A solid eight race program has been assembled for Belmont on Saturday where it is Belmont Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (13:53) : Tabtouch Plate 1300m:
Back Me: 9 Street Fury (Bet Now: $1.65) clearly gets the nod for me here. This Ben Pearce runner was wide no cover when resuming over 1200m here last Wednesday and was forced wider on the turn but once Pike gave her a click, she showed an electric turn of foot and won quite impressively. Confident she can measure up here.
Big Danger: 2 Kentoo (Bet Now: $10.00) resumed over 1000m here three weeks back and was just run off his legs I thought but I didn’t mind the way he finished off his race when fifth to Illustrious Tycoon. Up to 1300m looks perfect. The worry I have is that he might need one more run. But I’ll trust the stable.
Long Shot: 5 Ouqba Jack (Bet Now: $9.00) debuted in the Street Fury race here last Wednesday and despite starting long odds, he was a real eye catcher late in the piece when running fourth, beaten three lengths, but made up really good ground late. With natural improvement, he can go close here for sure.
Race Two (14:33) : D’Orsogna Handicap (72+) 1000m:
Back Me: Taking a chance on 6 Bombs Away (Bet Now: $9.50). Lindsey Smith trained gelding who can be hit and miss at times, but he is a proven city performer and is a very good first up performer. Four of his five wins have come at Belmont and his trial win at Lark Hill looked sharp to the eye.
Big Danger: 2 It’s It (Bet Now: $5.00) was ridden with real confidence by Randy Tan a fortnight back at this track/distance and that confidence resonated with the horse because he just kept going on speed and spanked his rivals for a sharp win. Creeping up in the weights now, and won’t get it as easy on speed, but he’s hard fit/in form.
Long Shot: 3 Woolibar (Bet Now: $10.00) was a dominant winner two back before racing in the It’s It race mentioned above where he was disappointing on face value but was found to have pulled up lame. Provided he has come through that okay, he can bounce back hard here with the speed engaged.
Race Three (15:13) : Auto Classic BMW Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Veuve De Vega (Bet Now: $6.50) is the very interesting runner for me here and I’ll take the chance on him. He is a quality gelding that resumes for Sean Casey. Stakes performed last time in and was generally always around the mark. Really liked his trial win last week and though zero from two fresh, he’s got the quality.
Big Danger: 4 Karlakee Miss (Bet Now: $5.00) is three weeks between runs since racing against the older horses at this track/distance where she was wide no cover for the trip and tried hard but was beaten by a horse who had a softer run in transit. If that hasn’t busted her, she only has to hold that form to go close here.
Long Shot: 2 Stored Energy (Bet Now: $27.00) is a filly that resumes for Monica Tyson after formerly being with Stan Bates. She was a filly who contested some really good races during the Summer Carnival and was far from disgraced for the most part. Really liked the way she trialled against the older horses here last week and she does have a real liking for Belmont.
Race Four (15:53) : Schweppes Handicap (72+) 1600m:
Back Me: 11 Luke’s Gold (Bet Now: $3.80) gets the nod for me here. On the quick back up after racing last Saturday over 1400m where he got a mile back in the run, back to last in fact, but he really finished off his race with purpose when second to War God. Up to the mile is perfect and the seven day turnaround is fine.
Big Danger: 6 Helms Gate (Bet Now: $3.60) is a stablemate of Luke’s Gold who has winning form next to his name and Glenn Smith rides. He ran over 1400m a fortnight back where Smith rode him a treat and he chased hard to get the win over the very good filly Western Temple. Draws the inside gate, weight relief…ticks alot of boxes.
Long Shot: 10 Hay Magic (Bet Now: $8.00) took on the females over 1400m here two weeks ago and she was a real eye catcher to the eye. Got back to near last in the run before peeling wide and charging home to run a close up fifth. Up to the mile is perfect and she draws to sit much closer in the run.
