Saturday racing in Brisbane returns to Doomben this weekend, where the feature race is the Tatts Members Cup (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:38) 4 Pines Pacific Ale Plate (c3) 1600m
11 Eric The Eel (Bet Now: $2.90) on top. He’s teased to be a really good horse but when you have that thought, he lets punters down. In saying that, thought there was plenty of merit in his first up run at Eagle Farm a fortnight back, finishing off strongly from well off the pace behind Stampe. If he can sit a pair or two closer in the run, he’ll look the winner for the most part.
2 Kings Full (Bet Now: $3.80) looks really well suited up to the mile for Kacy Fogden. He resumed over 1300m at the Sunny Coast and was a bit one paced in the straight, but stayed on and was good late when a close up third to Ocean Waves. Should have won his lone run at this track/distance last prep and has enormous upside.
8 Ultimate Ring (Bet Now: $8.00) isn’t far off another win for Kelly Schweida. Ran over this track/distance last Wednesday when getting a mile back in the run and really, never a winning factor, but worked home really strongly. If he can sit closer in the run this time around, I think he’ll take some beating with hard race fitness under the belt.
Race 2. (14:13) Hit105 (bm90) 2000m
Have to include 5 Raqeeq (Bet Now: $2.70). Was well supported two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and under a lovely ride from a very much in form Matty McGillivray, the Chris Waller galloper was far too good for his rivals. Still has ratings points in hand and really, only has to be holding his form to be going close to be winning again IMO.
Up to 2000m should suit the Kris Lees trained 4 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $2.25). Was a real eye catcher first up over 1500m behind Romani Girl before going to the Matowi race from two weeks ago and just didn’t have the zip in the legs, looking like a horse that clearly wants further, which he gets here, and third up, should be close to peak fitness.
6 Ruby Guru (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Mick Nolan trained mare who is racing well but can’t quite crack it for a win. She comes through the Raqeeq race from two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where she got back and found the line pretty well but was no match for the finale produced by the Waller stayer. Think she runs well again, but doubt she wins.
Race 3. (14:48) Ipg Marketing Jewel Prelude 1110m
Looks pretty straight forward here with 1 Rothfire (Bet Now: $1.20). The ratings boys and girls say that he is right up there as the best two year old to race so far this season off the back of what he did first up two weeks ago at Eagle Farm, toying with his rivals yet again and smashed the clock in doing so. He could easily measure up in a Golden Slipper and I’d love to see him in Sydney. Only bad luck beats him here.
3 Mass Destruction (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy juvenile for Tony Gollan that returns to racing, having not raced since January 18 over 1000m at Eagle Farm when back in an on speed dominated affair but liked the way he finished his race off behind Mishani Miss. Reckon the 1200m of the Final will suit him better, but he can be more than competitive here.
7 Igor (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Holy Roman Emperor colt for Kacy Fogden that is on debut. This colt has had a couple of trials in readiness for start one, the second catching my eye on Feb 3 at the Gold Coast when a close up second to Xerri. Not sure he beats Rothfire, but will run well I think because the stable is flying at the moment.
Race 4. (15:23) Winning Edge Presentations 2yo 1110m
6 Poupee (Bet Now: $27.00) is a daughter of Better Than Ready for Stuart Kendrick that broke the maiden tag on her home track at the Sunny Coast back on Feb 2 when beating four rivals, but what I liked about the win is that she was challenged in the straight, but was strong to the line and through it, suggesting 1200m here will be no issue and looks the leader.
5 Redoute’s Image (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Kris Lees trained filly that was very good on debut at Newcastle in the Max Lees on Hunter Day before being spelled. Resumed behind Rothfire at Eagle Farm and was clearly no match for that guy, but didn’t throw in the towel and was solid. Back to her own sex, she’ll take some beating.
3 Mishani Miss (Bet Now: $26.00) looks to have her share of talent. Happy to include her based on the last start effort at Eagle Farm behind Rothfire after getting a mile back in the run. Her late splits weren’t too bad at all despite the winner being dominant. No horse of that class here and is suited up in trip. Knockout chance for sure.
Race 5. (16:02) Members At Tattersall's Hcp 1200m
I think 4 Manaya (Bet Now: $6.50) is worth another chance. She was well fancied when resuming at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago behind Mishani El Lobo but that horse just got away with murder in front and those from the back, including Manaya, had no chance. Fitter and back to Doomben off a more genuine tempo, she’ll take some beating.
