A solid eight race program has been assembled for Morphettville this Boxing Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out three metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:36) UBET Handicap (82) 2500m
I think 4 Trendsetter (Bet Now: $5.50) is one of the better bets on the card. Grant Young trains this stayer and he looks to have a bit of upside and progression about him. Don’t think he beat much last Wednesday at Balaklava but you had to like the way he put them away, especially the final 100m. Rises to city grade, but I am confident he can handle it.
3 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $2.25) bounced back to winning form in a big way last start at this track/distance when absolutely braining them under Jason Holder. He sat near the speed but once he got clear air on the turn, he won as if he was Winx. Can he win another race on the bounce? Hard to know, but has to go in the numbers.
Not really a long shot but 1 Tunes (Bet Now: $2.70) will love the rise to 2500m. He ran over the 1950m on the Parks track last time out where he did a power of work in the run and didn’t pull up 100% post race behind I’m A Princess. I like that Todd Pannell takes the ride and he is one tough, tough stayer, so he’ll make sure this is a genuine 2500m.
Race 2. (14:11) Race Two: Holdfast Insurance Handicap (64) 1600m
1 Grunt (Bet Now: $1.85) should be putting this field away. Mick Price trains this colt who resumed on Werribee Cup Day in a maiden where he was backed as if unbeatable and ran right up to that with an absolute spank job of his rivals. That looked to be a maiden with depth to it so I’m quite confident he can get the job done here.
4 Tiyane (Bet Now: $11.00) is a progressive filly for Tony McEvoy who has had two career outings, both of which have come at Balaklava, the latest resulting in a maiden win and she ran to the line and through it with real purpose. Tongue tie goes on, as does Jamie Kah, so she has a few things going for her. Not sure she beats Grunt.
6 Plover Lover (Bet Now: $12.00) was well backed when racing over 1500m here on December 9 and after a relatively good run near the speed, she loomed for a couple of strides but fell back soon after and was most disappointing behind Ghodeleine. The blinkers are back on again to sharpen her up so she’s the watch.
Race 3. (14:46) Medallion Homes Handicap (70) 1200m
1 Made In Russia (Bet Now: $1.85) had been a bit disappointing in his first two career outings before breaking the maiden status at start three with a dominant win over 1300m on the Parks track. I think back to 1200m is the negative because I think he wants further, but how can you ignore the trainer/jockey combo.
4 Bad Wolf (Bet Now: $4.20) is on the quick back up after racing last Saturday on the Parks track where he was an outsider in the six horse field yet loomed large to win the race and looked home but was nabbed late by Indian Thunder. I think back to 1200m on the course proper looks ideal and should get a lovely run off the pace.
3 Rushwa (Bet Now: $7.00) is next best with the claim for young Huxtable. He was an outsider in betting last time out over the 1250m on the Parks track and just lacked the class to the eye I thought behind Indian Thunder, a talented Darren Weir three year old. I think back to 1200m on the course proper suits and he looks the leader.
Race 4. (15:21) Frank Frenkenfield Maiden Plate 1050m
12 Miss Wahoo (Bet Now: $1.30) is another filly first up in this race, this one trained by Tony McEvoy. She went down the Blue Diamond path in the Autumn and ran well but didn’t quite measure up. Been given a really good break and to my eye she trialled well on the Parks track a tick under three weeks back.
5 Woodcroft (Bet Now: $1.50) is the interesting runner for mine. Ryan Balfour trains this four year old, who is on debut here, and the fact he debuts in a metro maiden may suggest he has ability. Trailled at Morphettville on December 7 and won quite nicely to my eye. Keen to see what he does against some nice types.
9 Boundary Girl (Bet Now: $8.00) is also first up, this five year old a mare a stablemate of Shuck. She debuted on the Parks track over 1000m back in January 2015 so has clearly had issues but with these runners first up off a long break, I think they should always be respected, and she did trial well leading in for sure.