Race Five (16:28) : Lavazza Handicap (1MW) 1000m:
Back Me: 7 Vandemonian (Bet Now: $6.50) stepped up to Saturday grade three weeks back at this track/distance and he was excellent I thought, charging home from near last to run third to Two Silver Trees. Doesn’t have to get as far back here, and if he can take advantage of gate one, he’ll take some beating.
Big Danger: 1 Forbidden Planet (Bet Now: $9.00) ran down the straight at Pinjarra last time out where he sat on speed near the outside rail and fought on strongly but just missed out when a close up third to Cherie Amour. He’s got a really good record at Belmont and the claim for Kersley helps big time.
Long Shot: 4 Pop Hero (Bet Now: $7.50) was absolutely luckless in the Two Silver Trees race mentioned above. He was first up in that race and just had no luck in the straight when appearing to be bolting. Got out late and was very good in the last 150m. Drawn wide, so he’ll get clear running here and take some beating.
Race Six (17:05) : Perth Racing Twitter Handicap (78+) 1200m:
Back Me: 10 Special Delivery (Bet Now: $3.60) for me but she is running out of chances. At her best, he is a blacktype galloper but he hasn’t really put it together for a little while now. Ran over 1400m here three weeks back and was a flop as a well backed favourite despite a nice run in transit. Giving him another look.
Big Danger: 12 Star Glitter (Bet Now: $10.00) is an absolute ripper for the Parnham yard. There isn’t much of him, but he is always around the mark and busts his gut every start, something that can’t be said about some of these. Ran a beauty behind Majinika here a fortnight back and with a similar run here, he can threaten.
Long Shot: 1 Gigante (Bet Now: $7.50) could be the improver here at odds. He ran over 1000m here two weeks back where I think he just found the distance too short, plus the tempo was clearly against him. Up to 1200m is a big tick for this Jim Taylor galloper and the claim certainly helps his winning claims.
Race Seven (17:45) : WAROA Belmont Guineas 1600m:
Back Me: 6 Western Temple (Bet Now: $7.00) is a quality gelding for Team Williams who was 63 days between runs when racing over 1400m here a fortnight back against the older horses and I really liked his effort when a close up second to Helms Gate. Up to the mile second up looks ideal and Pike rides.
Big Danger: 15 Fontainebleu (Bet Now: $5.00) is a stablemate of the top tip and though she rises sharply in grade, I think she has to be seriously respected here. She ran over 1700m here last Wednesday and though I doubt she beat much, she did end up spanking them and savaged the line, so a fast run mile here will be perfect.
Long Shot: 2 Gatting (Bet Now: $17.00) is the WA Derby winner who comes back to Stakes grade at his own age and while he is better over further, he does have class on his side. Resumed against the older horses over 1200m a fortnight back and was wide no cover throughout plus had young Kersley riding. This horse is better suited with senior hoops so Autier going back on is a big tick.
Race Eight (18:25) : Amelia Park Handicap (66+) 2000m:
Back Me: 10 Scooner (Bet Now: $8.50) is a former Chris Waller trained galloper who has been very good in two WA runs for the Simon Miller yard, both coming at Northam over 1400m and 1600m respectively, each time hitting the line with purpose. Clearly looking for the 2000m which he get now and has upside.
Big Danger: 1 Bergio (Bet Now: $5.50) is an absolute beauty for the Sarah Miller yard. He ran over 2200m here two weeks ago and tried hard in the run and down the entire straight but just lacked the turn of foot to go with a couple and settled for third. Back to 200m is the query, but Pike remains on which is a good lead.
Long Shot: 8 Moonsearch (Bet Now: $27.00) is a handy gelding for the Colin Webster yard who comes through the 1600m Northam race that Scooner contested. Scooner ran second while Moonsearch ran fourth and I thought Moonsearch was very good, closing off his race nicely. Does get a 0.5kg weight swing and has the barrier draw advantage.
