28/8/2021 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Caulfield, Memsie Stakes day

Group l racing returns to Melbourne this Saturday where it is Memsie Stakes Day at Caulfield. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

2 Bedford (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) on top for me. Team Freedman galloper that is several weeks between runs since racing at the Valley, where he was back off the speed and chased strongly, just missing out on picking up Mahamedeis. Prior runs suggested a win was close and hopefully can hold a forward spot from the draw.

1 Mahamedeis (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up for Nick Ryan after racing over 2040m last Saturday at the Valley in what was such a brutally run affair. He did a good job to stick on like he did when fourth to Pancho. Has done well on the back up before and up in trip, he’s hard to beat.

6 Prince Ziggy (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) is one I can entertain as a first four threat. Was a few weeks between runs when racing last Saturday at the Valley and I don’t think he disgraced himself at all behind an in form Smokin’ Romans. Have to go back to 2019 to when he last backed, which saw him ran fourth in the Yarra Valley Cup. Not sure he wins, but a first four contender.

3 Destination (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained gelding that bounced back into winning form with a strong on speed win at Randwick three weeks ago. He was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure and was too good. Bit more depth here, but now he has found winning form, he could go on with it.

13 Dirty Thoughts (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for the Ellerton/Zahra camp that should take beating here. Sat on speed at this track/distance two weeks back and tried her heart out. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Second Slip. Honest and should be around the mark again.

9 He’s A Balter (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) deserves respect for the very much astute Will Clarken stable. He is a month between runs since lapping up heavy ground at Morphettville and gave them an absolute spanking. Harder here and on dry ground, but have to respect the stable when they bring them over.

Tricky race but leaning towards 3 Lunakorn (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) for Team Freedman. This mare had a mixed Autumn campaign, which ended with a luckless effort in the Queen Of The South during the Adelaide Carnival when badly held up. Trialled well at Cranbourne and from gate one, if she can hold a box seat run, she’ll take holding out.

7 Turaath (Bet Now: $1.90 TOP ODDS) is a Maddie Raymond trained mare that is doing a super job this time in and no reason why she can’t win again. Sustained speed from the front saw her bolt up at Flemington three weeks ago and it was one of the better wins of the meeting given the work she did and how strong she was late. Hard to beat again.

8 Galgani (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is a Nikki Burke trained mare that is racing really well at the moment. Sat on speed over 1400m at Flemington several weeks ago and fought on strongly, only pipped late by Chassis in a blanket finish. Comes here with fresh legs, has the right racing pattern and is a first four threat.

1 Artorius (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) has the class factor on his side and that gets him home IMO. High quality three year old for Team Freedman that resumes, having not raced since the Slipper where he looked drunk around the track but was excellent late. Good jumpout to get ready and if he produces what he did as a juvenile, he’ll take beating.

8 Bruckner (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a Maher/Eustace colt that comes here as a last start maiden winner at Kembla but the win had plenty of merit to it. Market wanted to be with him, the overall time was good and the form I think will hold up. Tick over trial was a nice piece of work and he commands respect.

5 Mr Mozart (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) should be suited up in trip for Team Hawkes. Race shape was against him in the Vain but liked the way he picked up late and was solid to the line and through it behind Ingratiating. Tempo should be more genuine this time around and an improved showing is on the cards.

Great to see 1 Masked Crusader (Bet Now: $1.80) at the races. An Everest path kicks off here for this Team Hawkes trained galloper. He mixed it with the big boys in the Autumn and did measure up, winning the William Reid before a brilliant second in the TJ Smith. He then went to the All Aged and was flat, spelled soon after. 1100m is short of his best, but he has class.

8 Spaceboy (Bet Now: $11.00) is flying this time in without winning for Gary Portelli. Narrow second at Flemington fresh before going to Randwick where he led and looked home, but was nabbed late by Valaquenta. He should find a lovely spot from the gate and won’t mind a drop of rain.

