Sydney racing returns to Randwick on Saturday for a strong nine race card where it is McKell Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (11:10) : Seven News Plate 1400m:
Back Me: 13 African Rainbow (Bet Now: $14.00) looks just about a good thing here. Talented filly for Bjorn Baker who resumed in the Woodlands during the Scone Carnival where she sat near last in a leader dominated affair but finished off strongly when a close up fifth to Debonairly. Up to 1400m looks perfect, she has the form on the board and fresh legs.
Big Danger: 8 Easy Go Easy Win (Bet Now: $4.20) hasn’t raced for over three weeks since racing at the midweeks at Warwick Farm where he was quite safe in the market and after a nice sit back off the pace, he chased hard and nearly looked the winner but had to settle for second to Barbeque, who failed last week. Form is suspect, but this horse is a likely type.
Long Shot: 6 Allied Power (Bet Now: $14.00) had been a bit of an enigma for a while but he somewhat put that behind him last time out at Gosford where he sat back in a fast run race and finished off powerfully out wide despite wanting to lay in. Form out of that has held up and now that he has the win on the board, he can go on with it.
Race Two (11:45) : Tony Sleiman Memorial TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1100m:
Back Me: 9 Suncraze (Bet Now: $2.90) is a horse I have a lot of time for and at his best, he blows these away. Resumed on Scone Cup Day and he can be horrible out of the gates, but he jumped well but due to the wide gate, he was hooked back and then had to come out widest at the top of the straight, and that cost him the win as the winner hugged the rail and got all the runs. Confident he can measure up.
Big Danger: 7 L’Elu (Bet Now: $9.50) is a talented filly for Rod Northam who resumed on her home track on Scone Cup Day where she had a nice sit off the tempo and got the split, looming to win, but her condition just gave out late behind Sisken. Run prior in the Country Championship Qualifier was outstanding, and that does look very good form for this.
Long Shot: 4 Somebody (Bet Now: $14.00) is a really good mare that resumes for the Ryan yard. She ran twice last time in, bolting up first up at Dubbo before going to a Rosehill Highway where nothing really went right for her. Trials leading up to her return have been outstanding and I’m keen to see what she does here.
Race Three (12:25) : EML Handicap (78) 2000m:
Back Me: 3 Obscura (Bet Now: $13.00) rises a bit in depth/grade but he is a progressive stayer for Godolphin and Darren Beadman. He ran last start over 2000m at Kembla Grange where he sat near the tempo and looked to travel sweetly before Penza asked for the effort and the horse found to score a narrow but impressive win. He has ticked the 2000m box, something most of these haven’t.
Big Danger: 12 Cross Stitch (Bet Now: $9.50) had some market support when racing over 1800m at Rosehill where she did of work to get up near the speed with no weight on her back and tried hard but the early effort told when finishing fourth to stablemate Black On Gold. I think with a more patient steer, she will be more effective. Give her another chance.
Long Shot: 8 Monasterio (Bet Now: $12.00) could be the big improver here. He comes through the race won by Obscuria at Flemington and gee he was a major flop. Nearly odds on and after leading, he was the first horse beat and was a big disappointment. Trialled last week and was much better there. On his prior form, he’s right in this.
Race Four (13:05) : Mark Taylor Outreach Program Handicap (85) 1600m:
Back Me: 2 So Willie (Bet Now: $6.50) is a horse who has been great in three runs this time in. He won his first runs this prep in very good fashion before racing last Saturday over 1500m at Rosehill where he was hooked back from the wide gate and from that point on, was never a winning chance but he worked home with real purpose behind Invinzabeel. Up to the mile again is perfect and I always respect Waller horses on the quick turnaround.
Big Danger: 6 Supply And Demand (Bet Now: $3.80) is a quality galloper for the Waterhouse/Bott yard who drops a fair bit in depth after contesting the Scoen Cup last start where he sat just off a hot speed and that probably took the stuffing out of him behind Duca Valentinois. Loves racing at Randwick and this is a significant drop.
Long Shot: 10 Chandana (Bet Now: $5.50) can be a hot and cold mare for Chris Waller but she is a pretty good mare when she is on song. Blinkers went on two back and she bolted up before going to Rosehill where she got back and closed off okay then raced at Warwick Farm last Wednesday when finishing third behind Medallie. Randwick mile is ideal and she should take some beating.
Race Five (13:45) : Wilson Asset Management Handicap (72) 1400m:
Back Me: 1 Siren’s Fury (Bet Now: $6.00) is a quality filly for Jason Coyle who comes back to the 1400m after racing over 1800m at Rosehill three weeks back where she got back in the run and couldn’t quite run on well enough behind Black On Gold, but she did pull up with a dislodged tooth. Has a bit of class/quality and gets the claim.
Big Danger: 11 Seeblume (Bet Now: $15.00) had been teasing to win a race for a while but she finally did it last time out at Newcastle. Had a nice sit off the pace by Penza before being given clear air and despite taking a little while to wind up, she lengthened nicely and got the win. Trial since looked okay to the eye and she will be strong late.
