Boxing Day racing in Sydney heads to Randwick for a nine race card, headlined by the Summer Cup (2000m). The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:05) Boxing Day Plate 1100m
Think this race is all about 8 Vandoula Lass (Bet Now: $1.95 TOP ODDS) and 9 Vianello, so think if you back both you’ll make a profit. Leaning towards the former though because she was just so dominant on debut at Sandown, winning like it was a barrier trial. Beat nothing, but the arrogance of the win impressed me, along with the jumpouts prior. Think she’s a Magic Millions contender for sure and should confirm that here.
I have a lot of time for 9 Vianello (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) for James Cummings. Her debut win over 900m at Newcastle was outstanding and when you compare recent 2YO races over 900m there, her time just ranks so high. Did it sitting four wide on speed as well, so think she’s well above average and is a worthy threat.
6 Silver Thorn (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) could be a total blowout here. On debut for Gary Portelli. First trial was nothing flash, but they whacked the Blinkers on for the Kembla trial and he was a different horse. Led throughout and was impressive in good time as well. Not sure he’s got the quality to win here, but a must for multiples.
Race 2. (13:40) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1100m
It’ll be interesting to see what the market does with 17 Pinnacle Prince (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS). Resumes for Cav after a two run Winter prep, which saw him bolt up fresh at Scone before going to a Highway here, where he was backed as if unbeatable. Problem was he bumped into stablemate and subsequent Kosciuszko winner It’s Me, so how well does that form read. The Muswellbrook trial…it was more or less to stretch the legs, but the Scone trial was much better. Wouldn’t be shocked if he was crunched in betting and bolted up.
Giving respect to 5 Toro Toro (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) for Stephen Jones. Trialled up super prior to resuming in a Highway here two weeks back. The query was would 1000m be short of his best and that is how it panned out pretty much. Got backed and worked home well behind Crackneck. Fitter, up to 1100m, think he’s hard to beat.
Can make a little case for 8 Siege Warfare (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) at big odds. He was good late when resuming with a win at Taree before racing in the Crackneck Highway from a fortnight back here. He was back near last in the run and never really a threat, but liked the way he finished his race off. If he’s within range on the turn, he’s going well enough to threaten.
Race 3. (14:15) Schweppes (bm72) 1600m
Think up to the mile on the bigger track will really help the cause of 5 Zing (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS). Resumed over 1400m at Warwick Farm where the market said she would need the run but thought she ran well when third to Onchao, not really getting a chance to build proper momentum. Should be able to get that here and form around her reads well, including a win over Fulmina.
10 Bowery Breeze (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a Paul Cave trained mare that is flying. The unknown is 1600m but she’s racing well and has a good finale on her. Ran over 1300m at Warwick Farm last time out and closed off strongly from the back nearer the outside of the pack when fourth to Onchao. Racing as if 1600m suits and handles all conditions.
The pattern is there to suggest that 3 Trust The Process (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) can prove hard to beat here. All three career wins have come at the mile, he is 2/2 second up and those wins have come at the trip, obviously. Found the line nicely last time out on the Kenso track behind Bergen and with the claim for Sherry, think he’s hard to beat.
Race 4. (14:50) Ranvet (bm78) 1800m
6 Come Along (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is yet to prove himself beyond a mile but is racing as if the 1800m will suit. He ran over 1550m under the lights at Canterbury last time and finished off strongly. Just no match for the finale produced by a good mare in On The White Turf. Wet track is no issue and is racing like 1800m should be fine.
5 Criminal Code (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Former WA galloper that seems to be racing really well at the moment but the unknown is clearly wet ground. On breeding, he should swim, but the three times he has raced on soft ground, he hasn’t fired overall, but latest wet track run was a beauty behind On The White Turf.
7 Prospectus (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) has been up forever it seems like but is holding his form for Chris Waller. Three weeks between runs since racing at Rosehill where he got back off the speed and tried hard despite hitting his usual flat spot when fourth to stablemate and impressive winner The Elanora. Think he’s a leading chance against these.
Race 5. (15:30) Drinkwise Mile (bm88) 1600m
He might need one more, but $41+ was bet early about 4 Kiss The Bride (Bet Now: $20.00) and that just looked a bit on the silly side. Finished 11/14 first up behind Kirwan’s Lane, but it was a day where making up ground from the back was a tough ask. His late splits were quite good I thought. Rachel King jumps on and if he can hold a forward spot, ideally stalking stablemate Frosty Rocks, gee I think he’ll run a big race.
