Nine races will be run and won at Sandown this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:35) Ladbrokes Back Yourself 1200m
7 Scipio (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of All Too Hard on debut for the Danny O’Brien camp. This bloke has only had the one public jump out, which came last Friday at Flemington. Olly was on and he wasn’t asked to do a great deal, near the speed along the inside section, but he looked to move nicely and did everything right. Draws a decent gate and Olly sticks.
6 Prince Of Caviar (Bet Now: $4.20) makes his long awaited debut for the Hawkes camp. He is of course the son of the great Black Caviar, but her first horse hasn’t exactly lit up the track so it’ll be interesting to see what this boy does. His jump outs have been good, nothing to jump up and down about, but enough to say he has ability.
Race has really fallen away after scratchings so I’ll go with a first starter 13 Tahitian Dancer (Bet Now: $91.00), trained by Shane Nicholls. Daughter of Dawn Approach, so she’ll be better over further, but her jump outs at Mornington have been quite encouraging, the latest on May 9 where she won and she looked to move quite nicely. At double figures, I’ll be backing both her and Scipio.
Race 2. (12:10) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap (78) 1200m
14 Overstep (Bet Now: $7.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but she finds a very winnable race here on her best form. She ran at Caulfield a fortnight back and closed off really well late in the race when a narrow second to Jaws Of Steel. Should get a sweet run from the barrier here and rates highly.
6 Ballet Master (Bet Now: $17.00) could represent some value here. Pat Hyland trains this bloke, who who resumed over 1300m and was okay without shooting the lights out behind Silentz. Not normally a first up horse but is 2/2 second up, albeit well placed each run. Maps well and stable going really well.
8 Dantga (Bet Now: $14.00) is a former Northern NSW horse who had his first run for the Greg Eurell team here a couple of weeks back at the midweeks where he was close up behind Sacred Sham. He should take really good improvement from that and when in NSW, he had a really good second up record. Outside chance.
Race 3. (12:50) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Exotics Handicap (90) 2400m
Going to stick fat with 1 Exalted Lightning (Bet Now: $4.15). He resumed in the Port Adelaide Cup last Saturday where the class probably found him out but I thought he closed off really well late behind Yogi, who’d start odds on here against this lot. Rawiller on, drops in depth and is a proven weight carrier…happy to be with him.
8 Lycurgus (Bet Now: $2.50) gave them an absolute spanking at this track/distance last time out. He was given a 12/10 by Daniel Moor and really if you were on, it was a rather painless watch and he never really looked in trouble. Bit more depth here, but he’s found winning form and loses nothing with Olly jumping on.
12 Opposition (Bet Now: $15.00) interests me. He had trialled up okay prior to making his Australian debut three weeks back over the Flemington mile and though well beaten, I thought his run had merit behind Another Bullseye. The rise to 2400m is perfect, he draws a sweet gate, has upside and looks the value.
Race 4. (13:30) Ladbrokes Australian Steeplechase 3400m
1 Gold Medals (Bet Now: $2.75) on top. Symon Wilde trains this bloke, who did an unbelievable job during the Warrnambool Carnival, winning the Brierly before backing up to score a memorable win in the Grand Annual. Back to 3400m looks his go, and is a proven weight carrier, plus the depth here is thin. Looks the one.
6 The Dominator (Bet Now: $3.70) did indeed what his name said last time out at the Bool, leading throughout under Pateman and finding plenty late when challenged to beat off King Kamada. John Allen goes back on and I think his best chance of winning is to make this a truly run 3400m, and make Gold Medals work.
10 King Kamada (Bet Now: $5.75) is still a maiden over the jumps but gee he is racing well. He got very close to knocking off The Dominator at the Bool last time out but just couldn’t quite get there in a thrilling finale. Looked to trial well at Ballarat last Tuesday and I think with firmer footing, he’ll be more effective.
Race 5. (14:10) Ladbrokes Australian Hurdle 3400m
Going to have a throw at the stumps in the shape of 6 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $15.00), who has done an excellent job in two runs for the Eric Musgrove team. First run was an outstanding maiden win over the jumps during the Warrnambool Carnival before going to Casterton last Sunday and running a game second to Cougar Express. He’ll stay all day and he looks to be jumping quite cleanly.
