An eight race card has been assembled for Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out four metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:05) UBET Handicap (70) 1508m
2 Approach Discreet (Bet Now: $1.55) is a Darren Weir trained son of Dawn Approach who has had two career outings. Eye catching debut at Cranbourne when third to Tavisan before racing at Sandown last Wednesday where he produced a lovely finale from the back to score a sharp maiden win and defy a betting drift. Finds a very winnable race.
He’s not beating much but I am liking the way 1 Just Rolling is going about his business. Debuted with a solid win in a maiden at Gawler prior to racing over 1300m on the Parks track where he did not travel at any stage but somehow picked himself up the last furlong and surged hard to grab the win. Off that win, the 1508 should be no issue.
5 Caraluisa (Bet Now: $4.00) is a daughter of Rebel Raider for the Macdonald/Gluyas team who comes through the Just Rolling race over 1300m on the Parks track last time where she tried very hard but just couldn’t quite get the job done when a narrow third to the McEvoy runner. Bred to eat up a trip and hopefully gets firmer footing.
Race 2. (13:45) Twilight Races @ Morphettville Dec 14 Maiden Plate 1100m
I thought whatever horse the Hayes/Dabernig elected to run, it’s the one to beat. They’ve gone with 8 Cross Legend (Bet Now: $3.30), a Sebring filly who is first up. Debuted at the Valley where she didn’t seem entirely happy around the circuit behind Sanctimonious but that field looked quite strong on paper. Jump outs have been good, happy to be with her.
3 Galahad Guru (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of Camelot having his first start for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. This bloke trialled well behind a city winner in Chevite last year before being tipped out. Trialled at Gawler a couple of weeks back and to my eye looked to move very well in running second. Showed gate speed, so should hold a good spot from the inside barrier and is a definite threat.
6 Surreal Image (Bet Now: $9.00) is an Akeed Mofeed gelding on debut for Richard Jolly. He ran in a Gawler trial on August 10 where he looked to travel well on speed and wasn’t knocked about in the straight when a close up third to a couple of promising gallopers. Looks to be a bit of depth to this maiden but I think he can measure up.
Race 3. (14:21) Terry Howe Printing Handicap (86) 1050m
He rises in grade, but he loves a challenge does 6 Barood (Bet Now: $9.00) so I’ll go his way. He is four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where looked beat several times in the straight but he showed tremendous fight in the straight when challenged to cling on and get the win. Love the way he goes about it and happy to be in his corner.
3 One More Daisy (Bet Now: $4.20) is a seven year old mare having her first run for Phillip Stokes after formerly being with the Francis/Kent team. This girl contested some very good races during the Adelaide Carnival where she placed behind in separate races behind classy types in Desert Lashes and Sprightly Lass. Strong trial win a couple of weeks back at Gawler and can sprint well fresh.
8 Port Vale (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Stuart Gower trained gelding that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since May 19 during the Carnival where he was four wide throughout but despite that torrid run, he did a huge job in defeat when a close up fourth to Bord De Gain. No trials, but always have to be on guard with this stable and their resuming gallopers.
Race 4. (14:56) Thirsty Camel Cup Lawn Party Dec 21 Handicap (64) 1050m
9 More Than Exceed (Bet Now: $3.40) is a son of More Than Ready resuming for the Stokes team. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Autumn Carnival where he finished a tiring third to Not A Single Cent in the VRC Sires at Flemington. Trialled well enough behind Sunlight to my eye and though he might want 1200m, he’s got the brilliance to win this.
4 Splashette (Bet Now: $2.70) looks a leading threat. Jarrod McLean trains this mare, who comes through the Lightning over this track/distance where she was far from disgraced I thought behind Nature Strip and that form has been franked with Sunlight getting the job done. Back to this level with the claim, she’s very likeable.
2 White Kaps (Bet Now: $11.00) has certainly got the talent to beat these but gee he can be hot and cold. He ran over this track/distance four weeks ago where he got back and didn’t come on at all behind Barood. Been given the freshen up and he is a horse who does tend to race best on the fresh side. Could be a definite improver.
