WA racing returns to Belmont this Saturday where the feature race is the Provincial Championship Final. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:14) Tabtouch Handicap (78+) 2200m
4 Dudemanbro (Bet Now: $3.55) on top in a tricky staying contest. He is on the seven day back up for the Warwick camp after racing at Ascot last Saturday where he got off the speed and chased hard all the way but had to settle for a narrow second to all the way winner Palace Rogue. Should be a more genuine tempo here and I reckon he’ll be last man standing.
2 At The Ready (Bet Now: $2.40) comes through a 2100m race at Ascot a fortnight back where Pike had him out the back in a slowly run affair and given the tempo, he didn’t have much hope of running on successfully, but he stuck on pretty well in defeat I thought behind Master Magician. Hopefully more tempo this time around and he can go close.
3 Corporate Larrikin (Bet Now: $9.50) will be setting the tempo and it’ll be interesting to see what tactics they go with. They tried to make it a sit/sprint last time, which worked to some extent, but he didn’t get the win when third to Master Magician. I hope they roll along a bit and make it a true staying contest.
Race 2. (14:53) Mumm Champagne Plate 1000m
2 Market Ruler (Bet Now: $1.60) should be winning this. Simon Miller trains this youngster, who was good two back behind Black Sabbath before backing up a week later and bolting up under Pike. The field here looks to have a touch of depth to it, but not enough to see her get beat I think, unless the Pearce first starter is a star.
11 Essential Spice (Bet Now: $6.50) is indeed that Team Pearce first starter, this one a Gingerbread Man filly. Really like what I’ve seen from her in two trials, the latest seeing her bolt up. Had she drew a gate, I’d probably just about have her on top, but from the wide barrier, I’m just not sure where she gets to in the run.
1 Carolina Reaper (Bet Now: $18.00) resumed in the race won by Market Ruler a fortnight back. This Paul Jordan trained youngster had a relatively good run just off the pace and tried hard but just ran out off puff late. Should come right on from that and I think his chances will be best served if he pushes forward to be on speed.
Race 3. (15:31) Iron Jack Handicap (1MW) 1600m
7 Nordic King (Bet Now: $5.00) on top in a tricky race. Adam Durrant trains this three year old, who debuted over 1300m at Northam where he was on speed throughout under Pike and despite never really looking like the winner, he kept finding under hard riding to score a narrow, gritty but impressive victory. He can measure up with natural improvement.
1 Alpha Sky (Bet Now: $2.65) was a superb winner over 1400m at Ascot a fortnight back. He led all the way despite doing plenty wrong. He wanted to pull hard in front, which made sure of a good tempo, giving those from behind their chance to run on, but he kept finding and won well. He can’t get away with that at the mile I’d suspect, so he needs to relax, but if he does, he’ll go close.
2 Gifted Warrior (Bet Now: $7.00) comes through that Alpha Sky race. He had the suck run behind the speed after playing up in the gates but in the end, I thought he had his chance when fourth, beaten three lengths. He has teased a bit this time in, but hasn’t quite gone on with it. Good gate and 3kg claim for Kirby helps.
Race 4. (16:10) Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (78+) 1600m
7 Galaxy Star (Bet Now: $1.60) should be winning. On the seven day back up for Team Williams after winning very impressively over 1400m at Ascot last Saturday. She got a fair way back in the run but gradually Pike picked his way through the field and once he got her out into clear air, it was game over. Should be even further suited here and win.
1 Pinzu (Bet Now: $9.00) is another on the seven day turnaround, this one for Adam Durrant. He ran over 1500m last Saturday at Ascot and really, if you were on, apologies for bringing up the nightmare. It was pretty much a barrier trial for the horse. He was held up all the way down the straight when bolting. Saves his best for Belmont and surely won’t get pocketed this time around.
2 War God (Bet Now: $15.00) looks to be racing really well at the moment for Neville Parnham. He ran over 1500m at Ascot two weeks ago where he too was a little unlucky but in his case, he was out in time to let down and finish off when second to My Greek Boy. Should get a lovely run from the draw and the claim for Castle helps.
