Anzac Day racing in Sydney heads to Randwick on Tuesday for an eight race program with some good depth early on in the program. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:40) : Passchendaele Plate 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Membership (Bet Now: $7.50) on top for me in a tough fillies race. Formerly with Michael Freedman but is now with Team Hawkes. Had one run for Freedman, which came at Warwick Farm where he ran a distant third to the talented Debonairly. Trial win was sharp enough and I think she’s the safe way to go here.
Big Danger: 6 Madonnica (Bet Now: $5.50) was unwanted in betting when resuming over 900m at Newcastle and while she didn’t win, I still thought she ran a pretty solid race when third to Silence, who looks a well above average youngster for Team Snowden. Up to 1200m and gate one are big ticks, and I think she’ll lead quite comfortably.
Long Shot: 12 Seaglass (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Sebring filly on debut for the Snowden camp. This chestnut has trialled twice this prep in readiness for her first day at the races, the latest resulting in a solid half length win over 1030m at Rosehill. Been given a good grounding and stable are flying with their youngsters.
Race Two (13:15) : Light Horse Brigade Plate 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Kookabaa (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Chris Waller trained colt who has been quite good in two career outings to date, both of which coming at Warwick Farm. Last start he was caught wide no cover on the speed and fought on quite well I thought when a narrow second to Devolving. Hard fit and Angland sticks. Ticks the boxes for me.
Big Danger: 9 Korma (Bet Now: $5.50) is the big watch here. Godolphin youngster that resumes after just one run, which came in the Golden Gift where he ran well despite racing greenly behind Serena Bay in what has turned out to be a pretty good form race. Two trials leading in have been great and he only has to overcome the sticky draw to look the winner.
Long Shot: 10 Military Academy (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Snitzel colt on debut for the Chris Waller yard. He has had two trials to prepare for his debut, both coming at Rosehill, and both times he has looked pretty good without going overboard. I think he will get better with age/time, but he could surprise here on debut at odds.
Race Three (13:50) : Brigadier William Grant Handicap 1400m:
Back Me: 3 Yeah Bravo (Bet Now: $7.00) clearly on top. He did an enormous job first up at Newcastle given he was back near last in a slowly run race and when the leader is running 33.5 for the final 600m, backmarkers had no chance. He has the run under the belt and I think he is the one to beat for sure.
Big Danger: 1 Polemic (Bet Now: $2.90) is a talented Godolphin gelding that is first up here. Ran four times during the Spring and while he didn’t break the maiden tag he ran well, mostly in town. 1400m is an ideal starting point for the prep and I like what I have seen from this bloke at the trials. Big threat.
Long Shot: 8 Lucky Tiger (Bet Now: $4.00) was unwanted in betting when racing over the Warwick Farm last time out but he nearly defied, only going down to Sweet Adaline by a lip after doing all the work on speed. He is hard fit so back to 1400m is no issue, and given how chopped out this track is, the 1400m will feel like a mile.
Race Four (14:30) : Anzac Appeal Cup 2000m:
Back Me: If 2 Floodlight (Bet Now: $6.00) is going to be a Stakes/Group l horse, he has to be putting this field away and I think he will. Really caught the eye in the Doncaster Prelude but then really struggled on the bottomless track in the Neville Sellwood. Much better than that and he can bounce back hard here in a thin race.
Big Danger: 3 Life Less Ordinary (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Chris Waller import who made his Australian debut over 1800m at Caulfield a tick over two weeks back and to the eye, he was very impressive, settling off the pace before coming wide and producing a powerful finishing burst. I don’t think the race was strong, but you always have to respect imports that win fresh.
Long Shot: 1 Slow Pace (Bet Now: $14.00) is the best horse in the race, but he has a few different versions of himself. The ugly one came last time out in the JRA Plate but he was last and nothing made ground for most of the program. He draws to get a lovely run from the gate and the claim for King is a big tick.
