Eight races have been set down for Ascot this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:48) Amelia Park Lamb Handicap 1000m
Hoping Jade McNaught just fires out 1 Fire And Rain (Bet Now: $2.80) and lets him run. Took on the older horses down the Pinajrra straight a fortnight ago where he was near the speed throughout and battled away quite well when a narrow third to Dam Ready. Back to his own age, he should fire over to lead and with the claim, he does look very well in at the weights.
3 Braggadocios (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Lindsey Smith trained three year old who is still a maiden after two starts but has shown clear talent each time he has stepped out. The form out of both of the maidens has been quite good. Resumes without a trial, 1000m is likely to be short of his best but I think he has enough quality to figure in the finish if they go quick in front.
2 Metro Boy (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of City Place for Dan Morton who resumes. This three year old hasn’t raced since September 30 when winning narrowly over 1100m at Northam. Interesting he resumes without a trial but should land on speed comfortably according to the speed map and I like him fresh at the five furlongs. Just has to handle the class rise.
Race 2. (16:28) David Grays Aglink Plate 1100m
1 Miss West Coast (Bet Now: $1.75) looks the one to beat. Trevor Andrews trains this filly, who resumed over 1000m here three weeks ago where she sat on speed with no cover and had to chase from a fair way out but her class got her home in the end, edging clear late. If she’s come on from that and hasn’t gone backwards, she should be too good for them once again.
8 Tajmali (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Dion Luciani trained filly debuting. This daughter of Galah has had two trials in readiness for her first start, both coming over 400m at Belmont. First one was back in October before being tipped out. Back now and trialled on Monday. Inside gate and Parnham booked looks a good lead. Just want to see what the market does with her.
3 Eye Of The Day (Bet Now: $4.50) is a daughter of Blackfriars for Paul Jordan who debuted over 1200m at Pinjarra a fortnight ago where she was 1/1 in the run, keen, presented at the right time but just didn’t quite on with the job when a narrow third to Bubaroochy. I reckon with that run under the belt, she’ll be better off, and back to 1100m looks ideal for her.
Race 3. (17:08) Devils Lair Handicap (72+) 2100m
Happy to butter up on 3 Press The Petal (Bet Now: $8.00) for Adam Durrant. Ran at Pinjarra two weeks ago where Parnham gave the mare every possible chance I thought but just had no answers for the finale produced by the in form mare and stablemate American Joy. That was her first run in a month so she should have room to improve and rates highly against these.
2 American Joy (Bet Now: $2.60) is a daughter of Americain for Adam Durrant who is in career best form. 11/10 steer from Pike got her the win here two back over 1800m before stepping up to ten furlongs at Pinjarra where Pike produced a 12/10 steer and the mare showed a nice turn of foot late to get the win. She can improve and does have the zip in the legs.
7 Discoville (Bet Now: $20.00) is on the quick back up for Neville Parnham after racing last Saturday over 1800m here where he just didn’t have the turn of foot to go with them but battled away well in defeat behind the in form Let’s Twist. Better suited at the staying trip for mine, like he’s on the quick turnaround. Not sure he can win but can add value to exotics.
Race 4. (17:43) Iron Jack Handicap (1MW) 1200m
4 Carocapo (Bet Now: $2.35) is an above average five year old for Jim Taylor who was hard in the market when resuming over 1200m here three weeks ago, his first run in two years. Led and run along in front, giving a really good kick but his condition just gave out late when fourth to Beat The Devil, beaten 1.5L. Should come right on from that and hopefully will be stronger at the end.
She rises a bit in grade/depth but happy to give a look to 6 Miss Swindle (Bet Now: $6.50) for Simon Miller. She ran over 1200m at York last time where she sat on speed throughout and despite being challenged late, she found plenty under pressure and scored a narrow but impressive win. Ran well here the start prior and with luck in the run, I think she can measure up.
5 Checkers (Bet Now: $15.00) is an interesting runner. Monica Tyson trains this bloke, who was very good in a couple of runs to start the prep, placing first up here before going to Northam and running a game fourth to Citichant in a race where the form has been good. Been given a little break and the tick over trial at Belmont on Monday looked quite good to the eye. 1200m fresh tells there is miles in the legs to run well.