4 Oxley Road (Bet Now: $7.50) is a talented four year old for Peter Moody that resumed several weeks ago down the straight at Flemington and for a few strides looked the winner, but couldn’t quite see it through when second to Miss Albania. He’ll take good improvement from that and back on a bending track, he appeals.

1 Probabeel (Bet Now: $2.00) has class and that will carry her a long way here. Jamie Richards trained mare that resumes against her own age/sex after originally set down to resume in the Memsie. Couple of slight set backs have changed her path, but she is fine from all reports now and if she’s fine, she’s too good for these.

2 Instant Celebrity (Bet Now: $4.40) is a high quality mare for Phillip Stokes that resumes. Hasn’t raced since the Adelaide Carnival, where the obvious highlight was clearly the Sangster win at Group l level before a game second in the Goodwood. Should get a lovely run in transit and like racing here. Key threat to Probabeel.

9 Parlophone (Bet Now: $11.00) is racing really well at the moment for the Price/Kent team. Ran over 1100m here last time out against the Mares when wide no cover for the trip yet kept coming, just missing out on picking up Bella Nipotina. More economical run this time around, she’ll be dangerous.

Well this race will tell us one way or another if 7 Ziegfeld (Bet Now: $4.80) is a contender or pretender. Couldn’t have been ridden better by J Mac at Kembla last start over 2000m but was run down late by Laure Me In. Either he didn’t run the 2000m out and wins back to 1700m here, or he’s a milk drinker.

The unknown is 2 Angel Of Truth (Bet Now: $5.50). Not many expected him to run as well as he did first up in the PB Lawrence but he was a real eye catcher from off the speed in running second to Sierra Sue. If he naturally improves off the resumption, he’ll take beating here I’d suggest.

9 Tralee Rose (Bet Now: $6.00) kicks off a potential Melbourne Cup path. Symon Wilde trained mare that hasn’t raced since the Adelaide Cup where she looked a good thing on paper but let punters down with a plain effort. Showed her staying prowess via the Bagot/Lord Reims, so she has that under the belt. Just depends if she’s ready to go first up.

I’ll take a chance with 11 Inspirational Girl (Bet Now: $8.00), a former classy WA mare that makes her debut for Danny O’Brien. This girl brings with her from WA some very strong and impressive form, her last run being in the Group l Kingston Town when beaten a lip by Truly Great. Looked to move very well in a Geelong jumpout and hopefully the gate is used to advantage.

10 Tofane (Bet Now: $3.10) looks the most obvious. Gun mare for Michael Moroney that last raced in the Tatts Tiara when winning at Group l level at Eagle Farm and was dominant. Had a jumpout down the straight at Flemington and went about her business very nicely. Lands in a plum spot from the draw and is hard to beat.

1 Fifty Stars (Bet Now: $26.00) is a very interesting runner. Now finds himself with Tom Dabernig at Warrnambool and we know he has the class to take this out if he’s ready to go. Not sure he will be but the recent jumpout was encouraging and if they do overdo it in front, he’ll be strong late.

3 Frosty Rocks (Bet Now: $9.50) looks to have control from the front and from the good draw with Craig Williams steering, I dare say that is the scenario he’ll get here and hard fit, he’ll take beating. What has impressed about me about both starts/wins this prep is the way he has dug in to get the wins because he has been challenged but has found when required. Lands in front and will be hard to get past.

Have to give respect to 11 Ayrton (Bet Now: $1.75). High quality four year old for the Price/Kent team that resumes after a mixed Autumn/Winter prep. Narrow second to Apache Chase in the Fred Best, which ensured he missed out on a Stradbroke berth, but made amends with a spank job in the Gunsynd. Looked to jump out well for his return and is well and truly proven here with some decent figures on the board.

6 Secret Blaze (Bet Now: $18.00) is flying for the McEvoy camp. Good late splits fresh in the Bletchingly and proved that was no fluke in the Aurie’s Star when hitting the line with purpose late behind The Astrologist. Now he gets a rise in trip and third up, he should be at peak fitness.
