Nine races have been set down for Moonee Valley this Saturday for Australia Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Australia Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Australia Stakes

Race 1. (12:40) Mitty's (bm70) 1500m
I like 6 Rioyuki (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) here for Beetroot Williams. Her last couple of runs have been quite good, but has been plagued by bad gates where she has had to be dragged back, the latest run at Caulfield where she was near last and worked home well without threatening. If the inside gate is used to advantage, she’ll take beating.
3 Zourisky (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) has her share of talent for Peter Moody. Very sharp debut win at Geelong when leading throughout. That ensured she was hard in the market at Cranbourne last time out but after sitting near the speed, she was very one paced when asked to go and whacked away for third. Have to give her another chance off the debut performance.
5 Indented Head (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is one I can entertain for wider multiples. Didn’t really set the world on fire fresh at Sandown before going to Cranbourne where she took advantage of gate one, sat near the speed, and once Kersley found clear air, away she went and she was dominant. Off that, I think she’s in with a shout.
Race 2. (13:15) Ladbrokes (bm78) 1600m
3 Sweet Karolina (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is racing very well for Team Corstens and confident she can bounce back into the winners list. Was with her at Flemington last start at the mile. Unfortunately she just got into a nasty spot where she couldn’t get a chance to build the revs but once clear, she savaged the line. She’s ready to win again.
5 American Angel (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS) has been quite consistent this time in and that consistency was rewarded with a win at Caulfield on Boxing Day, helped by a peach from Jamie Kah, who sticks with the mare for here. Good record over the mile and this looks a winnable race.
2 Modern Millie (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a Chris Waller trained mare that is having her second Australian run here. First run came at Flemington where she got way too keen in the run and had nothing left for the straight behind Stay Gold. Market support late was strong, so giving her another look.
Race 3. (13:50) Ascend Sales Trophies Hcp 1600m
8 Zoltan (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) gets the nod for me in a pretty thin race. He was good from the back at his Australian debut at Caulfield. He then went to Warrnanbool and tried hard, but was clearly no match for a Stakes class horse, Tuvalu. I think he’ll lead from gate one and with upside, take beating.
Good test here for 2 Stay Gold (Bet Now: $2.30 TOP ODDS) against the boys in an open handicap, but she’s a mare in career best form who has a liking for the track. Peach from Kah got her the win at Flemington last time against the Mares, making it back to back wins. More depth here, but I think she measures up.
5 Dark Wanderer (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is an interesting runner. Tassie raider for Sarah Cotton that comes through the Tasmania Stakes at Hobart when leading and fighting on okay late behind surprise winner Lim’s Cruiser, with The Inevitable in second. I think that form is okay for what is a winnable race here. One for exotics.
Race 4. (14:25) Entry Edu. M Ralston Cup-bm70 2040m
5 Dundirtcheap (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) should love the rise to 2040m. Resumed over the mile at Caulfield where he just lacked the change up speed to go with them but was good late when third to Savannah Cloud. He’s got more upside than most, proven at the trip and maps nicely from the gate.
4 Reliable Dude (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a Matty Ellerton trained gelding who is knocking on the door to win. Looked like it would come at Caulfield last time out but after a peach ride from Lane, he failed to finish it off when a well held second behind Dirty Deeds. Like him up in trip…but he’s getting close to D-Day.
9 Port Royal (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is racing like he will eat up the 2040m here. Got a mile out of his ground over 1700m at Geelong last time out and worked home with real purpose when a close up third to High Torque. Failed at this trip last prep, but that was on a Synthetic trip, so want to give him another chance.
Race 5. (15:00) VOBIS Gold Carat 1200m
3 Lord Paramount (Bet Now: $10.00) has his share of talent. Maher/Eustace trained three year old that resumed over 1000m here in a maiden where he got into a bumping battle with The Globe but negated that, balanced up and surged hard late to nab Meschever near the peg. He looks to have come back a better post the gelding operation, so keen to see how he goes here.
