A strong nine race card has been assembled for Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out a metre for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:42) Tab Hcp 1200m
4 Neutron (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Starcraft colt for Kacy Fogden that is on debut. This youngster has had two trials in readiness for start one, the latest seeing him bolt up over 1000m at the Gold Coast on Monday and loved the way he went about his business in winning. Looks above average and shocked if he didn’t run well here.
6 Snappy Reply (Bet Now: $2.60) looks above average for Tony Gollan who was heavily backed when debuting over 1000m at the Sunny Coast when leading throughout and she gave her rivals a proper spanking in winning, running good time as well. Don’t see 1200m being an issue for her and she’s got the right racing pattern.
Want to give 10 Minjee (Bet Now: $7.00) another chance. Was Winx like odds when debuting here at the midweeks on wet ground and despite sitting wide no cover for the trip, she was most disappointing in the straight. Think back on top of the ground will clearly suit her better and off the way she trialled, can’t ignore her off one run.
Race 2. (13:22) Millers Swim School (bm70) 2200m
This is a bludger of a race, but if he’s each way odds, could easily back 1 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $8.50). Was keen on him running well last Saturday at Eagle Farm and on face value, he was ordinary behind Brocson, but that track was horrendous so want to be very forgiving. Back to Doomben and with the claim for Keal, he’ll do me.
6 Populist (Bet Now: $5.00) is the one with winning form next to his name. Contested a somewhat weak 2200m contest at the Sunny Coast where Cormack seized the initiative to take the front and from there, he controlled things and gave nothing else a look in. Harder here, but has winning form, lands near the speed and is hard to run down.
4 Royal Atom (Bet Now: $9.50) is a little while between wins for Darryl Hansen but is racing okay and can run a race here at odds. Had specking at odds last Saturday at Eagle Farm when near the speed throughout and battled away well in defeat behind the in form Brocson. Form around him doesn’t read too bad and this is a winnable race.
Race 3. (14:02) Mount Franklin Hcp 2200m
3 Mawaany Machine (Bet Now: $9.50) should love the rise to 2200m and despite the stable having troubled times in Queensland, I think this stayer can run well up in trip. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1800m at Eagle Farm when attempting to lead all the way and he gave a really good kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when outgunned late by The Kingdom. He’s likeable here.
4 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $7.50) who should be well suited up to 2200m. Ran over 1800m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago when back in the run in a fast run event and was never really a winning factor but did work home well late. Can sit much closer in the run from the inside gate and the depth is nowhere near as strong.
1 Mr Garcia (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to be ticking along nicely. Comes through that 1800m Gold Coast race mentioned above won by Magnufighter and was a real eye catcher from the back when a fast finishing fourth. Should hold a forward spot from the inside gate and Larry Cassidy is riding in super form at the moment.
Race 4. (14:42) Lexus (bm70) 1600m
12 Monaco Snob (Bet Now: $19.00) each way for me. Resumed over 1350m last Wednesday here where he was restrained from the wide gate to back near last in the run and while he was never really a winning factor, his finale wasn’t too bad. Would love them to take advantage of the gate and while his second up record reads bad, he has contested much, much stronger races than this.
3 Le Dude (Bet Now: $18.00) is knocking on the door to win one. Ran over the mile at the Sunny Coast last start when back in the run and spotted them a decent start but loved the way he found the line late when third to Lucky Jackson. He gets a great chance here I feel. Just hoping he doesn’t get too far back in the run.
1 Downloading (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing in good form for Rob Heathcoate. Ran over this track/distance last Wednesday when given every chance by Adin Thompson and tried hard when beaten narrowly by Arterial. Tends to save his best for Doomben and this race does look similar to what he faced last time. Hard to beat.
Race 5. (15:22) Xxxx Dry Plate (c6) 1050m
6 Royal Witness (Bet Now: $2.10) has the A1 form to win this. Comes through the feature sprint race during the Canberra Carnival where he had the dream sit behind the speed and loomed large to win but just lacked the toughness to outgun Handle The Truth. That looks super form for this, has race fitness…hard to beat for sure.
13 Pizonie (Bet Now: $8.00) is hit and miss for Tony Gollan but his best is good enough to be around the mark. Several weeks between runs since racing at Eagle Farm over 1000m where he got back and didn’t really fire a shot behind Boom Chicka Boom. The speed looks hot in front here, so he’ll get his chance to finish over the top.
