Morphettville will back up for its third meeting this week on Saturday, with eight races set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out twelve metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out eight metres for the remainder.

Race 1. (13:26) Furphy 2YO Plate 1050m
Leaning the way of 4 Jyoti (Bet Now: $2.80), a daughter of Akeed Mofeed for the McEvoy camp that is having start one. This filly trialled a couple of weeks back on the Parks track where she was on speed under Tourneur and looked to move very well, winning the trial narrowly but had plenty in hand it seemed. Think she’s one of the leading chances in a tricky race.
2 Champagne Affair (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Gordon Richards trained daughter of Rubick on debut. She had a jumpout here on December 17 when on speed but wobbled a touch on the turn and the rider didn’t push her out after that point. Looked a nice type and the time was solid enough relative to the morning, so keen to see how she goes.
3 Exalted Joy (Bet Now: $9.00) is a most interesting runner. She’s by Valentia and I can’t recall too many of the progeny stepping out to the races. This filly ran in a 900m jumpout at Strathalbyn and really liked the way she went about her business nearer the inside, winning the jumpout in okay time and had something in hand. Watch the market with her.
Race 2. (14:06) Adelaide Cup, March 9 2020 Hcp 1538m
3 The Pugilist (Bet Now: $2.70) looks one of the safer options here. The McEvoy stable trains this son of Fighting Sun, who ran over 1400m on the Parks track three weeks ago where he was pretty good in defeat but clearly no match for the impressive performance from an in form Cazabillie. Off that, I reckon up in trip suits and the depth here is nowhere near as strong.
4 Sodalite (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Shea Eden trained filly who comes over to SA in winning form after breaking the maiden tag at Sandown last time, largely helped by a lovely steer just off the pace by Dwayne Dunn. Form around her is a tad suspect, but she does find a very winnable race here and stable don’t send them over for a holiday.
6 Jack’s A Cracker (Bet Now: $10.00) could be a sneaky chance at big odds. He ran over 1200m here on Monday and was very one paced, but stuck to the task pretty well in defeat, beaten a couple of lengths. Like him up to 1500m and only has to carry 51kg after the claim for Sophie Logan. Think he’s a must include in exotics.
Race 3. (14:46) Fleurieu Milk Company Hcp 1600m
Going with the noted front running bulldog 4 Borris In Ossory (Bet Now: $4.20) for Grant Young, who is two weeks between runs after racing at this track/distance when leading at a good clip and giving a good kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Enki. Like him here, he should lead and give them something to chase.
1 Debt Collector (Bet Now: $2.50) can bounce back here for sure. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago and if you were on, it was a pretty ugly watch. Just got too far back and never really got involved behind Enki under what I thought was a very negative ride. I think with some positive initiative, he can improve big time and win.
Third up from a break, 7 Roselli Sting (Bet Now: $13.00) should just about be at peak fitness. Gordon Richards trains this gelding, who comes through the Naseeb race from a fortnight ago where he was held up for a few strides, but at the same time, he had his chance and didn’t finish off well enough. Stable is flying and he is getting some busted horses to run rippers.
Race 4. (15:26) AAMI Handicap 1050m
Really keen to see 5 Autumn Splendour (Bet Now: $3.00) resume for the Phillip Stokes team. This three year old has had two career outings to date, both during the Autumn when placing on debut behind Magic Phantom before contesting a maiden and the arrogance of the win was very impressive. Immediately spelled and his trial on the Parks track was one of the better trials I’ve seen for a while.
4 Iscariot (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Zebedee for Will Clarken that is first up and am very intrigued to see how he goes. Had three runs in the first prep, with the lone win coming on debut. There was whispers between start one and start two that he was on his way to Hong Kong but something happened and he remains with Clarken. Recent jumpout was decent enough so watch the market.
I don’t think 7 Magic Dee (Bet Now: $13.00) beats these but she tries hard and I’m sure she’ll run her usual honest race. Broke the maiden status two back at Murray Bridge before racing here two weeks ago when on speed and battling away really well in defeat behind the well performed Hearty Lass. She’ll try hard…not sure she wins, but one for multiples for sure.
