Eight races will be run and won at Ascot this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:42) TABTOUCH PLATE 1400m
2 Sanabreanna (Bet Now: $1.85) is a talented filly for the David Harrison camp that had a break between runs before contesting the Lee Steere Classic three weeks ago when suited by the fast speed and finishing over the top to beat the above average Massimo near the line. Has the runs on the board and should take some beating against this lot.
1 Downforce (Bet Now: $6.50) is on the seven day back up for Neville Parnham after racing over 1200m here last Saturday where he was three weeks between runs and just lacked the dash to go with them late when third to Laverrod, who does have really good form next to his name, so respecting that here and up to 1400m I like in what looks a winnable race.
4 Special Beau (Bet Now: $17.00) is a son of Brazen Beau for the Williams stable that comes through the Lee Steere Classic where he was nearer the inside and held up at times, but at the same time, he had his chance to do something and was just fair. Not as much depth overall this time around and is in the right stable to improve big time.
Race 2. (16:22) AMELIA PARK PLATE 1100m
1 Prim And Proper (Bet Now: $2.25) has been off the scene for a fair while, but she does have class on these and I’m hoping that can get her home. Hasn’t raced since the Autumn when placing in the Gimcrack, which was a key lead up to the Karrakatta and that form just reads super, with eight winners coming from that race. Been given plenty of time off and her two trials leading in have been good.
Third up from a spell, 5 Snippy Miss (Bet Now: $3.60) should just about be ready fitness wise for the Adam Durrant camp. Needed the run first up behind We’ve Got Dreams before stepping up to 1100m and beating all bar Amelia Bedelia. Does get a 1kg weight swing on that horse here and has more upside. Is that strong enough form? Time will tell.
Nothing wrong with the way 4 Amelia Bedelia (Bet Now: $6.00) has gone about her business this time in, winning 2/2. Tough on speed win first up at Northam over 1000m before going to the race mentioned above where Snippy Miss strongly challenged her, but she was too good and held on. Looks the leader and will give a great sight.
Race 3. (17:02) CRAIG HOSIE BIRTHDAY HCP 1600m
6 Midnight Sky (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for Adam Durrant. Ran over the mile here three weeks ago where I thought Pike rode a 12/10 race on her, sitting her off a good speed, presenting her at the right time. She looked the winner, but was bloused near the peg by Arctic Stream. Has the 1600m run under the belt and scratched from the Starstruck last Saturday for this.
11 Son Of Bacchus (Bet Now: $3.00) is going super but he can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over this track/distance on December 18 where he had the peach run just off the speed and loomed to win but had to settle for another placing, this time behind Shuwish. With the scratchings, he finds such a winnable race and is hard to beat.
If 1 Lordhelpmerun (Bet Now: $17.00) brings his best, he bolts in. His form is just far superior to anything engaged here, but his recent efforts have been awful, largely brought on by himself by poor racing manners, the latest seeing him pull his head off when down the track behind Arctic Stream. Can the strong hands of Peter Hall bring out the best?
Race 4. (17:42) WESTERN RACEPIX HCP 1200m
10 This’ll Testya (Bet Now: $1.55) looks a rising star but she has to keep stepping up to the plate. Her two starts/wins to start her career have been stunning, the latest coming three weeks ago over 1100m here when bolting up and the ratings boys and girls think she can go on to better things. Has to keep winning to ensure that happens, and confident she will.
4 Dance Music (Bet Now: $6.00) has been a money muncher for punters this prep and personally, I couldn’t back her, but if she hasn’t burned holes in your pocket, I’d be backing her because she will get the perfect run off what could be a hot speed set by Wrinkly and This’ll Testya. Led and tired last Saturday but was a month between runs and up to 1200m suits.
1200m isn’t the A1 trip for 3 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $27.00) but he does have the Group form next to his name and does his best when leading and rolling. Hasn’t raced since tiring in the Scahill but like the booking of McNaught and if he jumps clean, he should lead the fav, run along at a strop clip and give them something to chase at odds.
