Boxing Day racing in Sydney will take place at Randwick for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

1 Zalatte (Bet Now: $1.40) on top but I don’t think she’s a moral. I think very highly of her and think she’s an Oaks winner in waiting off the back of two outstanding wins to kick off her career, the latest coming a couple of Saturdays back at Rosehill when producing a lovely turn of foot from off the pace to wear them down and get the job done. Randwick mile looks perfect, J Mac on…looks the winner but I’m wary of the stablemate.

Danger

3 Welsh Legend (Bet Now: $4.00) has really grown a leg in recent times and was the run of the evening last Friday night at Canterbury when bungling the start yet sprouting wings late to just miss out on picking up Smiling Manolito. The mile looks ideal for her. If she can jump cleanly and get the back of Zalatte, I think she’ll be very dangerous and can definitely win.

Long Shot

2 Snippetspeed (Bet Now: $7.00) looks the third pick of the three main chances. Team Snowden trains this gelding, who comes through the Smiling Manolito race mentioned above and while he had his chance he stuck on well in running third. Winkers go on to hopefully sharpen him up. I don’t think he can turn the tables on Welsh Legend but should run third for mine.

At the odds on offer, 11 Hafaawa (Bet Now: $4.40) is nearly the main bet on the program. The Hayes/Dabernig team trains this well bred filly, who is having her first start with two trials under the belt and gee she’s been impressive in each appearance, winning the latest one by three lengths under minimal pressure. Tom Marquand is a strong rider and can whip with both left and right hands. She looks a lovely filly and clearly the one to beat for mine.

Danger

1 Bacchus (Bet Now: $10.00) is a son of Pierro on debut for Chris Waller. This colt has had two trials this time in to get ready for the first start, leading all the way to win the second one here. Was pushed out, but responded and on the line he had the ears pricked, suggesting there was plenty left in the locker. He’ll land somewhere near the speed and should run well.

Long Shot

4 Intimidating (Bet Now: $10.00) is an interesting runner. Son of Sebring for Kris Lees that debuts in town and the general consensus is that when Kris debuts a horse in town, they are pretty good. Nothing to jump up and down about re the trials, but the second one was eye catching and he did close off nicely under little riding. Gets the claim for Weatherley and draws well.

Race 3. (14:20) Bowermans Office Furniture Handicap (70) 2400m

5 Quality Approach (Bet Now: $4.60) for me. The Maher/Eustace stable trains this three year old, who has been doing a really good job in recent times against the older horses, the latest at Newcastle when winning the time honoured Gary Harley Handicap at Newcastle. Beat scrubs, but he put them away really nicely and the 2400m here will be no issue for him.

Danger

3 Tunero (Bet Now: $4.00) steps up to the 2400m for the first time but is racing as if he’ll be okay with it. He ran over 1900m at Canterbury last time where he tried hard and was closing off nicely at the end but Dylan’s Romance pinched a margin and clung on. Until they run at the trip, you don’t know if they’ll handle it but the signs are there that he’ll be fine.

Long Shot

1 Equipped (Bet Now: $5.00) is having a decent prep for John Sargent. Appreciated the drop in depth/grade last time at Hawkesbury and finished best to prove far too good for his rivals. Got the confidence under the belt now and Robbie Dolan sticks, so there are enough boxes ticked to suggest that stepping back up to metro level will be fine for this gelding.

Race 4. (14:55) ATC Handicap (70) 1100m

11 Nicconita (Bet Now: $4.20) is a John Bateman trained mare that is first up. This mare was a bridesmaid in several Highways in the Winter where she loomed to win but just kept finding one or two better. Resumes without a public trial but generally performs well fresh, is down in the weights and should get a sweet trip from the inside gate. Definite threat.

Danger

8 Sophiella (Bet Now: $3.10) is a Bjorn Baker trained mare who is yet to win in three runs this prep but hasn’t been far off. Last run came at Gosford in the Malcolm Cusick Preview where she just missed out on the win when beaten a lip by Anna’s Joy. Creeping up in the weights but this race doesn’t appear to be overly strong, gets a soft draw and is fourth up, so she should be hard fit, ready to go.

Long Shot

2 I Am Special (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Gerald Ryan trained mare who should just about be ready to show her best. Three weeks between runs since racing at Warwick Farm where she settled near a hot speed and couldn’t finish it off behind Miss Invincible. Seems to be a horse at her best on the fresh side and I think if the track does dry out, she’s right in the game.