6 Grey Missile (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Red Element for Team Edmonds that had his first run for the stable back on January 25 at the Sunny Coast when really well supported at odds and the bets were landed as he sat on speed and proved too strong for his rivals. Break between runs with weight relief, in a winnable race, hard to hold out.
5 Invincible Al… (Bet Now: $7.00) I think the last time he won prior to three weeks ago, Moses was parting the sea. But that long run of outs came to an end at Eagle Farm under a lovely ride from one of the more in form riders in Queensland, Baylee Nothdurft. How often do we see that these bludgers that win one repeat the dose soon after. Could easily do it without surprising.
Race 6. (16:42) G.h. Mumm Jewel Prelude Plate 1200m
Going with 1 The Odyssey (Bet Now: $3.70), who won the 2YO Jewel last year and is looking to win the 3YO version. Hasn’t raced since going at a good clip in front in the QTIS race on Magic Millions Day and just tiring late behind Outback Barbie. 1200m fresh tells me he’s still got a good amount of fitness, looks the leader and should be hard to run down.
9 Exondabeach… (Bet Now: $3.00) just how good is he? Impressive debut winner at the Sunny Coast before going straight to Saturday grade two weeks back at Eagle Farm where he was backed as if unbeatable and despite some nervous moments in the straight, gee he lengthened like a good horse. Really keen to see him up to 1200m.
5 Baby Boomer (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Tony Gollan trained three year old that was confidently supported three weeks ago at Eagle Farm where he got back but in a decent enough spot and presented as the winner 300m out, but couldn’t get past Master Jamie, who was too tough and too good. He’s third up now, so should be at peak fitness.
Race 7. (17:22) Stav, Abby & Matt (bm75) 1110m
Market will be the guide here. 5 Solar Star (Bet Now: $7.50) is a talented mare for Tony Gollan that resumes and I dare say she will be popular given her form from last prep, which saw her give boom horse Emerald Kingdom 3kg and still beat him. Also placed behind a really good one in Tambo’s Mate. No official trials, but draws well, gets the claim for Huxtable. Just want a market push.
15 Wandabaa (Bet Now: $3.60) is taking on the older horses again but does have good form around her. Kris Lees trains this filly, who was far from disgraced two back behind the flying Emerald Kingdom before bumping into a really smart one in Exondabeach last time out. No horse of that class here and given she’s a 3YO filly, she’s well in at the weights.
16 Shamurt (Bet Now: $16.00) can be a big improver here second up from a break. Resumed over 1200m at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago and on face value, it was just a run behind stablemate Boom Boy, but she was only beaten just over two lengths and did parade like she would need the run. Good second up record and back in trip, she can win for sure.
Race 8. (18:02) Tattersall's Member's Cup 1600m
10 Impasse (Bet Now: $3.70) has been super in his first few runs for Matty Dunn and I think he can continue that here. Ran over 1400m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where he just got too far back in the run and was forced quite wide on the turn. Loved the way he closed off despite never really a winning threat to Snitch. Good record at Doomben and is hard to beat.
4 Silvera (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to find a really good race here. He was heavily backed when racing at Eagle Farm three weeks ago but just got too far out of his ground but finished off the race with real purpose to run third. Can sit closer in the run and he should be close to peak fitness. Running out of chances, but gets a great chance here.
2 Spectroscope (Bet Now: $10.00) has been with Nat McCall for a little while and he’s nearing a win I think. Ran over the mile at Eagle Farm three weeks back and really liked the way he finished off, surging late to just miss out on picking up New Universe, but the head on shows that if he runs straight, he probably wins. Puts everything together here, he’ll go close.
Race 9. (18:40) Stella Artois Hcp (c6) 1350m
12 Red Chase (Bet Now: $3.90) should be close to peak fitness for Desleigh Forster third up from a spell. Needed the run first up behind Emerald Kingdom before having around a month off and ran over 1400m at Eagle Farm where he was really good in defeat when fourth to Sister Patti. Back to the Doomben 1350m and hard fit now, he’ll take some beating.
4 Tokoriki Lad (Bet Now: $14.00) doesn’t mind having a spell between runs but Tony Gollan does have him going well and is a key chance here. Comes through the Impasse race from several weeks weeks ago where he tried hard and came with a good run but was clearly no match for the Matt Dunn galloper late. Backing him to win does take some courage, but a win wouldn’t shock at all.
1 Auerbach (Bet Now: $9.50) is a big improver here I feel. Chris Waller trains this galloper, who resumed three weeks ago at Eagle Farm over 1200m where he was ridden pretty much like it was a barrier trial, but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Invincible Al. Doomben 1350m record is very good and has a sharp second up record.
