrace Stakes 1200m
Going to take a chance with the Chris Waller trained 7 Hungry Heart (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS). She hasn’t raced since debuting down the Flemington straight back on January 11 where she was a couple of lengths off the speed throughout and seemingly looked lost, but once Johnny Allen put the whip into the left hand, she lengthened quite nicely when second to Jabali Ridge. Comes back to Sydney and loved the way she closed off in a recent trial, a fast trial.
2 Stellar Pauline (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS) is a Team Snowden trained filly that comes back to Sydney after contesting the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast where she was very good in defeat when second to Away Game, who has since won the Widden and ran a beauty in the Blue Diamond, so that form reads very well, and looked good in a recent trial win.
Good little test for 8 Harmonium (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) but there was plenty to like about the debut win over 1000m at Gosford. Sat on speed throughout before being clicked up on the turn and she scooted clear, holding a safe margin to the line and running really good time relative to the day, which is such a good sign for a two year old at start one. Just needs to stretch it to 1200m.
Race 3. (14:05) Skyline Stakes 1200m
Think this is a good race for the Gerald Ryan colt 4 Mission River (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS). Has finished runner up both career outings, firstly behind Rulership before contesting the Lonhro Plate here two weeks ago and working home strongly behind Supreme Idea in a real on pace domination. Up to 1200m, hard fit, he’s very likeable.
All you can do is win and that is what 1 Prague (Bet Now: $2.60 TOP ODDS) has done in his career to date, winning 2/2. Debuted with a strong win at Canterbury before going to the Canonbury where he was far too good for his rivals. Form out of that race has been good, he’s in the right stable and the way he’s gone about, 1200m should be ideal.
Not sure 6 Tommy Gold (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is Slipper quality, but he’s got quality this colt. Resumed on the Kenso track track and worked home very strongly against the track pattern when second to impressive debut winner Kaakit Akit. Tick over trial was quite good, he’ll be strong at the end. Does he have the class to beat these?
Race 4. (14:40) Liverpool City Cup 1300m
Would love to get a market push for 3 Imaging (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS), a former European galloper making his Australian debut for Chris Waller. His overseas form isn’t A1 top shelf, but as we’ve seen in the past, you don’t need strong overseas form to be a serious galloper in Australia, and his two trials leading in have each been outstanding. Think he’ll win a good race.
I think we’ll get a good guide here into the legitimacy of the Doncaster claims for 2 Cascadian (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS). Was keen on him first up in the Southern Cross two weeks ago and I thought he was there to pounce on Special Reward, but that horse just packed too many punches and was too good. Fitter, firmer footing, he’s hard to beat. But want to see him put these away to be a legitimate Doncaster contender.
8 Lanciato (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is the interesting runner. Mark Newnham trains this gelding, who can produce an explosive finale if he gets conditions to suit. First up off a long break, I’m keen to see him resume. He last raced during the Scone Carnival when down the track in the Luskin Star. Dodged the Spring, is back for the Autumn and has trialled nicely leading in.
Race 5. (15:15) Guy Walter Stakes 1400m
Want to give 1 Reelem In Ruby (Bet Now: $7.50) another chance. Had trialled up really well for Team Snowden prior to her resumption in the Triscay two weeks ago where she was back, wide and really never in the mix when down the track behind Sweet Deal in what was just about a career worst from her. She’s better than that, and should lap up the firmer deck.
Win of the day from 4 Sweet Deal (Bet Now: $2.50) in the Triscay. Sustained speed from the front, burning the candle at both ends and she gave her fellow mares a proper spanking in an outstanding return. You’d like to think the set up here is better for her with 1400m and a dry track. Just a query on whether or not that resumption took a chunk out of her.
2 Noire (Bet Now: $15.00) is a quality mare for James Cummings who should take some beating here. She had trialled up well prior to resuming in the Triscay where she got a fair way back in the run but liked the way she finished her race off behind Sweet Deal. Has a really good second up record and up to 1400m is a big tick for her.
