Nine races have been set down for Ascot this Saturday, with Oaks and Derby lead ups the focus. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Lex Piper Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Lex Piper Stakes
Race 1. (16:13) Belhus Racing Stables (rs0mw) 1200m
The gate looks tricky for 1 Rejuva King (Bet Now: $4.80) but the extra 100m looks ideal and he did run a beauty on debut from a similar draw. That debut came over 1100m here two weeks ago and his finale was very good when second to Saintorio, who ran well last Saturday, so the form reads well. If he gets the luck from the gate, he’s the one they have to beat.
6 Magnaburma (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Magnus gelding for Stephen Miller that is on debut. He’s won both trials to get ready for start one and while they haven’t been anything flash, what I have liked about them is that each time he has been placed under pressure and each time he has responded positively, which is a good sign. 1200m on debut looks no issue and draws soft.
12 Dare Me (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Dion Luciani trained first starter that I think has to be respected. Hasn’t been seen since January 31 when trialling over 400m at Belmont, and it is hard to gauge with confidence off those 400m trials, but she looked to move well enough and stable has had a good season with their juveniles.
Race 2. (16:53) Glenroy Chaff (bm66+) 1000m
5 Pink Carats (Bet Now: $1.95) is flying for Simon Miller and no reason why he can’t win again. Four weeks between runs since a strong on speed win at this track/distance when ridden a treat by Carbery and in a driving go, finished best. Maps super again from the draw and is hard to beat.
2 Miss Frost (Bet Now: $14.00) is capable of blowing this field. Just not sure where she is at. Resumed just under five weeks back here and failed to fire a shot in a plain effort behind This’ll Testya, a subsequent Stakes winner, but was found post race to be making a respiratory noise, so there was a clear excuse. She’s better than that.
I doubt 7 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $21.00) wins but for wider multiples I could entertain him. Has been kept on ice, not raced since January 8 here when down the track behind a pretty sharp sprinter in Platinum Bullet. Usually sprints well fresh and does no work from the gate. I’d include in exotics.
Race 3. (17:29) Quayclean (rs1mw) 1400m
Looks a lovely race for 8 Secret Deploy (Bet Now: $2.10). Promising three year old for Adam Durrant that resumed over 1200m here two weeks ago and he was one of the real eye catchers of the meeting from near last when a flashing third to Cristal Dane. Fitter, up to 1400m, if he’s within range 400m out, good luck beating him.
3 Cobbanco (Bet Now: $10.00) is a son of Playing God for Brian Lucas who has done little wrong in his six start career. Ran over 1200m at Belmont last Wednesday where he just lacked the turn of foot to put them away but stayed on and was sound in defeat behind No Dice, finishing a narrow second. Up to 1400m I like and is a threat.
10 Guard The Safe (Bet Now: $6.00) doesn’t win out of turn but is an honest animal for Fred Kersley that should be around the mark. Looked the winner last Wednesday at Belmont but couldn’t quite finish it off and was bloused late in a tight go. Lands in a plum spot from the draw and is a first four contender.
Race 4. (18:04) Lex Piper Stakes 1600m
1600m is a genuine query with 1 Trix Of The Trade (Bet Now: $1.50) but he draws to do no work and has a fair bit on these re class, and I do think that class will get him home. Strong effort two weeks ago in taking out the Challenge, though he had to work hard for it. Gets a suck run and on class alone, he wins.
7 Henchard (Bet Now: $9.00) is a progressive animal for Adam Durrant that resumed with a strong win over 1400m at Belmont, really finishing his race off with purpose and despite being out of puff late, momentum and the strength of Parnham got him home. Hard to beat against this lot.
10 Tell Nothin’ (Bet Now: $91.00) is heading towards the Derby and likely uses this as a prep run, but if they overdo it in front, he’ll be last man standing given he has a 2200m run under the belt last time. If it becomes a sit/sprint, he struggles, but think the tempo will be genuine so he’ll be strong late.
Race 5. (18:40) Tabtouch-better Your Bet-rs1mw 1800m
The rise to 1800m looks ideal for 8 She’s A Sweet Deel (Bet Now: $3.60). Ran over the mile at Belmont last start where she got a fair way out of her ground but was good late without threatening. She’s racing like further will suit, which she gets here, and IMO gets a jockey upgrade. Hard to beat.
2 Tri For Us (Bet Now: $3.60) has found winning form…now can she go on with it? She had to go to Albany to find winning form but it was a win, and a dominant win, bolting up over 1900m. Back to 1800m I find interesting but overall, this is a very winnable race if she holds her form.
5 Kernan Rock (Bet Now: $10.00) is on the seven day back up after racing over the mile here last Saturday and I thought his finale from well back was quite good when a close up fifth behind All In Red. Like him up in trip and if the good gate is used to advantage, I think he’ll be dangerous.
Race 6. (19:15) Ascot 1000 Guineas 1800m
The rise to 1800m looks ideal for 1 Fine Romance (Bet Now: $2.40). Contested the Challenge Stakes two weeks ago over 1500m here where she got a fair way back off the speed and while she was never really a threat, I liked the way she finished off behind Trix Of The Trade. That has to be A1 form for this.
9 Constant Dreaming (Bet Now: $12.00) is an Adam Durrant trained filly that resumed over 1400m at Geraldton. She was looming to be the winner but seemingly struck in the head with a whip and she didn’t finish it off afterwards. Like her up in trip and does have more upside than most.
I think this run will tell us if 3 Mrs America (Bet Now: $9.00) is indeed a contender or pretender. Forgive run fresh when wide no cover. Then went to 1400m here when back off the speed and worked home just fairly without threatening. I think her best is good enough. Just hasn’t shown it this time in.
Race 7. (19:55) Amelia Park (bm72+) 1200m
6 Comes A Time (Bet Now: $2.30) is bursting to win a race and with the A1 form, I think he wins here and is one of the best on the card. Ran three weeks go at Pinjarra and worked home well from just off the speed, albeit no match for Clairvoyance, who spanked them at Stakes level on Sunday, so the form has been well and truly ticked off and hard fit now, he gets his chance.
11 Queen Of Soul (Bet Now: $7.00) comes here with relatively fresh legs for Simon Miller, having not raced since January 3 when down the track in the Mandurah Cup behind The Great One. She does seem most effective at 1200m so fresh legs at this trip I like. Just want to see what the market does.
1 Kenyluck (Bet Now: $15.00) is four weeks between runs since contesting the Scenic Blast here when on speed and tried hard, but just felt the pinch late behind Hot Zed, with that class of race just proving to be a bit rich for him. Do like him back to this level and Altieri is back on.
Race 8. (20:32) Crown Towers (bm72+) 1600m
5 Bruce Almighty (Bet Now: $3.60) looks the straight bat option in the get out. He’s a beauty for Neville Parnham that is around the mark more often than not. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago and tried hard but was no match late for Resortman, who finally put it all together. Back up to the mile is a big tick and he should land in a plum spot from the draw.
2 Dom To Shoot (Bet Now: $10.00) finds a lovely race if he found any of his old form. Contested the Pinjarra Mile three weeks ago and was never really a factor from well back in the run when down the track behind Utgard Loki. If the inside gate is used, he can sit much closer in the run and his best is clearly good enough.
4 Tinsnip (Bet Now: $27.00) can bounce back hard. Smashed in betting fresh but went too keen early and had nothing left for the finale. He then went to the 1400m at Ascot again when wide no cover in a clear forgive. Hasn’t set the world on fire this time in but with the claim and now hard fit, an improved showing is on the cards.