Race 5. (16:48) Peninsula Dining Room Belmont Park Book Now Handicap 1300m
3 Arcadia Prince (Bet Now: $2.35) looks the winner. Team Williams train this three year old, who resumed over 1400m at Ascot three weeks back where he settled off the pace and once he got out, it looked all over but he took a little too long to wind up when beaten a lip by Sir Snugalot. Back to 1300m off a good speed should see him take care of these.
Very interested in 10 Beat The Devil (Bet Now: $6.00) for Simon Miller. Visually, an outstanding debut win at Northam. Sat on speed throughout and when clicked up, his change up speed was electric. The query is how good is he? I don’t know yet but he will get a good test because Arcadia Prince is one of the better three year olds in WA.
8 Rockon Tommy (Bet Now: $14.00) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Ascot where he was wide no cover throughout and that early work just told late when fifth to Masquerade. Freshened and back to his favourite track with a couple of gear changes, I reckon he is the clear watch horse here.
Race 6. (17:25) Glenroy Chaff Handicap (1MW) 1000m
5 Stageman (Bet Now: $2.15) on top for me. This Team Williams trained three year old is four weeks between runs since resuming over 1100m at Ascot where he had the 1/1 sit and looked to travel well but when the sprint came on, he was left flat footed behind a potential star in Fabergino. Back to 1000m off a fast speed, he’ll take some beating.
6 Hand Of Heart (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented son of Snitzel that resumes for the Nick Cox team. This three year old showed good promise when last in work and he looks to have really come on if the two trials are any guide, both of which he has won. Think he wins if the fav is off his game.
9 Undisclosed (Bet Now: $31.00) is the knockout. This Colin Webster trained mare has always shown good promise throughout her career, but finally she seems to be relaxing and attacking the line. Really good run last time out at Ascot when back and closing off behind You Watching Me. She’ll get back from the gate I suspect and launch late.
Race 7. (18:00) Provincial Championship Series Final 1400m
Back MeEach-way, I don’t think you can go wrong backing 13 Bevel (Bet Now: $31.00). He ran in a Kalgoorlie heat of this Series and was unlucky not to win, getting badly held up at a vital stage when second to It’s Dynamite. He should do no work from the good draw off a fast speed, and he’ll be strong late. I think he’s a good each way gamble.
2 Vital Silver (Bet Now: $3.10) is a Team Pearce trained gelding who resumed in a Pinjarra heat of this series where he had the 1/1 sit throughout and looked to race a touch keenly, and that early burn just saw him gassed at the end. Bolted up in his lone second up run and looks to map ideally here. Definite threat.
4 Mongolian Warlord (Bet Now: $23.00) is the knockout at odds for mine. Steve Wolfe trains this gelding, who qualified for this series by winning the Albany heat. He has since had a couple of runs at Ascot where he has been wide throughout in total forgive runs. The barrier makes things tricky here, but he has the quality.
Race 8. (18:35) Vale Alan Croll Handicap (66+) 1200m
12 Enticing Star (Bet Now: $1.50) for me in the get out. Looks a pretty exciting prospect for the Adam Durrant team, winning all four career outings, the latest coming a fortnight back at Ascot where she looked in a bit of bother on the bend but in the end Pike always had her in a winning position and her class got her home. This is a good test but happy to be with her.
10 Kokopu (Bet Now: $10.00) looks the only other winning chance. This close relation to Pounamu has been a revelation since coming to WA, winning both starts over here in dynamic fashion and really attacking the line with purpose each time. He’ll spot them a start, but I have no doubt he’ll look the winner at some stage.
2 River Dance (Bet Now: $15.00) is the interesting runner. Fenella Martin trains this above average gelding, who is first up here. His Spring/Summer prep was overall outstanding with several victories next to his name and confirming himself as a city horse. Three solid trials to prepare for his return and the quality is definitely there to run well.
