Racing returns to Rosehill Gardens this Saturday where we see the return of some classy gallopers in the Expressway Stakes (1200m) while the two year olds start their charge towards the Golden Slipper in the Canonbury Stakes (1100m) and Widden Stakes (1100m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:40) : Canonbury Stakes 1100m:
Back Me: Keen on 2 Showtime (Bet Now: $5.00). This Team Hawkes youngster had one run, which came in the Spring at Randwick where he stuck on well when second to Luiza. He has been tuned up for his return to racing with a couple of trials under the belt, the latest coming here last Tuesday when winning and doing it comfortably. Excited to see how far he goes en route to perhaps the Blue Diamond/Slipper.
Big Danger: 1 Menari (Bet Now: $1.85) was the boom horse prior to debuting at Randwick a fortnight back where he had a charmed run behind the tempo and when Innes Jr asked for the effort, the son of Snitzel responded brilliantly and went on to win the race with a fair bit of ease, though not beating much I suspect. Has to step it up here, but he has the race fitness on his side and tactical speed, which at the Rosehill 1100m, is a big tick.
Long Shot: 3 Malahat (Bet Now: $9.50) is a well bred colt that resumes for Godolphin and John O’Shea. He debuted at Canterbury in the Spring where he was a drifter in the market and though the market was right, I thought he was game in defeat behind Teaspoon. Liked the way he trialled at Rosehill and should be expected to perform quite well here despite bigger fish to fry perhaps.
Race Two (13:20) : Widden Stakes 1100m:
Back Me: 4 Milanese Girl (Bet Now: $6.50) for me here. She resumes for Chris Waller after debuting at Canterbury in the Spring when sitting behind the tempo and chasing hard all the way but couldn’t quite reel in Teaspoon. Liked her trial here last week and she does meet the winner better at the weights here, plus looks to have more to offer.
Big Danger: 1 Teaspoon (Bet Now: $6.50) is a well bred filly who was a drifter in that race mentioned above but despite the flucs, she led all the way and showed good fight for an early two year old when challenged late. Tipped out and looks to have returned in really good order based on her trial at Warwick Farm on Monday when going about her business quite nicely. Hard to beat.
Long Shot: 8 Mystic Empire (Bet Now: $16.00) is a handy looking filly for the Waterhouse/Bott team who is first up here. She debuted in the Gimcrack and though never a winning threat, she was far from disgraced behind the above average Godolphin filly Jorda. Looked to trial well in winning that respective heat at Randwick, and ran time. Interesting to see how she fares against this lot.
Race Three (13:55) : Schweppes Handicap (90) 1500m:
Back Me: 4 Dylan’s Rojo (Bet Now: $4.60) was three weeks between runs when racing over 1400m at Randwick a fortnight back where he attempted to lead all the way and to his credit he gave a really good kick and fought on well when third to Careless. Rosehill 1500m looks ideal and he is the sole leader, so he should get a soft time of it.
Big Danger: 2 Invinzabeel (Bet Now: $4.00) was a really good performer during the Spring before being tipped out. He looked to trial well but his two runs this time in have been just awful, but perhaps he has been bottomed out by the big weights he has had to carry. Gets weight relief here and third up at the 1500m on his home track, this is D-Day for him.
Long Shot: 1 Dances On Stars (Bet Now: $15.00) can be hard to trust but on his best form he is right in this. Hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing over 1550m at Canterbury where he got back in the ruck and just stayed there behind Loyalty Man. Races well on his home track, not much depth here and gets Corey Brown steering.
Race Four (14:30) : TAB Highway Plate (Class 3) 1500m:
Back Me: 10 Circle Game (Bet Now: $11.00) was really good in defeat two back in a Highway at this track/distance before going the Randwick mile where I was quite keen on her chances but she let me down badly behind Via Napoli, who has franked the form, so that does read okay, and back to the Highway grade suits her perfectly.
Long Shot: 15 Dalmatia Prince (Bet Now: $5.00) resumed in the Highway at Canterbury several weeks back where he was specked at a longer price and that support was somewhat justified as he made up nice ground to run fourth to Atom Eve, beaten 2.5L. Much better suited here on the bigger track I suspect and up to 1500m looks ideal, plus the trial since was good to the eye.
Big Danger: 4 Louis’ Choice (Bet Now: $41.00) strung together a couple of impressive wins on the South Coast before racing on Moruya Cup Day last Monday where he got back in the run and was off the bit but picked up late and was strong to the line when second to Direct Strategy. 1500m here looks ideal and stable knows what it takes to win these Highway races.
Race Five (15:05) : TAB Handicap (72) 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Echo Effect (Bet Now: $3.60) was huge in defeat when resuming at Randwick given he was three/four wide no cover for the trip and though he looked gone 250m out, he surged again and was finishing his race off strongly to run a close up second to the hard fit/in form filly Improvement. Looks ready for the 1400m here and a repeat effort of the fresh run here should see her take some beating.
