Race One (11:45) : The Australian Hurdle 3400m:
Back Me: 1 Arch Fire (Bet Now: $3.60) goes on top for me in a cracking edition of the Australian Hurdle. He ran a game second to Gingerboy in the Galleywood at the Bool followed up by a handy seventh at Cranbourne behind Glorious Sinndar, who franked the form by winning the Andrew Ramsden. Has since trialled over the sticks at Cranbourne and looked very good I thought in beating Gingerboy. I’m confident he can turn the tables.
Big Danger: 3 Gingerboy (Bet Now: $1.50) looks the threat. The Galleywood winner went on to run a game fourth to star stablemate Raw Impulse over 2000m at Caulfield and did trial well behind Arch Fire. He has the form on the board and is the testing material.
Roughie: 2 King Of Dudes (Bet Now: $41.00) is probably the next best. He closed off okay in the Galleywood behind Gingerboy, though was beaten a long way. Doubt he can win, but he is one to include in exotics.
Race Two (12:15) : Samson Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: 1 Perpetual Crisis (Bet Now: $7.00) ran a game fifth during the Warrnambool Carnival before going to the Donald 2YO Classic and getting the job done there impressively. Drawn awkwardly and has topweight, but he is tough and loves a fight.
Big Danger: 2 Bringaroo (Bet Now: $4.20) resumed at Caulfield a fortnight back and was an alarming drifter in betting. That move was spot on as he could only manage fifth to the impressive winner and stablemate Blue Tycoon. Don’t think there is as much depth here, so he can improve for sure.
Roughie: 8 Ridgway (Bet Now: $4.40) creates plenty of interest. This first starter for Robbie Laing has looked the part in a couple of Cranbourne trials, and the times have been sharp. Stable knows when to get them right on debut, but the market will be the indicator.
Race Three (12:50) : Le Pine Funerals Plate (90) 2400m:
Back Me: The keg runners here come through the Raw Impulse race at Caulfield. Slight leaning towards the hard fit and consistent 5 Golden Mane (Bet Now: $6.00), who ran second in the race and was excellent in defeat. 2400 will be no issue and stable is flying.
Big Danger: 8 Spur On Gold (Bet Now: $6.00) won impressively at Flemington before contesting that Raw Impulse race, where he ran third and was game in defeat. The extra distance is right up his alley and does have a nice turn of foot.
Roughie: The one with upside is 7 Bajour (Bet Now: $10.00), who ran fifth in the race but was only second up. He only has upside, and the bigger track and up to 2400m are the two big factors that sway him to be a serious winning chance.
Race Four (13:30) : The Australian Steeplechase 3400m:
Back Me: 6 Angelology (Bet Now: $2.60) started odds on last week in a hurdle race at Ballarat where he looked to be bolting in the run, but couldn’t handle the toughness and the flat speed of Hucknall. That was his first run in nearly a month, so I’ll think he’ll take good improvement off that and looms as the likely threat to Arch Fire.
Big Danger: 1 Wells (Bet Now: $5.50) ran a credible fifth in the Galleywood behind Gingerboy before running fifth to Glorious Sinndar at Cranbourne in a race where the form has been franked. He looked to trial well recently at Cranbourne and he is the defending Grand National Champion. He will be better once he gets to that, but he can be dangerous here.
Roughie: The wet track brings a horse like 3 Stand To Gain (Bet Now: $34.00) in as a knockout chance. He is having a crack at the bigger jumps after failing in the Galleywood behind Gingerboy. Recent Cranbourne trial was encouraging and he is a swimmer who is getting fitter.
Race Five (14:10) : George Malone Memorial Plate (78) 1200m:
Back Me: 9 Caprese (Bet Now: $11.00) was a drifter in betting when racing over this track/distance a couple of weeks back but a well timed run saw the Team Corstens runner continue on his wonderful prep. Rises in weight, but senior rider steers and he will be strong late.
Roughie: 3 Armada (Bet Now: $7.00) ran over this track/distance at the midweeks a couple of weeks back and stuck on well without threatening behind Caprese. It’s been a while since he has won, and on his day he is a Stakes class horse. This is getting close to D-Day for him.