Race Five (15:05) : Stewart Griffin Memorial Handicap 1400m:
Back Me: 5 So Splendid (Bet Now: $4.40) is the big watch here. Chris Waller trained mare that ran over 1400m at Newcastle last time out and you could make a case that she nearly should have won when fourth to Ardanza. Badly held up in the straight when appearing to have plenty to offer. Randwick 1400m looks perfect and the blinkers go on for the first time.
Big Danger: 7 Duchess Pedrille (Bet Now: $3.20) on top for me here and with a bit of confidence. Ron Quinton trained mare who has had three career outings to date and has been quite good at each outing in some pretty handy races which have turned out to be good form references. Trial wins leading in have been sharp and she draws to receive the run of the race.
Long Shot: 8 Emma Jane (Bet Now: $8.00) was completely unwanted in the market when resuming at Wyong a tick under three weeks back but to her credit she stuck on well behind subsequent metro winner White Moss after covering ground throughout. Should press forward here from the wide gate and the claim for King is a big help.
Race Six (15:40) : Battle Of Messines Handicap (72) 1400m:
Back Me: Pretty keen here on 6 Vaniloquio (Bet Now: $4.80). Former Hong Kong galloper that has had a couple of preps down under for Clarry Conners and he has been a very consistent conveyance. Sat wide no cover throughout last Wednesday at Wyong but he toughed it out strongly and was the best on the line. He handles a wet track, he draws well, McEvoy sticks…ticks alot of boxes.
Big Danger: 9 Denzil (Bet Now: $5.00) is a handy gelding for the David Pfieffer team who has been pretty good this time in, winning a couple of races before going to Warwick Farm where he had to race and make his move nearer the inside, which probably wasn’t the spot to be that day when third to Pirate Ben. Blinkers come off now, on the minimum and Brown rides.
Long Shot: 2 Skillful (Bet Now: $6.00) was completely unwanted in betting when resuming at Canterbury on Easter Monday but he was an eye catcher late, making up nice ground to finish four lengths off Love Me Baby. Wet track is the issue with him, but off that encouraging fresh return, I think he can run a cheeky race here.
Race Seven (16:15) : Beersheba Handicap (72) 1000m:
Back Me: 6 Blowing Kisses (Bet Now: $2.50) looks one of the best bets on the eight race card here. John Thompson trained filly who could not have been any more impressive first up at Wyong when overcoming trouble in the straight and savaging the line without being fully extended. Looks very promising and I am confident she can get the job done here.
Big Danger: 8 Athena Lass (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Victorian visitor, this filly trained by the Hayes/Dabernig team. This filly has been okay this time out without winning, but I will say she has contested much stronger races than this. The big key for her is getting onto a wet track because her lone wet run was on a heavy at the Valley and she handled it nicely there. Avdulla booked also.
Long Shot: 5 Minnesota (Bet Now: $9.50) is the watch horse here. Resumes for Gwenda Markwell after a 290 day break. Hasn’t raced since finishing down the track this track/distance during the Winter behind Arise Augustus. She has a very good fresh record and comes here off the back of no trials. Might be worth watching the market.
Race Eight (16:50) : Last Post Handicap (67) 1200m:
Back Me: Taking the gamble and having a speck each way in 10 Rosettas Whey (Bet Now: $13.00). This mare trained by Gerald Ryan hasn’t set the world on fire in recent times but she may get conditions to suit here to run a cheeky one. Ran fourth over 1300m at Hawkesbury last time out and I think on a soft track, beyond 1200m is too far. 1200m here looks ideal, she gets weight relief and looks the leader, and a soft one at that.
Big Danger: 2 No Interest (Bet Now: $9.50) is a quality mare that is second up here for Jason Coyle off the back of an encouraging first up effort at Canberra where she got a mile back in the run but closed off with purpose late to run fourth to Man Of Peace. She ran well second up last time in, draws a good gate and gets the claim for Rachel King.
Long Shot: 11 Midnight Ride (Bet Now: $21.00) has been pretty good in three runs back from a break for the Gwenda Markwell camp. Won well fresh on his home track at Kembla Grange before bumping into two sticky tracks at Goulburn and Kembla respectively. 24 days between runs, and he does tend to run best with fresh legs. Wouldn’t rule him out.