Big Danger: 7 Australiana (Bet Now: $3.70) created a big impression when debuting at Beaumont-Newcastle on Boxing Day, defying a betting drift to go on and absolutely spank his rivals by a space and ran sizzling time. Trialled nine days later at Randwick and looked good behind High Midnight. Should press forward here and take some stopping, especially if he repeats the debut run.
Long Shot: 10 Royal Navy (Bet Now: $14.00) was very disappointing when resuming over 1400m here on January before racing in a maiden over 1400m at Kembla where he was given a 12/10 steer from Mitchell Bell and the horse aided that ride with a lovely final 200m to win. He’ll eat up the 1400m here and has upside left for sure.
Race Six (15:40) : Expressway Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: Won’t hear of 1 Music Magnate (Bet Now: $1.85) getting beat here. If there is an up and coming horse who could join Winx as the star of the Autumn it is this horse. High class gelding that has been given a really good break since the Brisbane Winter Carnival, highlighted by a brilliant effort in the Doomben 10000. Trials have been out of this world, most notably the second trial last week where he won like a high class animal, running sizzling time and defeating Winx. Best bet of the weekend.
Big Danger: 5 Handfast (Bet Now: $8.00) is a talented four year old gelding that resumes for Godolphin and John O’Shea. He ran three times during the Spring, all three in strong races, and while he didn’t win he was more than satisfactory. Trials leading in have been pretty good to to the eye and he does have good fresh record.
Long Shot: 4 Big Money (Bet Now: $11.00) is a grand campaigner whose best years are probably behind more so than in front but the small will aid his claims. Hasn’t raced since the Canterbury Classic when getting back in the run and weaving his way through before briefly being a winning threat. But he just died on the run when fifth to Le Cordon Bleu. Bowman jumps on, good draw, small field…doubt he will win, but a definite place chance.
Race Seven (16:20) : Sunblest Cleaning Services Handicap (85) 2000m:
Back Me: 6 Regal Monarch (Bet Now: $41.00) for me at a price. This former UK stayer had his first run for Chris Waller over the mile at Randwick a fortnight back where it was suited for those nearer the tempo and for a stayer who is better at 2000m+, he had no hope. Gets to that trip now second up, and this is a very weak race, so with natural upside, I’ll take the gamble.
Big Danger: 3 Vassal (Bet Now: $7.00) has been given a month freshen up since racing over 1800m here where he had a nice sit just off the speed and presented at the right time but he couldn’t finish it off when fourth to Embley, who has run well since. Looked to trial alright last week here behind Galaxy Warrior, and 2000m is his pet trip.
Long Shot: 4 Sewreel (Bet Now: $5.50) had her first Australian run for Bjorn Baker in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford and did a good job in defeat behind stablemate Imposing Lass given that mare made it a real sit/sprint affair and for Sewreel, she doesn’t have that turn of foot. Much better placed here at 2000m I think and has the class factor.
Race Eight (17:00) : #theraces Handicap (85) 1100m:
Back Me: 4 Badajoz (Bet Now: $3.10) did a remarkable job to win fresh at Randwick over 1100m given he was wide no cover most of the trip an he was first up off a decent break, so nobody would have been angry had he dropped out, but he cruised to the front and though out of tickets the final few strides, Doyle lifted him to win. There is the query that he may race flat off a gut buster, but I am prepared to take the gamble.
Big Danger: 5 Scarlet Rain (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented filly that resumes for the Waterhouse/Bott team. She has been given a really good break since the Autumn where she was undefeated leading up to the Slipper where she didn’t see out the hectic 1200m. All three trials leading in have been very good, and the Rosehill 1100m start will be ideal for her racing pattern of rolling along on speed.
Long Shot: 11 Zara Bay (Bet Now: $15.00) is a well bred mare who resumes for Team Hawkes. She ran three times during the Melbourne Spring, highlighted by a win at Caulfield before two okay efforts in Stakes grade. Hasn’t trialled in Sydney, but I think she has had a jump out at Flemington. Goes well fresh and has the right form lines.
Race Nine (17:40) : Tab.com.au Handicap (76) 1350m:
Back Me: 2 Lady Jivago (Bet Now: $15.00) is a mare racing really well at the moment for the Jeff Englebrecht yard but just needs the win on the board to make it count for something. She ran over 1200m on Gosford Cup Day last time out and was very good against the track bias when fourth to the in form galloper Waitandwatch. Previous three runs were here and all three runs were very good, in stronger races. Keen on her each way.
Big Danger: 3 Your Way (Bet Now: $10.00) is a progressive mare that is low flying this time in for the Bjorn Baker yard. She has won two from two this time in, the latest coming at Canterbury over 1250m when defying a market drift and 60.5kg to get the job done. Looks the right time to tackle Saturday grade and she strikes a very winnable race.
Long Shot: 5 Chandana (Bet Now: $15.00) is the clear watch horse for mine here. Talented mare that resumes for Chris Waller after a Winter prep where she was touted as a possible Oaks contender in Queensland but was tipped out after a below par effort in the Roses. Trials leading up to her return have been strong, the latest coming at here last Tuesday. Market watch for sure.