Long Shot: 16 Chadana (Bet Now: $67.00) is a pretty good filly from Canberra who has built up a tidy record and could add some value into exotics here. Resumed on her home track over 1400m where she was a drifter in the market and while she didn’t win, I thought she ran well, closing off nicely late. Would have preferred her over further, but she carries no weight on her back and she’ll be strong late.
Race Six (14:20) : The Sporting Chance Golfers Handicap (78) 1200m:
Back Me: Siding with 10 Sisken (Bet Now: $4.80) in a very good race for the fairer sex. She has been three for three this time in, the latest coming on Scone Cup Day where she was ridden on speed by Tommy Berry and looked to travel sweetly in the run before being asked for the supreme effort and finding plenty. Back to 1200m looks perfect and she deserves a crack in town.
Big Danger: 12 In Times Of War (Bet Now: $3.80) is a talented filly for the Chris Waller who has been excellent in three runs back from a break but just hasn’t quite been able to greet the judge. 12/10 ride by Avdulla three weeks back at Rosehill but just no match for the classy mare Bonny O’Reilly. 1200m is a risk, but with a cold ride and a cuddle, I think she can get it.
Long Shot: 6 Magic Of Dreams (Bet Now: $14.00) is a well performed mare for the Kris Lees yard who comes through the Bonny O’Reilly race at Rosehill three weeks ago where she got a mile back in the run but finished off her race with purpose late in the piece to run fourth. Hasn’t fired in three runs at Randwick, but two of those were in Stakes races and the other was the Provincial Championship Final. Big chance here.
Race Seven (15:00) : Fujitsu Air Conditioning WJ McKell Cup 2400m:
Back Me: 6 Broadside (Bet Now: $2.50) is a talented stayer for the Waterhouse/Bott team who looks one of the hardest to beat. He is on the quick back up after racing last Saturday over 2000m at Rosehill where he was ridden with a bit of confidence and arrogance and duly saluted, with a bit in reserve to my eye. Up to 2400m and with the fitness under the belt, he’ll take some beating.
Big Danger: 1 Allergic (Bet Now: $4.20) has to carry the decent weight but he has the class/quality on his side and is clearly knocking on the door to win. Just got a bit too far back in the Lord Mayors Cup last start at Rosehill but he still finished off with purpose when a close up second to Top Of My List. Outstanding 2400m record and class will take him a long way.
Long Shot: 12 Plot Twist (Bet Now: $34.00) is a horse who could potentially be the knockout runner at good odds. He ran over 2200m at Scone a fortnight back and perhaps was ridden a bit too close to the speed but to his credit he was game in defeat behind Lautaro. Produced a tough effort to win at this track/distance on Melbourne Cup Day but looks a better horse now.
Race Eight (15:40) : Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap 1100m:
Back Me: 11 Badajoz (Bet Now: $3.50) clearly on top for me. He was a bit of an enigma once upon a time but he has really found his true form in recent times and resumes here in a very winnable race. Only ran twice during the Summer. Won first up brilliantly at Randwick before beating all bar Scarlet Rain at Rosehill. Trials leading in have been outstanding, he flies fresh and loves Randwick. Ticks the boxes.
Big Danger: 13 Upscale (Bet Now: $6.00) is a mare I’m keeping a close eye on. Resumes for Kris Lees after a very solid Spring prep which ended with a down the track effort here on a heavy track behind a subsequent Stakes performer in Kinshachi. Trialled at the start of May when fifth to Dal Cielo but she is unbeaten first up and the firmer the surface, the better her chances.
Long Shot: 3 Boss Lane (Bet Now: $26.00) is a pretty good sprinter that is first up here for the Ron Quinton stable. He hasn’t done a great deal for a while now, but keep in mind he has faced some pretty hot fields and has been far from disgraced. Trialled last week behind Impending and went very good to the eye. Loves racing on his home track and can pull out a run fresh.
Race Nine (16:20) : One Solutions Handicap (72) 1400m:
Back Me: 9 Wayanka (Bet Now: $3.90) is a progressive three year old for Chris Waller who I think can measure up here. He’s won both starts this time in, both coming over the six furlongs at Canterbury and both times he has been ridden superbly by Bowman. Won very well first up and the form out of that race has held up with Pelorus Jack winning two races. Looks ready for the 1400m now and isn’t badly treated at the weights.
Big Danger: 4 Coolcraft (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented gelding for the Gwenda Markwell camp who has been excellent in two runs back from a break. Ran over 1250m at Canterbury a tick over two weeks back and closed off strongly late to run third to Bratislava. Third up now, he should be ready fitness wise and stable should be always respected when they come to town.
Long Shot: 1 Magical Stance (Bet Now: $16.00) is a middle distance/stayer that is first up for the Ron Quinton yard. He hasn’t won for a long time and can be hard to trust, but this is the sort of race where he could fire up in fresh. Two trials leading in have been quite good, both in handy time, so he has been given a good grounding for his first up assignment.