Roughie: 19 Reigning Meteor (Bet Now: $16.00) is a noted wet track who resumed on his home track at Warrnambool and worked home with purpose late behind Jungle Edge. Tumbles in weight, draws the right part of the track and he is a second up winner.
Race Six (14:50) : Le Pine Funerals Handicap 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Divine Mr Artie (Bet Now: $6.50) was a bad victim of the messy three year old race at Caulfield a fortnight behind Nat’s The Boss. He got badly held in the ruck when bolting and by the time he got clear, the race was over. Something similar happened first up and he went on to win. Same thing could happen here.
Big Danger: 1 Mr Individual (Bet Now: $6.00) resumed in a Stakes race at Morphettville and wasn’t too bad behind Faatinah, who went on to run well in the Goodwood, so the form reads well and his form from the Spring would spank this field if he brought it here.
Roughie: 14 Robert De Hero (Bet Now: $7.50) started short odds last time out in a Werribee maiden and the son of Von Costa De Hero lapped up the wet track, bolting in to win by nearly five lengths. He is a horse on the up and gets really good weight relief here.
Race Seven (15:29) : Ladbrokes Odd Boost Handicap (78) 1600m:
Back Me: 5 Francais (Bet Now: $12.00) has had a couple of runs now in Melbourne for Chris Waller, both of which at Caulfield and on both occasions she hasn’t had much luck, including the first run behind subsequent Group l winner Abbey Marie. Bigger track and long straight looks as though it will suit this daughter of Not A Single Doubt perfectly.
Big Danger: 8 Fife (Bet Now: $12.00) took on the older mares at this track/distance a tick over two weeks back and stuck to the task very well behind Holy Cow, who went on to run a cracker at Stakes level in Morphettville last Saturday. Back to her own age and sex now, so she should take some beating.
Roughie: 4 Mrs Cooper (Bet Now: $26.00) ran over this track/distance at the midweeks a couple of weeks ago where she sat on speed and fought on when third to Rezak. The key with this filly is that when she finds form, she holds it. Knockout hope at odds.
Race Eight (16:08) : Jim Conway Handicap 1600m:
Back Me: I was hoping 8 Lord Durante (Bet Now: $5.00) would go to the Valley next week, but he runs here and I’ll be happy to be with him. He was enormous in defeat last time out at Caulfield. Sat on a brutal speed and was the lone survivor there in a brave effort. Any sort of normal luck and he goes close here.
Big Danger: 2 Kenjorwood (Bet Now: $4.60) is having his first run for Darren Weir after having just the one run for Ciaron Maher, which ended with a bad failure behind Nevis. He has the Weir polish and is a class animal. Wouldn’t put anything beyond him.
Roughie: 8 Guest Of Honour (Bet Now: $9.50) raced a month back at Caulfield where he ground away strongly to run a close up fifth to Charmed Harmony. Hasn’t won in nearly a dozen Australian starts, but this is the easiest race he has contested in that time.
Race Nine (16:43) : Brown’s Sawdust & Shavings Handicap (84) 1400m:
Back Me: 6 Show A Star (Bet Now: $3.80) followed up his impressive fresh placing with a strong and gritty win at Caulfield a fortnight back in a really good effort. Not much harder here and he only has upside.
Big Danger: 7 Spreadeagled (Bet Now: $6.50) resumed over 1100m at Caulfield a fortnight back and closed off well late in the piece when fifth to Olivier. He has run well, and in fact won at Sandown previously, and second up at 1400m is ideal.
Roughie: 13 Niminypiminy (Bet Now: $8.00) is a handy mare who closed off well four weeks back at Caulfield in that Olivier race. 1100m isn’t her go, so the step up will be ideal and last time she was at 1400m, she was taking ground of Group l winners Amicus and Precious Gem in a Group ll. That should hold up here very nicely.
BEST BET: Race Eight Number 8 Lord Durante
NEXT BEST: Race Seven Number 5 Francais
VALUE: Race Five Number 9 Caprese