Race 5. (15:36) Irish Raceday Sep 1 Handicap (70) 2008m
The trip is a little niggle, but in terms of upside and ability, 6 Mitrust (Bet Now: $3.70) is the one. Richard Laming trains this son of Trusting, who ran over the mile at Sandown just under three weeks back and showed good grit late when challenged to get the win, beating Hell On Earth, who won here recently, so the form reads well and the claim for MacFarlane is a big tick.
8 Super Swoop (Bet Now: $2.80) is on the seven day back up after racing at this track/distance last Saturday where I thought Raquel Clark gave the Casino Prince gelding every chance and he surged hard late but the well backed Ayers Rock proved too good right on the peg. Like he is on the quick turnaround and rates highly.
12 Sasun (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Barry Brook trained gelding who is over three weeks between runs since racing over 1800m here where he looked a near good thing on paper and Krystal Bishop rode the horse accordingly, rounding them up from the turn and eventually putting them away late. Has run well up to 2100m before so the 2008m here certainly no issue.
Race 6. (16:16) Fleuirieu Milk Company Handicap (75) 1200m
6 Callisto Girl (Bet Now: $4.80) looks a solid each way gamble for mine. This girl trialled up very well prior to resuming over 1000m on the Parks track three weeks ago where she just looked a touch big in condition and ran accordingly, running out of puff late when fourth to Akkacan. Should come right on from that and has an excellent second up record.
7 Masipag (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Ryan Balfour trained mare who has been quite consistent of late and finally put another win on the board last time over 1200m at Gawler with a pretty dominant display under a lovely steer from Jamie Kah. Has to do it in town now but the way she won last time, confident she can.
5 Amberdi (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Sue Jaensch trained mare who has had three runs this prep and has been outstanding each time. First two starts resulted in sharp wins, each time being well backed. Then raced over 1250m on the Parks track five weeks ago and surged hard late but just found Modulate a touch too good on the day, and that horse has won again since. Definite threat.
Race 7. (16:56) Hughes Limousines Handicap (86) 1600m
7 Snitzepeg (Bet Now: $1.95) looks the winner. Darren Weir trains this four year old, who hasn’t raced since the Gold Reef at Caulfield four weeks ago when Ben Allen rode the gelding a treat, giving him plenty of clear air early and his class came to the fore. Gets run of the race from the gate and down in the weights, very likeable.
10 Modulate (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Richard Jolly trained gelding who is in ripping form at the moment. Took on three rivals on August 4 on the Parks track where he led them up and gave a really good kick on the turn, fighting hard and fending off Embecee Lil. Not quite as dynamic on the course proper, but the way he is going, hard to ignore.
3 Temps Voleur (Bet Now: $10.00) has done a fab job since joining the Chris Bieg team, winning several races for the stable. Last start saw him lead throughout over the 1550m on the Parks track and bolted up under a lovely steer from Justin Huxtable. Great record on the course proper, he’ll be on speed and giving a great sight.
Race 8. (17:35) AAMI Spring Carnival Handicap (70) 1200m
1 Easy Beast (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Richard Laming trained gelding who hasn’t raced for five weeks since doing a stack of work to find the lead at Doomben and dropped out badly to finish tailed off last behind Winter Bride. He has a really good record at Morphettville and if he’s anywhere near his best form, he’ll take some beating.
4 Zalmona (Bet Now: $5.50) looks a key threat. Peter Blanch trains this gelding who is third up here. Resumed with a narrow second to Barood prior to racing over 1000m on the Parks track a fortnight ago where he just looked a touch flat to the eye when fourth to All About Nicci. Be very aware of the third up bounce back.
8 Sawaiki (Bet Now: $14.00) is a well bred son of More Than Ready for Lloyd Kennewell who resumed over 1200m on the course proper a few weeks ago and stuck to the task pretty well and got a definite pass mark for mine when third to Choisborder, who would probably start fav here. Is a second up winner and has placed two from five here.