Race 5. (18:20) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Handicap (66+) 1000m
6 Kaapander (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Peter Farrell trained gelding who has teased to win a race throughout the prep but is yet to greet the judge. Ran over 1100m here three weeks ago where he sat back and wide throughout but got to the outside and worked home well late in the piece behind Disruptive in a bunched finish. He’s going well. Just needs to put a win on the board.
9 King’s Authority (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Stephen Miller trained four year old who makes his WA debut. Was formerly trained by Mick Price and did show a bit of promise when racing in Melbourne but just wasn’t quite measuring up at metro level. Now in WA, he resumes at 1000m and his trial a few weeks back at Lark Hill looked quite good to the eye.
I think 1000m on the bending track should suit the Chris Gangemi trained 10 Shackleton (Bet Now: $4.40). He ran down the straight at Pinjarra a fortnight ago where he kept coming but couldn’t quite get the job done when fourth to Captain Stirling. Only missed a place once in six runs at Ascot, and if he can get the sit just off the speed, with clear air, he’ll take some beating.
Race 6. (18:55) Crown Sports Bar Handicap (72+) 1200m
11 Beat The Devil (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Simon Miller trained gelding who is racing in a real purple patch at the moment. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where he took on easier company but had the right run just off the speed and once he was clicked up, he pounced and was impressive. More depth here, but have to strike while the iron is hot for mine.
He’s been costly this time has 9 Forceful (Bet Now: $3.80) but the combo of a poor racing pattern and bad luck has brought about his undoing. Nightmare if you were on three weeks back in the race won by Disruptive. Had no room in the straight and pretty much went around as if it was a barrier trial, seemingly with plenty in the tank. The race pattern is the concern, but no doubt his motor is the best of anything engaged here. Just needs the breaks to go his way.
5 Disruptive (Bet Now: $6.00) is a few weeks between runs for the Lindsey Smith stable after winning over 1100m here last time out where he got a very soft time of it in front and rightfully kicked on to score. Won’t get it as easy this time around but he doesn’t need to get a picnic to win. He can fight for it, as we saw on a couple of occasions last campaign.
Race 7. (19:30) Australia Day Trophy (78+) 1500m
Hoping that class can come to the fore via 5 Come Play With Me, (Bet Now: $4.60), a quality four year old resuming for Adam Durrant. This bloke hasn’r raced since the Winter where he took all before him, ending his campaign with a couple of Listed wins at Belmont. Whatever he does here, I’m sure he will improve on, but he’s got the class/quality to figure in the finish.
2 Fontainebleu (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Lindsey Smith trained mare who is in ripping form. Ran over 1800m here last Saturday where she controlled things beautifully in front under Smith and she was never really looking like getting beat. Interesting she comes back to 1500m, but has class and if she can land near the speed without doing too much, she’ll prove hard to beat.
4 Red Army (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Team Williams trained gelding who had trialled up well prior to resuming in the Mandurah Cup at Pinjarra where he got a fair way back in the run in an on pace dominated affair and he didn’t quite finish it off well enough behind Wrinkly. Unbeaten second up and I think he’ll be much better suited at Ascot. Definite improver I’m sure.
Race 8. (20:05) Mrs Mac's Handicap (66+) 1400m
Happy to side with 2 One Short (Bet Now: $9.00). Steve Wolfe trains this bloke, who ran over 1500m at Pinjarra a fortnight ago where you could make a case he should have finished much closer. Just had no luck in the straight when seemingly having something left in the tank behind Fair Sonari. Hopefully we can get an each way price to find out if last start was indeed lucky or is he just battling.
6 Invisible Pro (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Simon Miller trained gelding who can mix his form but the version of him is certainly good enough to figure in the finish. Ran over 1500m at Pinjarra two weeks ago where he had a nice sit near the speed and fought on quite well in defeat when second to Fair Sonari. Good record at Ascot, handy track/distance stats and as said before, his best version is good enough to beat these.
1 Touch Of Silver (Bet Now: $7.50) is a handy middle distance gelding for the Adam Durrant stable that resumes. This bloke is better suited at 1600m+, but he’s got enough talent on the board to figure in the finish if he’s right. Five time winner at Ascot and his two trials leading in have been quite good to the eye. Interesting to see what the market does with him.
