Queensland metro racing this Saturday heads to the Sunshine Coast where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:48) Mcgrath Buderim Mdn Plate 1400m
I’ll take a punt on 11 Youngblood (Bet Now: $4.60), who makes his QLD debut for Tony Gollan. First up and 1400m fresh tells me enough work has been put in for a decent showing. Trialled at Doomben on Tuesday and looked pretty good to my eye in running second under no real pressure. Market will be the guide, but he looks the most progressive.
16 Rozeira (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Chris Munce trained filly that resumed at Doomben two weeks ago where she had the A1 run in transit just behind the speed and was out in time to win but clearly no match for Musicmaker, who was too good from the front. Horrible gate, so not sure what Huxtable does, but on form, one of the hardest to beat.
13 Stonefish (Bet Now: $16.00) is one that appears value at nearly $20. Ran over this track/distance last time out where she got back to near last in the run and worked home strongly when a close up fourth to Federal Agent. Has had 28 previous outings to break the maiden tag so couldn’t back her to win, but including in exotics.
Race 2. (12:23) Sunshine Coast Daily Mdn Plate 1200m
9 Palladas (Bet Now: $4.50) looks the most obvious. Aquis colt for Tony Gollan that debuted here at the midweeks where he got back in the run before saving ground, surging hard late to just miss out on the win when second to Uncomplicated. Off that, extra ground should be ideal for him and is the pony to bet on against these.
11 Better Get Set (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Steve O’Dea trained Better Than Ready filly that had trialled up quite well prior to resuming on a bog track here when wide no cover throughout and battling away pretty well in defeat behind Zingalong. Think she’ll be much better suited on firmer footing and up to 1200m, she can be dangerous.
4 Better Lad (Bet Now: $31.00) is worth another chance. Had trialled up really well prior to debuting in the Isotope race from two weeks ago when four and five wide throughout and just couldn’t get involved at all behind the Gollan juvenile. Horror draw, but gets the blinkers on and is on the home track, so just needs luck from the gate.
Race 3. (12:58) Hampers To Go Hcp 1000m
7 Isotope (Bet Now: $1.45) looks well above average and should make it 2/2 here. Debuted two weeks ago at Doomben over 1110m and was stunning in the way she spanked her rivals. Did she beat much? No, but the clock said she was impressive and the ten length margin was what the eye saw. Back to 1000m and a bigger track, with more depth, is the query, but she’s on par with Rothfire as being the most impressive juvenile in Queensland I’ve seen this season.
1 Gotta Kiss (Bet Now: $2.90) is the class runner of the field and that will carry her a long way here. This Steve O’Dea filly hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions when finding that class of horse a bit rich. In saying that, the form out of it is A1 with Farnan and Away Game, plus King’s Legacy, coming out of it. Trial on Tuesday was quite good and 1000m looks her ideal trip.
2 Kavak (Bet Now: $14.00) does look the value outside the top two. Talented colt for Chris Munce that resumes, having not raced since the Magic Millions when down the track behind Away Game, being outclassed. Blinkers are off for the resumption, he’s trialled well leading in and a bit surprised the market gap is so big between he and Gotta Kiss.
Race 4. (13:33) Ross Maclean Fellowship (bm78) 2200m
I reckon he’s worth a throw at the stumps at the big odds here 6 Monaco Snob (Bet Now: $34.00). To me, he is crying out for ground and a big track, and that’s the set up here he gets here. All three runs back from a break have been at Doomben and while he has been held each time, the runs haven’t been too bad. Hard fit now, out to a staying trip, down in the weights, spacious surroundings, he’s worth an each way ticket.
2 Fastnet Cyclone (Bet Now: $4.00) has been up a little while but continues to race at a pretty good level. Latest run came two weeks ago at Doomben over 2000m when near the speed and fighting on pretty well in defeat when third to Populist. Has won up to 2400m so 2200m here is no issue and is trained on the track.
1 Galtero (Bet Now: $4.80) has been disappointing this time in for Tony Gollan but he does have a good record at the Sunny Coast so giving him one more chance. Comes through the Populist race from two weeks ago and yes, he was a bit unlucky at a crucial stage, but he had his chance to finish off better. Bigger track, up in trip, one last look.
Race 5. (14:08) Pelican Motors Serv. Centre-c6 1600m
Going with the class, which lies with 7 A Man To Match (Bet Now: $6.50). Resumed over 1350m at Doomben two weeks back where he was near last throughout but not everything went his way in the straight when wanting to build the revs and should have finished closer. Big track, 1600m, enormous upside, has class and is thrown in at the weights.