7 Danny’s St Darci (Bet Now: $5.50) is a beauty for Archie Alexander and confident she can go close again. Lovely steers from Josh Richards on this girl her past two, winning here two back before bolting up at Caulfield at the midweeks. Seemingly has a liking for the track, hard fit, in form…hard to beat.
2 Rusheen (Bet Now: $34.00) has been a bit hit and miss this time in but his best is good enough to run well here I feel. Just lost sight of the bunny at Caulfield last time but was good late when third to Danny’s St Darci. His last run at this track, he was very good behind Unflinching, which reads well.
Race 6. (15:40) Steamatic (bm70) 1600m
2 Gentleman Roy (Bet Now: $2.30) deserves another chance. Put together a couple of wins on the bounce prior to racing at the midweeks at Caulfield where he attempted to lead throughout and I thought had every chance when nailed late by Savannah Cloud. Hard to knock the form he is in and is a key threat.
4 Gracias Amigo (Bet Now: $9.50) is four weeks between runs for Grahame Begg since a strong win at Flemington on New Years Day where he was given a peach by McNeil and was there to be run down but found under pressure and was strong to the line in winning. Finds a winnable race here.
9 Austrata (Bet Now: $23.00) is a son of Australia for Chris Waller that resumes. He has been hit and miss in his short career to date but his best is certainly good enough to be dangerous here. He is better suited at 2000m+, but has jumped out well to get ready and this isn’t a strong 70.
Race 7. (16:20) Australia Stakes 1200m
WFA is a query with 10 Marabi (Bet Now: $1.85), but she could well be better than these and assert herself as Oakleigh Plate favourite. Her win in the Christmas Stakes was electric, and the way she won, sitting on a hot speed and fighting on superbly late, was the sign of a classy animal. Just a query on whether or not that has busted her.
I’m not sure the MV 1200m will be the ideal set up for 6 Sinawann (Bet Now: $7.00) but I think he does have a bit of class/quality. Hasn’t raced since the Kevin Heffernan when smashing the clock in winning and asserting himself as a horse who will measure up at the top level this time in. Keen to see how he goes.
1 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $9.50) won this race last year and he loves firm ground so he gets a couple of big ticks leading into this. Has been kept on ice, having not raced since the Kevin Heffernan when a strong third to Sinawann in a race that rated through the roof. He’ll run his usual honest race.
Race 8. (17:00) Rendr (bm70) 1000m
I’m keen to see how 8 Bluestone Lane (Bet Now: $17.00) resumes. Cliff Brown trained gelding that hasn’t raced since September 19 when good late from off the speed at Bendigo, producing good late splits. Tends to race well on the fresh side and has jumped out super in readiness for his return.
12 Midwest (Bet Now: $1.95) is 3/3 this time in and no reason why he can’t make it four on the bounce. Sustained speed from the front saw him bolt up at Caulfield last time under a good ride from Logan McNeill, who put the handle bars down from the outset and gave nothing else a look in. Hard to beat if he can find the front.
2 The Big Easy (Bet Now: $9.00) has a tricky draw to overcome but if they go silly in front, look for him to launch late. Resumes for the Maher/Eustace camp, having not raced since July 24 when at the end of his prep and looking for the paddock, producing a down the track effort at Caulfield. Has jumped out well. Just needs luck from the gate.
Race 9. (17:40) Measure Consulting Engr.-bm70 1000m
4 Little Stevie (Bet Now: $4.50) is in with a shout here. Did work out wide fresh at Caulfield and was entitled to knock up but she kept finding and in the end, was only beaten under a length by Vespertine. Simon Zahra has done a super job to date since going out on his own and this mare has good upside to come.
7 More (Bet Now: $5.00) is a progressive mare for the Price/Kent team that comes here off the back of a win at the midweeks at Mornington where she was given a peach by Jamie Kah, getting the split nearer the inside late and finishing best in a driving go. Harder here, but think she measures up.
2 Soul Obsession (Bet Now: $8.50) should be suited back to Mares grade. Strong on speed win fresh at the Valley before racing at Caulfield where she probably found them a bit sharp so want to be forgiving of that effort. Back to against her own sex, she can bounce back against these.