Race 6. (15:50) Surround Stakes 1400m
Going the way of 5 Probabeel (Bet Now: $4.00). Jamie Richards trains this filly, who is no stranger to Sydney having raced here this time last year as well as the Spring. 2/2 this prep back home in NZ, the latest seeing her being dominant in the Karaka Classic. Loved the way she closed off in a recent trial and hopefully she can take advantage of the inside draw.
If 1 Flit (Bet Now: $2.90) can produce what she did in the Light Fingers, gee she’ll take some beating here. Blinkers went on for the resumption and it improved her big time. She was able to sit near the speed and once Bowman found clear air, it was race over and she won with ease. Up to 1400m and on top of the ground looks only beneficial…clearly a leading chance.
6 Missile Mantra (Bet Now: $27.00) looks bit odds here for Team Snowden. Another stride and she beats Flit in the Thousand Guineas. Resumed behind that filly in the Light Fingers where she got back and didn’t really fire a shot in a race dominated on speed. Big ticks for her is that she gets gate one to sit much closer in the run and the blinkers are back on.
Race 7. (16:30) Chipping Norton Stakes 1600m
Still not sure how 4 Dreamforce (Bet Now: $4.40) didn’t win the Apollo. It was a fantastic first up effort, but just found one better on the day in Alizee. The thing that beat him was that Hush Writer kicked up to lead, but in saying that, he did get a good run outside him and was there to win. 1600m on firmer footing, and he should be able to get control this time around.
‘The Shark’ is lurking in the Sydney waters. 3 Te Akau Shark (Bet Now: $2.70) is back in Sydney and returns off the back of his first win at the big time, sprouting wings late from the back to win over 1400m at Te Rapa. Visually stunning and backed up on the clock. Up to 1600m against his old foe Dreamforce, I think he’s definitely improved from when they last clashed.
6 Danceteria (Bet Now: $15.00) is a huge query here. High class animal for Kris Lees that is having his first full prep at Newcastle after the Cox Plate, where he was wide throughout and a beaten horse before the turn in a total forgive. Spoke to Jamie Lovett last week and he told me this guy is going well, much like Mustajeer, and we saw what he did last Saturday. At his best, he can beat these.
Race 8. (17:10) Ranvet (bm88) 2000m
Think you have to butter up again with 6 Attorney (Bet Now: $6.50). This import resumed over the mile here two weeks ago where he was pretty much off the bit for the entire race, but what impressed me is that he picked up and really surged hard late behind Matowi. He could have just whacked away, but he actually finished off with purpose. He’ll eat up 2000m, fitter, on top of the ground, clearly the one to beat.
Really keen to see how 3 Ilwendo (Bet Now: $7.50) goes here. Matty Smith trains this imported stayer, who has done little wrong since coming to Australia. Resumed with a fab win at Canterbury over 1550m, lumping 60.5kg and his class coming to the fore at the end. Tick over trial behind stablemate Fierce Impact was very good and he looks hard to beat.
13 Think It Over (Bet Now: $14.00) will eat up the 2000m here I feel. Kerry Parker trains this four year old and originally, I had him marked as a Provincial Championships horse, but the way he’s come back, he is looking a stayer, so I like him up in trip from 1550m last start where he hit a flat spot on the turn at Canterbury but picked up and was strong late. Bigger track, firmer footing, and up in trip, he is a chance for sure.
Race 9. (17:50) Quincy Seltzer (bm88) 1200m
In the corner of 6 Yamazaki (Bet Now: $6.50). This mare produced stunning late splits to win at the Gold Coast two back before backing up a week later in the Magic Millions Mares and was nearer the inside, which for the meeting was quicksand, yet was only beaten a couple of lengths by Invincibella. Freshened up and kept to the mark with a good trial win last week at Hawkesbury.
1 Roheryn (Bet Now: $6.00) has returned in really good order for James Cummings. Dug in strongly to win here first up before stepping up to 1300m here two weeks ago when doing work near the speed from the gate and stuck on really well in defeat behind Vegadaze. Hard fit now and back on firmer footing, he’s a leading chance.
8 Asharani (Bet Now: $17.00) has been given a little freshen up by Kris Lees, having not raced since January 11 here when a well held second behind Helga, but the run was still pretty good in defeat. Not sure what the stable has in mind for this girl in terms of a target race, but does have residual fitness and the tick over trial was good.