Race 5. (18:20) D'ORSOGNA HANDICAP 1400m
1400m at Ascot for 1 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $18.00) with Troy Turner on is usually a good recipe for the veteran galloper so I’ll go with him each way in what looks a winnable race. His run last Thursday behind Flower Of War at Pinjarra was full of merit I thought given he was wide no cover on a good speed and was there to win 200m out but died on the run. Gets Turner on from an inside gate, I think he’ll run a beauty.
3 Mankind (Bet Now: $7.00) is on the seven day back up after racing at this track/distance last Saturday where he had the suck run behind the speed and while he was held up for a few strides, he was out in time when third to the very promising Not To Be Mist. The depth here is nowhere near as strong and the claim for Azzopardi certainly helps.
9 Blackwood River (Bet Now: $27.00) is a son of Blackfriars for the Stephen Miller team that resumes. This four year old hasn’t raced since September 14 at Belmont when leading at a good clip and tiring late behind the then flying Bunker Buster. Can pull out a decent run fresh and didn’t mind his trial behind State Attorney at Lark Hill.
Race 6. (18:55) QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP 1100m
2 Wanna Be Good (Bet Now: $10.00) has an awful racing pattern but if the breaks go his way, I think he can take this out. Ran over 1200m here back on November 20 where he was back near last in the run and finished off hard to just miss out on the win. He’ll likely get back to near last again, but if he was able to sit that touch closer in the run, he will take a power of beating.
8 State Attorney (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Haradasun gelding for Adam Durrant that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since July 6 when down the track over 1200m at Belmont. He is bred to be a good one but certainly hasn’t lived up to the early hype. In saying that, finds a winnable race here and has trialled well leading into his resumption.
Very interested to see how 9 Truth And Lies (Bet Now: $20.00) measures up. Luke Fernie trains this mare, and we know the stable, along Peter Fernie, are lethal when they come to town and rarely get it wrong with placing them at metro level. This mare has done her recent racing at Esperance Bay and was strong in winning over 1200m last time. Not sure how that form stacks up, but she’s in the right stable.
Race 7. (19:30) A.T.A. STAKES 2200m
Ross Price is doing a fab job with 3 Arctic Stream (Bet Now: $2.20) and I think he can continue his winning ways. Has won his past two, the latest coming last Saturday over 1800m here when ridden out the back before peeling wider and with clear momentum, was able to win. Suited up in trip and big tick for him is that Pike takes the ride.
7 Prince Turbo (Bet Now: $2.70)is flying for Jason Miller and is a leading chance here. Comes through the Towton Cup from last Wednesday where you could make a case that he should have beaten Taxagano given that horse drifter out under pressure, but in the end he was too good, just. Drops a fair bit in overall depth and is hard to beat.
5 Dark Musket (Bet Now: $26.00) is ticking along nicely towards the Perth Cup and this should top him off for it. Beat just two runners home in the Towton Cup but the tempo was against him and considering the winner ran sub 35 for the final 600m, Dark Musket was always going to struggle. If this becomes a staying contest, he comes into play.
Race 8. (20:05) CROWN PERTH HCP 1800m
3 Arnie’s Boy (Bet Now: $8.50) will do me in the get out for the Ashley Maley team. On the seven day back up after racing over 1600m here last Saturday where he really had no chance due to the slow tempo but kept coming in a pretty game effort behind Perceptive Miss. Think he’s looking for more ground, so like him up to 1800m and should prove hard to hold out.
13 Zip Your Lips (Bet Now: $15.00) is a lightly raced son of Toorak Toff for Adam Durrant but he does find a very winnable Saturday metro race. Ran over 1400m in a Bunbury maiden last time and took a while to get into his work but really liked the last bit of his race as he put them away and was impressive. Suited up in trip. Just depends where he gets to from gate one.
Back up in trip looks a good set up for 9 Sharpbob (Bet Now: $15.00), who was pretty good at this track/distance two back behind the in form Prince Turbo. Then came back to the mile and was just far too keen on speed when down the track behind Shuwish. Back up to 1800m, should lead this field and hopefully is allowed to roll along on speed.