Race 5. (15:30) ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap (64) 1100m

Back Me

13 Wonderbabe (Bet Now: $4.20) looks a nippy filly for Brad Widdup who had just the one soft 760m trial leading up to her resumption over 900m at Newcastle and while the win was nothing flash on face value, there was merit in the performance I felt given she did appear to carry some condition. Reith is on her and she should come over rather comfortably from the gate, land on speed and be hard to beat.

Danger

7 Silver Melody (Bet Now: $7.00) has earned a crack at metro level for mine. Kris Lees trained filly who puts herself on speed and gives her all. Got the win two back at Taree before going to Scone where she looked home but was nabbed on the peg by Norske Code. A hard 1100m I have doubts on with her, but she gets the claim and a soft gate, plus is hard fit.

Long Shot

2 Whiteley (Bet Now: $5.50) looks the one at silly odds. Returns as a gelding for the WaterBott team after doing a bit wrong early on in his career, but only have to go back a couple of runs and he was a length off The Autumn Sun here. The Rosehill trial tells me he’s not ready, but if he has come on since then and brings his best form, I think he’s in the mix for sure.

Race 6. (16:10) Hyland Boxing Day Sale Handicap (70) 1600m

Back Me

I think the $7/thereabouts for 8 The Promise (Bet Now: $5.50) is more than acceptable. This mare is flying for John Thompson, winning her first two runs this prep before going to Hawkesbury and just failing to beat Savvy Ken, a very nice progressive stayer. Back to the Randwick mile looks ideal, good gate, any give in the track is no issue, hard fit, in form…$7 will do me.

Danger

6 Wokurna (Bet Now: $3.20) does have the winning form next to his name and J Mac steers but gee I think he’s short enough in early markets. Only just scraped in last time, beating Beauty Kansas, which isn’t a difficult task. He’s only just got the win at his past two but the big tick for him is that he has found under pressure and kicked hard to win. Harder here, but he’s a winner.

Long Shot

1 Sir Barb (Bet Now: $13.00) is a bit hit and miss but at his best he can win. Ran over 1550m at Canterbury last time and I thought he closed off well in defeat when a narrow fourth to all the way winner Fuel. Bunched finish which leaves me a tad worried but he gets the claim for Robbie Dolan and should do no work from the inside draw. A must for multiples.

Race 7. (16:50) Summer Cup 2000m

Back Me

I reckon a strong 2000m will suit the Matty Smith trained 12 Fierce Impact (Bet Now: $4.40). He is three weeks between runs since racing over 1800m at Rosehill where I thought he had every chance in the straight but couldn’t get past the hard fit/in form Sky Boy, who has since franked the form in the Villiers. Up to 2000m looks ideal and if there is give in the track, I think he’s definitely in the game, and the tick over trial was good.

Danger

3 My Nordic Hero (Bet Now: $3.70) is a horse that is absolutely flying at the moment for Chris Waller. Brilliant winner of the Festival prior to the Villiers over the mile here where he got back and albeit was on the best ground, he worked home very strongly to run third to Sky Boy. Should love the rise to 2000m and J Mac takes over, so there is plenty to like about his chances.

Long Shot

I think the track will be the key to 7 Black On Gold (Bet Now: $19.00). He’s absolutely flying at the moment for Chris Waller, and is doing it on wet tracks, something that he once upon a time hated, or perhaps still hates but is racing so well. Kilmore Cup run was enormous and you could make a small case he goes close to winning with clear air at the right time. Tick over trial was good and 2000m will be no issue.

Race 8. (17:30) Boxing Day Sprint (70) 1200m

Back Me

7 Juventus (Bet Now: $5.50) in the get out. Kris Lees trains this promising gelding, who won both runs last prep before a break, the first win being at Port Macquarie before stepping up to the provincials at Newcastle and beating a well performed stablemate in Chalmers. Latest trial he closed off okay under pressure but he’s never been a star trialler. J Mac booked looks a good lead.

Danger

5 You Make Me Smile (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented three year old for Jason Coyle that resumes and he returns to racing as a gelding. Got very fired up in his races when last in work and usually had no petrol tickets in the end. They’ve decided to cut off his fifth leg and his two trials in readiness for the resumption have been outstanding to the eye. I think he’s ready to go.

Long Shot

8 Aimalac Millie (Bet Now: $27.00) probably needs to improve on current form to be beating these but I could make a small case for her. She pulled hard last time at Canterbury and wasn’t dynamic at the end due to that but stuck on behind Taniko. The key to her looks to be dry ground. if this track does dry out by race eight, from the soft draw, she shouldn’t be underestimated.