12 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Barry Lockwood trained gelding that can run a race here at odds. Copped way too much pressure on speed here last Wednesday when on speed in a four way battle for the lead and was entitled to drop out and run last, but stuck on and was sound in defeat. Looks the leader and will give a sight I’m sure.
Race 6. (16:02) Chandon F(bm78) 1350m
Would say I’d love to see 7 Red Stina (Bet Now: $6.00) at Eagle Farm, but given how poorly that track is going at the moment, Doomben it is for this mare. Resumed over 1200m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and gee she was a real eye catcher late in the piece despite being beaten around 5.5L. She’s flying this girl and certainly can win. Just want to see her sit a pair or two closer in the run.
5 Seentoomany (Bet Now: $6.00) is a key chance. Put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce, including one under the lights at Canterbury, before racing at the Gold Coast two weeks ago when working home late when fourth to the in form Peppi La Few. She’ll come on from that and back to Mares grade, she should take some beating.
12 Joymaker (Bet Now: $9.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but I reckon Kelly Schweida has this mare going well this prep. Trialled well prior to resuming over 1300m a few weeks ago and really liked the way she finished her race off when second to Fortification. Loomed to win but being first up, just ran out of condition late. Fitter and up to 1350m, she’s really likeable.
Race 7. (16:42) Kirin (rs0mw) 1200m
4 Ditmas (Bet Now: $9.50) looks a real improver here for Mel Eggleston. Comes through the Usmanov race from two weeks back at the Gold Coast where he just got too far back in the run but was an eye catcher late behind Usmanova, beaten just over three lengths. He can sit on speed if need be and I think if he’s going to win, that needs to happen.
13 Heritage Sash (Bet Now: $3.80) looks ready for Saturday metro level. Comes to town in winning form after giving them a spanking at the Gold Coast three weeks ago. Admittedly he got a soft time of it on speed, but still had to put them away and he did so impressively. Has run well in town, but he looks a better horse this time in and confident he measures up.
Third up from a break, 8 All Pluck (Bet Now: $23.00) should just about be ready re fitness. Ran over 1200m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago on a testing track and couldn’t really fire a shot from off the pace behind Motion Granted. Think firmer footing is his go in life, which he gets here, and is a two time winner at Doomben. Knockout chance.
Race 8. (17:18) Ascot Childcare & Kindy (bm78) 1350m
Fitter and up to 1350m look two big ticks for the Kelly Schweida trained 16 Magic Fox (Bet Now: $5.00). Resumed over 1200m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and really liked the way he finished his race off from the back when third to Motion Granted, with his condition just giving way late. Has to be rated as one of the leading chances with natural improvement.
8 Fortification (Bet Now: $12.00) is flying for Team Edmonds. Loved the way he trialled leading into his resumption at Eagle Farm when an eye catcher late behind Stampe. Then raced there again, sat off a good speed and launched late to get the job done under a lovely steer from Larry Cassidy. Has upside and for mine has to be respected.
17 Keep On Loving You (Bet Now: $21.00) hasn’t done much wrong this time in for Paul Nolan Jnr. Put together a couple of wins on the bounce at Toowoomba before going to the Gold Coast two weeks ago where he wasn’t entirely happy on the shifty circuit but was far from disgraced when fifth to Motion Granted. Back on firmer footing, he can win.
Race 9. (18:00) Nuturf Hcp 1350m
7 Command’N’Conquer… (Bet Now: $2.20) just how good is he? Thought it was a solid maiden win on debut at Toowoomba. Then raced over this track/distance last Wednesday when doing work in the run yet he was just far too good for them and won well. Time was very sharp relative to the day. If that hasn’t busted him, he’ll be hard to beat here.
3 Ballistic Boy (Bet Now: $6.50) has been pretty good in two runs back from a break for Chris Anderson. Just looked in need of the run first up behind Naval Strike before racing at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago when wide throughout but he kept finding under Jimmy Orman and showed good ticker to win. Back to 1350m is fine for him and has a touch of class.
6 Vanna Girl (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Team Edmonds trained filly that has been freshened up, having not raced since Feb 8 over the mile at Eagle Farm when continuing her winning ways and stamping herself as a legitimate local chance for the Oaks. Tick over trial at the Gold Coast on Monday was good and she’ll be strong late I’m sure.