Contender or pretender time for 13 Profit (Bet Now: $1.90). If he’s the good horse that we think, or hope, that he is, he has to be putting this field away. To the eye, he had every chance at Doomben two weeks ago, but Shalwa is a mare that is flying and she got her own way in front, making it hard for those from off the speed, including Profit, to get past her. The key for Profit is a big track and more ground, which he gets here. I just can’t back him with confidence.
Bigger track and 1600m are two big ticks for 6 Tokoriki Lad (Bet Now: $15.00), who ran in the Shalwa race from a fortnight ago, his first run in around a month, and while he was never a winning threat to the stablemate, he did find the line okay, suggesting further and a bigger track will suit, plus a more genuine tempo, so for mine, he’s a knockout chance.
Race 6. (14:43) Race Zone Racing Supplies Plte 1600m
See no reason to jump off 2 Stampe (Bet Now: $2.90). Was on him two weeks ago over 1350m at Doomben where he led, got complete control, and Huxtable turned it into a 400m dash for cash, with the son of Whittington proving far too good. Little unknown at 1600m, but should lead comfortably again and prove hard to run down.
1 Guntantes (Bet Now: $5.50) is the interesting one. Four weeks between runs since racing over 1350m at Doomben where he ran an absolute shocker behind Command’N’Conquer and it was said by Rob Heathcoate that he would spell. But he’s had the little freshen up and looked to trial well on Tuesday, so a definite market watch.
5 Ziemba (Bet Now: $12.00) should be suited up to the mile and on the bigger track. Not much went his way first up behind Okeechobee before backing up a week later and pulled up with excuses behind Stampe. Gets out to his ideal trip now and I think from a decent gate, hard fit now, he can sit nearer the speed and bounce back hard.
Race 7. (15:18) Number One Quality Homes Hcp 1400m
Lovely race here for 4 Baccarat Baby (Bet Now: $2.45). Was keen on this mare when she resumed at Doomben two weeks ago but just couldn’t dash when required but picked up and surged hard late to just miss out on picking up the well backed Mishani Hustler. On her home track, fitter, up to 1400m…just all points to her bouncing back.
I’m very interested in the Tony Gollan trained 3 Silvera (Bet Now: $5.50). He well and truly was facing D-Day in the Members Cup several weeks back at Doomben and he passed with flying colours, really charging to the line late and winning well. He’s got the right form around him. What I do find interesting is that he is first up at 1400m with 1400m-1600m being his ideal, so my thinking is that he’s forward in condition, especially after the trial on Tuesday.
The knockout chance here is 11 Victory Eight (Bet Now: $46.00). He returns to the Sunny Coast, his home track, and really, the only track he races well at, which is what we saw first up behind Gypsy Toff. Last couple of runs have been below par but there have been excuses. Gets a good set up here I think to run a positive race at odds.
Race 8. (15:53) Tab (bm78) 1400m
10 Fasano (Bet Now: $2.60) is the pony to bet on. He’s been outstanding since joining Rob Heathcoate from David Payne, winning 2/2, the latest being a fortnight back at Doomben when finishing off with real purpose late to get the job done. Both runs have come at 1200m and for mine, he’ll eat up 1400m, so hard to beat against these.
8 Red Chase (Bet Now: $8.00) can be a bit of a nutter for Desleigh Forster but he has showed enough to suggest there is a decent engine under the hood. Comes through the Shalwa race from two weeks ago at Doomben and I thought he stuck to the task pretty well despite seemingly having every chance when third, beaten 0.6L. He’s knocking on the door and finds a winnable race here.
5 Brains (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Tony Gollan trained galloper that had trialled up okay prior to resuming at Doomben three weeks ago where he paraded like he would need the run and that is how it panned out behind stablemate Macewen. He does seem to get better as the prep goes on, so perhaps one more run, but include in multiples because he does have quality when he’s right.
Race 9. (16:28) Henzells Agency Hcp 1000m
3 Tambo’s Mate (Bet Now: $3.60) has to be given another chance. Resumed two weeks ago at Doomben and yes, he was beaten, but far from disgraced I thought in running a close up fourth given he did a power of work to get on speed and just tired late. Gets back to his home track, fitter and has class, so he can easily bounce back.
2 Guard Of Honour (Bet Now: $11.00) is a veteran sprinter for Kelly Schweida who comes through the Mishani Hustler race mentioned above from a fortnight ago. He had the sweet sit in behind and was there to win. First run in seven weeks, his condition just gave out late. He sits off a good speed here and does have a good record at this track.
Not sure he wins, but for multiples, I’d be including 12 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $21.00) for Barry Lockwood. Attempted to lead throughout two weeks back at Doomben over 1200m and gave a good kick but couldn’t see it through when third to Fasano. I think 1200m sees him right out so like him back to 1000m. Include in exotics.