Race 5. (16:06) TAB Handicap 1200m
Big watch on 8 Star Of Monsoon (Bet Now: $5.50), a former Gerald Ryan runner that is having his first run for the Grant Young team. When racing in Sydney, he threatened to be a Saturday class horse, but at times, he was hit and miss and didn’t really fulfill his potential. Now with Young, I was really taken by his recent Strathalbyn jumpout. He was trucking. Goes well fresh too so I’ll take a chance on him.
Can 6 Kabini (Bet Now: $6.00) go on with it? There was early specking for her when she resumed over 1100m here two weeks ago before being a late drifter. She got the speed on in front and once presented wider on the turn, unleashed a brilliant turn of foot to overhaul them and win. Good second up record and now she’s won, she can go on with it.
5 Street Life (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing in career best form for Karen Byrnes. Loved the way he let down to win two back at Gawler before going to Moonee Valley where he was excellent in defeat I thought when fifth to Never Again. Returns back home and does tend to save his best for this track, and with weight relief, he’ll do me.
Race 6. (16:46) Schweppes Handicap 1200m
Fitter and up to 1200m are two big ticks for 3 Fancy Rumble (Bet Now: $5.00), who ran last Saturday at Gawler (Metro) where she just got too far back in the run and didn’t come on well enough, but the last little bit she did close off, looking like a horse that wants further, which she gets immediately, and she finds a much weaker race compared to last Saturday.
7 Counter Drive (Bet Now: $2.70) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but gee he’s such an honest type and rarely runs a bad race. Ran over 1050m here last time out where he found them a bit sharp but was good late when third to Atomic Lokade, who swooped down the outside. Up to 1200m, hard fit, he’s a leading chance.
9 Kenyan Wonder (Bet Now: $5.50) is a very hard horse to find and trust, but she’s teasing. Want to be forgiving of her run three weeks ago on the Parks track behind Enough Swagger because I think she just got too far back and had too much to do. Back on the bigger track off a more genuine speed…her best is clearly good enough. Hasn’t showed it in a while.
Race 7. (17:26) Southern Speed Series Final (75) 2046m
14 Floriano (Bet Now: $31.00) is a Jake Stephens trained daughter of Fiorente that stepped up to 1800m here a few weeks ago, her first look at the trip for this prep, and worked home pretty well late in the piece when third to Final Hearing in what was an pace domination. She’s bred to eat up further, has upside and rates highly against these.
Very interested to see how 5 Tatalina (Bet Now: $2.60) goes for the McEvoy camp. Has had two starts for the stable for two wins. Impressive winner over the mile at Balaklava before stepping up to 2000m at Murray Bridge where she was asked to chase from a fair way out but was too good in the end. How much did that run take out of her? Time will only tell.
Have always had time for 11 Hasta La Fiorente (Bet Now: $35.00), so keen to see how he goes at this level. Found a lovely race last time out at Bordertown and under a good ride from an in form apprentice in Teagan Voorham, the son of Fiorente was too good, just. Tumbles down to 51kg and should get a soft run from the gate.
Race 8. (18:07) Winning Edge Presentations Hcp 1600m
I think the market will be the guide to the winning chances of 7 Allusion (Bet Now: $1.60). He had two runs during the the Spring, running a game race fresh at Murray Bridge before racing at this track/distance where he raced like Chautauqua. Disinterested and never in the mix at all in a shocking performance. Been given a break and his trial was decent enough. Market will tell you if he’s ready.
2 Master Chum (Bet Now: $5.00) is flying I feel for Rob Wilkinson. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m on the Parks track when making a sustained run from the back and sticking on very well in defeat behind an in form Cazabillie. Up to the mile I think suits and ideally for him, he’d love a drag up into the race.
5 Sornja (Bet Now: $26.00) is an improver here I feel. Former Queensland mare that had her first run in SA for David Tootell where she was well back off the pace and was never really in the mix at all behind Cazabilie, but it was an on pace dominated affair and she was first up over an unsuitable trip. May need one more run, but this is potentially a very weak race.
