The two day Albury Carnival concludes this Friday where it is Albury Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:00) Twin City Truck Centre Mdn 1175m
11 Miss Hoff (Bet Now:Β $2.70) on top in the opener. WaterBott trained filly that resumes, having not raced since her debut in the 2020 Gimcrack at Randwick when far from disgraced in defeat behind Enthaar. Has had a long time off, but two trials to get ready, gate one with early speed, she’ll take beating, but clearly the market will be a good guide.
14 Smarter Than You (Bet Now:Β $5.00) should appreciate the rise to 1175m. Ran over 1000m at Goulburn last time out where she got a suck run on the fence before getting the inside split and dashing strongly, just missing out on the win. Winkers on, rise in trip, she commands respect.
Mitch Beer, like most, loves The Simpsons from Seasons 2-9 and one of the great episodes was Joe Quimby’s nephew, Freddie, having a crack at the French waiter and how he pronounced Chowder. That’s the explanation for the name of 5 Chowdah (Bet Now: $18.00). He’s had three trials to get ready for start one and has got better with each hit out. Blinkers first time for start one on the home track for Cup Day, it says to me there is intent.
Race 2. (13:40) Carlton Draught Hcp (c2) 1000m
Pretty keen here on 3 Mojo Music (Bet Now:Β $2.60), who resumes for Andrew Dale. He hasn’t raced since December 11 here when a game second to a pretty handy horse in Scarlet Prince. He went very sharp in a recent Wangaratta jumpout and from the inside gate, he’ll take a power of beating I’d suggest.
2 Lord Domino (Bet Now:Β $3.50) is a Trust In A Gust gelding that resumes. His last run came on December 28 at Yarra Valley when on speed and sticking on okay to run fourth. He does race well on the fresh side and with his racing style, I think he’ll give himself every chance. Market will tell you if he’s ready off a Benalla trial.
8 Openhimup (Bet Now:Β $13.00) is quite hit and miss but his best is good enough to be dangerous. Got a peach from Souquet to win on the Riverside track at Wagga last time, albeit the depth as a whole wasn’t strong, but he was dominant. Good track/distance record and will be strong late despite likely being last in the run.
Race 3. (14:20) Albury Guineas 1400m
I’m with 1 Kelvedon Road (Bet Now:Β $3.90) in what is an ordinary edition of the Guineas. He comes through the Canberra Guineas where he got a fair way back in the run and while he was never a threat, he did make ground and was a pass mark. Back to this level, he’ll take beating.
3 Riddlero (Bet Now:Β $2.50) should appreciate the rise to 1400m. Market wanted him when he resumed over 1200m at Echuca where he got a fair way back in the run but really liked the way he finished his race off when second to Crackhorn. Fitter and up to 1400m, he commands respect.
5 Oh No Mikki (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is a query at 1400m but the depth isn’t strong. Ran over 1200m during the Canberra Carnival where he had the suck run behind the speed and tired late. That was his first run in a few weeks so you’d like to think there is room for improvement. One for multiples.
Race 4. (15:00) Adrian Ledger Memorial (bm66) 2400m
A strong 2400m will be no issue for 4 Lord Tropicana (Bet Now:Β $4.40). Midrace mover over 2200m at Dubbo last time out and in survival of the fittest, he was indeed the fittest and was impressive I thought. 2400m here should be fine and was only third up, so he’s got upside to come.
2 Riding High (Bet Now:Β $5.50), you’d assume, is getting ready for jumps races, but I think he is a capable flat horse, especially in a race like this. He ran a close up fourth in the Towong Cup after settling just behind the speed, battling away okay. Like him up in trip and has plenty of upside compared to most.
7 Saint Henry (Bet Now:Β $10.00) tends to save his best for Albury. Just not sure about him at 2400m. Far from disgraced in the Towong Cup when back in the run, and back at Towong = no chance of winning. Better suited on this track and if the 2400m is okay, he’s in the mix as a first four contender.
Race 5. (15:40) Lexus Of Wodonga Ctry Magic-c3 1500m
2 Toretto (Bet Now:Β $2.10) looks the one to beat in what is a two horse race IMO. Was few weeks between runs and back to 1300m from 1400m when knuckling down strongly to win at Goulburn on a wet track. Gets back up in trip and I do feel he is more effective on firmer footing.
5 Manderboss (Bet Now:Β $2.20) is the only other winning hope. He was given a peach by Pike to win during the Canberra Carnival, letting powerfully from off the speed to win and win with something in reserve. Loses Pike, but Penza is no amateur and maps well from the gate.
7 Decker (Bet Now:Β $10.00) will put himself on speed and give himself every chance. He attempted to lead throughout at Echuca last time out and gave a solid kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Fiorente’s Girl. Last bit will test, but he’ll give a sight. One for wider exotics.
Race 6. (16:20) Hutchinson Civil (bm58) 1175m
9 Miss Verbier (Bet Now:Β $5.00) has an awful gate to overcome but I think she can overcome it and be in the finish. Ran over 1100m at Ararat last time out and was a real closer from the back when second to I Am Ready, working home nicely against the track pattern. If she gets a drag into the race, she’ll take beating.
1 Eurosay (Bet Now:Β $5.50) is knocking on the door to win for Todd Smart. Led and looked home at Goulburn last time but he was nearer the inside and that was the quicksand, tiring late when third to Toretto. I reckon with a more conservative steer, he’ll be more effective and can take this out.
6 Gironde (Bet Now:Β $11.00) isn’t far off a win I feel. He was good late two back at Wagga before finishing down the track on the Riverside track there. Drawn out, but should get decent cover, a drag into the race and be strong late. The record at this track though is a concern.
Race 7. (16:55) Albury Gold Cup 2000m
There is two horses I want to back here. The main bet and I think is a good thing is 3 Harmony Rose (Bet Now:Β $3.50). Backing up from the Epona on Saturday where she failed to let down on a heavy track and she might be the only grey I know that doesn’t go a yard on wet ground. Back on firmer footing, hard fit, she’s clearly the one to beat at her best.
1 Entente (Bet Now:Β $5.00) should welcome the return to this grade after racing in the Ranvet on Saturday where WFA, wet ground…just a horrible set up and he rightfully ran up to that when well and truly down the track behind Montefilia. Much better set up here, he can bounce back.
The horse I want to back is 4 Sikandarabad (Bet Now:Β $9.00). He was beaten a long way in the Ranvet but taking out the first two, both stars, the run from Sikandarabad was full of merit. He’ll love getting on top of the ground and with luck from a tricky gate, he’ll be hard to hold out.
Race 8. (17:30) Flat Knacker 900m
7 Boss Lady Rocks (Bet Now:Β $2.40) looks the straight bat option in the get out. Has been kept on ice, having not raced since January 29 when a strong third over 1000m at The Valley behind Okay To Pay. Has a fab track/distance record and from gate one, she won’t be far away and is hard to beat.
3 Proud Mia (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is a Nick Olive trained mare that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since December 29 when fourth over 1000m at Canberra in an open handicap. Hasn’t had a public trial to get ready but you’d assume has had a jumpout or two at home to get ready. Market will be the guide.
5 Mosscon (Bet Now:Β $11.00) is a daughter of Mossman for David Briedoake that is first up and I think can be dangerous. Hasn’t raced since Moe Cup Day in October on a bottomless track where she failed to pick her feet up. Given a good break and has jumped out well. Should be strong at the end.