1 Ancient King (Bet Now: $12.00) is the class runner of the field, by a fair distance, but there has to be a question mark on how well he is going at the moment. Galleywood run was just fair and then in the Casterton Cup, he was just plain. Jumping is his go, he has the credits in the bank…he can win, but I couldn’t back him.
4 Honey Steel’s Gold (Bet Now: $13.00) is a beauty for the Hayes/Dabernig team. He hasn’t raced since the Galleywood during the Warrnambool Carnival where he closed off well late but no match for Two Hats. Freshened up and looked to trial well enough last Tuesday at Ballarat. He always tries hard and will be thereabouts.
Race 6. (14:50) Ladbrokes Cash Out Handicap 2100m
1 Lucky For All (Bet Now: $1.60) should be putting this field away before heading to the Queensland Derby. His win a fortnight back at Caulfield was just unbelievable. He spanked a quality field and did it despite doing plenty wrong. Puts everything together here, if he maintains his form…it’ll be a space job.
11 Mazzuro (Bet Now: $31.00) is a very interesting runner. Paul Richards trains this bloke, from NZ, and I think originally he was over here with the SA Derby in mind but plans didn’t go right. He let down nicely to win last time out at Geelong, beating Wolfe Tonne. That was 2200m and he was strong late so 2100m here no issue.
15 Slick Back (Bet Now: $35.00) is a horse I could definitely have something on for a place. Not sure he will be winning but I’m sure he will run well. He comes through the Heavenly Thought race here last Wednesday where he had to drag the field up to the leader and while he didn’t win, I thought his effort was commendable. Extra trip a big tick.
Race 7. (15:28) Samson Handicap (84) 1400m
He’s a thinker but as long as he keeps winning, 9 Jaws Of Steel (Bet Now: $3.45) stays in the good books. He has tried to turn it up his past couple but has been ridden a treat to win. This is his hardest test to date since joining the Weir camp but I think he’s going about it well enough to figure prominently.
2 Peacock (Bet Now: $5.25) is the interesting runner. James Cummings trains this gelding, who has turned the corner since being gelded. Dominant winner three back at Rosehill and the two subsequent runs have been satisfactory. Looks to get a good run near the speed and is hard fit now. Definite threat here.
1 Lord Durante (Bet Now: $27.00) is getting on in years but gee he is racing well. He resumed during the Warrnambool Carnival and closed off well late behind Inn Keeper, who has come out to win again, so that form reads very well for this. Best form is over further but the run was good. Reckon he’s one for exotics for sure.
Race 8. (16:05) Ladbrokes Info Hub Handicap (78) 1600m
Tricky race but siding with 8 Smooth Landing (Bet Now: $5.25). She comes through the Adelaide Guineas at Morphettville where to the eye she was plain behind Peaceful State, but that race was much stronger than what she faces here and I think with proper clear air, she’ll be more effective. Think she can bounce back.
1 Palazzo Vecchio…(Bet Now: $8.50) well what has happened this prep? Start of the Autumn, she looked an Oaks horse but her form really tapered away. She hasn’t raced since Anzac Day at Flemington where she wasn’t far off Think Bleue. This is a very winnable race if she finds her best. Just depends if she wants to show it.
5 Light Romance (Bet Now: $16.00) is an Ellerton/Zahra trained filly who comes through the Platinum Angel race at Caulfield a fortnight back where on face value, she was disappointing but perhaps it was a touch of the second up syndrome kicking in. Third up at the mile, from a good draw, no excuses for mine.
Race 9. (16:40) Ladbrokes Muti Maker Handicap 1400m
1 Fifty Stars (Bet Now: $2.55) might well be a future star. He is three for three to start the career, the latest coming last Wednesday here where he led all the way under Brad Rawiller and gee he was good. Was there to be beaten but he drew clear late and was dominant. Keen on him to continue the winning sequence.
5 Andaz (Bet Now: $5.75) is building towards a win for Chris Waller. He ran here last Wednesday and did an enormous job to get as close as he did to Fifty Stars after he got a mile back in the run. Keep thinking about his run in the Coolmore in the Spring…the talent is definitely there and he can win this for sure.
12 Casa De Lago (Bet Now: $31.00) is a smart filly that resumes for the Patrick Payne team. This girl hasn’t raced since embarking on a Tassie Oaks campaign where she ran okay but the staying trips found her out. Two trials leading in have been encouraging and stable is going really well. Definite yard/market watch.