Race 5. (16:01) AAMI Handicap (70) 1200m
4 Quivers (Bet Now: $10.00) is a mare that is low flying this time in for the David Baylis yard. She ran over this track/distance last time out where she worked home with purpose but had to settle for a narrow second to Gogo Grace. She was four and five wide for the trip there too so the merit in her run was enormous. Definite threat.
8 Devilishly (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained mare who comes through the Gogo Grace race here on December 9 where she sat off the pace and tried hard but was just no match late and had to settle for a close up fourth. Should improve with the run under the belt and senior rider takes over now.
9 Pass The Glass (Bet Now: $16.00) is a talented daughter of Hard Spun that resumes. Her best efforts have come at the provincials in both South Australia and Victoria but first up in town suggests to me there is intent to run well. Not a noted first up performer, but you always have to respect the stable when they come to town.
Race 6. (16:41) Schweppes Handicap (75) 1050m
12 Regal Spur (Bet Now: $7.00) on top. Former Ryan Balfour runner having his first start for the Tony McEvoy yard. His best form should see him win this, and he looks somewhere near that off a couple of ripping trials, placing in both and going about his business quite nicely. Not a noted first up performer, but that may change with the stable switch.
2 Big Effort (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Sharon Hayes trained son of Reward For Effort that resumes. He is blessed with immense talent but the screws upstairs are a bit loose and he can do plenty wrong, hence why the barrier blanket is on to help him at the start because he can be hit and miss. But, he flies fresh and his two trials have been great.
3 Barood (Bet Now: $14.00) is a gutsy sprinter for Sue Murphy who doesn’t know how to run a bad race. He ran over the 1250m on the Parks track last Saturday where he tried hard to reel in Redentes Edge but that horse had it too good on speed. Good record on the course proper, maps well, hard fit and in form.
Race 7. (17:21) Adelaide Galvanising Christmas Handicap 1200m
Hard to ignore 4 Steel Frost (Bet Now: $2.00). Will Clarken tried him out as a 1400m-1600m horse, but after failing in the Seymour Cup, he was freshened up and ran in the Marion where he was backed off the map and under a lovely ride from Pannell, he was far too good. Think he can only improve and is clearly the one to beat.
1 Casino Wizard (Bet Now: $4.00) was the real eye catcher in the Marion. He came back home after a mixed prep in Melbourne but his effort was outstanding, finishing off with real purpose under the big weight when second to Steel Frost. If the breaks go his way, he can definitely turn the tables. Key threat.
3 Bay Road (Bet Now: $17.00) is on the quick back up for the Richard Jolly team after racing over 1000m on the Parks track last Saturday where he sat near a fast speed and tried hard but just died on the run behind Itz Invincible. He was three weeks between runs there, so he should improve. Enough to win? I doubt so, but one for multiples.
Race 8. (18:01) The Junction Handicap (64) 1200m
Taking a chance on 10 Vivaldi’s Quest (Bet Now: $5.00). He was too bad to be true last time out over this track/distance behind Gogo Grace when hard in the market and seemingly having a nice run off the pace. Nothing found in the Stewards Report, so it’s a bit of an unknown, but obviously he has overcome whatever it was otherwise stable wouldn’t run. Best form should see him go close.
6 Rupture (Bet Now: $7.00) is the best horse in the race, but he is a bit suspect when it comes to wanting to produce it. Hasn’t raced for over six weeks since finishing down the track over 1550m on the Parks track behind Wasabi Bob, who has run well since to frank the form. He’s hard to trust, but fresh at 1200m suits and the blinkers are back on.
3 Just Kappy (Bet Now: $9.00) is first up for the Brian Mueller team. This gelding hasn’t raced since November 1 at Strathalbyn where he scooted along in front and just felt the pinch late behind Il Gattino. He does race well on the fresh side and despite an awful record at the track, he maps okay and gets the claim for Victor Wong.