The best chance of 3 Frosty Rocks (Bet Now: $3.60) winning is if he leads so I’m expecting Sherry to be aggressive from the outside in finding the front and holding it. Thought it was a poor ride from Bossy in The Gateway, handing up the lead rather easily to Master Jamie and pretty much handed the race to that North Queensland star. If he holds the lead and doesn’t cop too much pressure, he can bounce back.
1 Humbolt Current (Bet Now: $27.00) is a horse I can make a case for at odds. Resumed three weeks ago at Rosehill over 1400m, a trip short of his best, yet he worked home pretty well late in the piece behind Edison, who won impressively last Saturday, so the form reads alright. Might need one more but is a must for multiples.
Race 6. (16:10) Summer Cup 2000m
8 Primitivo (Bet Now: $11.00) is flying for John Thompson and is looking to be ticking along beautifully towards the Magic Millions Stayers. He ran over the mile here two weeks ago and I thought his run was enormous. Back near last in the run and had to make his run from around the 700m-800m mark. Still loomed. Just ran out of puff late to run fourth. Fitter, up to 2000m…really keen on him running well en route to the Gold Coast.
The Mark Newnham stable is flying at the moment and I think that run can continue via 9 Spirit Ridge (Bet Now: $3.40). He ran over the mile here two weeks ago here where I thought Parr gave him a peach steer just off the speed. Was there to win but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a second to Kirwan’s Lane. He’s bursting to win one and gets his chance here.
7 Berdibek (Bet Now: $20.00) is going really well I feel for John O’Shea. Resumed with a big win during Cup Week at Flemington, then was tardy away and a total forgive at Kembla on Gong Day. He then raced in the Villiers and just had no hope with the race shape and track pattern. Suited back to this level and a rise to 2000m is perfect. Hard to beat.
Race 7. (16:50) Sky Racing Active (bm78) 1200m
Hoping for this track to dry up into the good range because if that does eventuate, I’m really keen on 5 Quantico (Bet Now: $4.00) running well here fresh. Talented animal for John O’Shea that resumes and he is a horse who saves his best purely for dry ground, where he is 3/4 with a close second there as well. Loved his two trials to get ready and Blinkers on first up signals intent. Keen.
Like 11 Knickpoint (Bet Now: $5.50) here. James Cummings trained gelding that resumed over 1100m here two weeks ago where he just got a bit too far back in the run but really liked the way he finished his race off behind Salina Dreaming. Has the run under the belt and up to 1200m is a big tick. Has more upside than most as well.
Fast run races does look the sweet spot for 2 Hulk (Bet Now: $9.00). That was the set up he got two back at Kembla on Gong Day and gave them a spanking. Went up to an 88 and up to 1100m. He didn’t have the best of luck but doubt he was going to win behind Pandemic. This looks a much better set up for him and he can easily bounce back.
Race 8. (17:30) Precise Air (bm78) 1400m
14 Ellsberg (Bet Now: $3.30) has been up a little while but continues to race so well in his first prep. Once Clark found the front on him three weeks back at Rosehill, it was race over and he bolted up in a spank job of his rivals. Should land near the front once again and if he holds his form, he’ll take a power of beating against the older horses.
10 Greek Hero (Bet Now: $9.00) is racing like he just needs runs under the belt now and third up here, should just about be at peak fitness. Backed as if unbeatable in the Nowra Cup last time out but was very one paced when the sprint on and whacked away late to run third. He’s better than that and the resumption at Kembla was a beauty. Deserves another chance.
1 Juventus (Bet Now: $14.00) has returned in great order for Kris Lees and is one of the leading chances here. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where I thought Bowman gave him a peach. Was there to win and loomed, but had no answers late for the finale produced by I Am Vinnie. Bursting to win one and gets his chance.
Race 9. (18:10) The Agency Real Estate (bm78) 1200m
5 Starla (Bet Now: $7.00) hasn’t really set the fire on wet ground, but Chris Waller is flying at the moment. Both runs back from a spell have been super, the latest coming two weeks ago here at this track/distance when a closing third to the low flying Snapdancer. Fast run 1200m does appear her sweet spot. Just not sure about her on wet ground so hopefully the rain stays away.
8 Dunbrody Power (Bet Now: $6.50) is hard to beat here. Kris Lees trained mare that is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Rosehill where she was just left totally flat footed when the sprint went on but she picked up the bit and worked home strongly when third to Surreal Step. Bigger track now, think she can bounce back.
Good speed here should suit 6 Jay Jay D’Ar (Bet Now: $15.00). Comes through the Snapdancer form line from two weeks back here and I do feel that will be a red hot form race. She just got too far back in the run but liked the way she finished her race off. J Mac on, can sit off a good speed here and prove quite strong at the end.
