2/4/2016 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben

A strong card of racing will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (13:28) : Millie Wright Handicap (75) 1050m:

Back Me: 4 Lady Jetsetter (Best Odds: $3.10) has been given a four week freshen up since running fifth to I Am Boss over this track/distance after doing too much work on speed. Looks well placed here fresh and will get the run of the race from the gate.
Big Danger: 10 Siliqua (Best Odds: $4.20) creates plenty of interest here. This gelding hasn’t raced since late October when finishing down the track behind Sydney galloper Magic Dallas. No trials leading in, but he is talented when right so watch market moves.
Roughie: 12 Lilly The Filly (Best Odds: $51.00) is a handy mare that resumes for Bruce Hill. Her best form is usually a couple of runs later in the prep, but I haven’t minded her two trials on her home track at the Gold Coast, and if they go silly in front, she’ll finish off better than anything.

Race Two (14:03) : Magic Millions National Sales Handicap 1110m:

Back Me: 1 Spot The Diff (Best Odds: $3.10) is two from two this time in, the latest over 1200m at the Gold Coast where she had to dig deep over the concluding stages to win narrowly but impressively. Looks well placed once again after the claim and is hard fit.
Big Danger: 3 Love Spy (Best Odds: $4.40) is a nippy filly for the Ben Currie who hasn’t raced since winning a QTIS race at the Sunny Coast. No trials, but she is above average and looks a leading contender, but the wide gate is the negative.
Roughie: 2 Endless Days (Best Odds: $14.00) resumed over 1050m here a couple of weeks back and finished off hard out wide to get the job done and break his maiden status. Draws gate one now, so hopefully he won’t be far away and senior rider goes aboard now.

Race Three (14:42) : Hogs Breath Cafe Handicap (75) 2030m:

Back Me: 8 Lord Coconuts (Best Odds: $6.00) ran over the mile here a couple of weeks back and closed off strongly between runners when running fifth to L’Entrecote. The step up to 2000m is a query, but he’ll get back from the wide gate and do no work and if cuddled, he can produce some very good closing sectionals.
Big Danger: 7 Kaiser Franz (Best Odds: $3.30) is becoming too costly to follow for me, but he is a definite winning chance here. The breaks didn’t really go his way last time out over 2200m behind Torbay, not really getting a chance to build up momentum in the straight. If he gets clear running here, he’ll be a threat.
Roughie: 13 Collateral (Best Odds: $17.00) ran third in that Torbay race and he was a little unlucky too. He was about to burst through and dash 250m out but the gap just closed a touch and the horse hesitated, losing precious momentum. Down in the weights once again and is a leading chance.

Race Four (15:22): Love U Lauren Dooley Handicap 1110m:

Back Me: 1 Casual Choice (Best Odds: $6.50) has been given a three week freshen up since winning the Gold Coast Stakes, beating home Sir Moments, who failed with excuses last Saturday. Rises sharply in weight, but he draws a soft gate and back to 1110m is ideal.
Big Danger: 6 Wicked Intent (Best Odds: $3.10) ran in an Open Handicap over 1050m here a fortnight back and was just too nippy for his rivals, largely due to the light weight he had to carry. Doesn’t rise in the weights at all here, and has the speed to take care of the wide gate.
Roughie: 5 Choice Bro (Best Odds: $10.00) ran third to Wicked Intent and closed off strongly from near last to be beaten two lengths. Draws gate one again, so hopefully he can sit closer. If he does, he can turn the tables and strongly challenge the top tip.

Race Five (16:02) : Motorola Handicap (1MW) 1200m:

Back Me: 9 Hazard Bay (Best Odds: $6.00) ran under the lights at the Sunny Coast a couple of weeks back and closed off strongly from behind the tempo to win impressively. Harder here, but gate one and James Orman riding with significant weight relief should see him prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: 2 El Sasso (Best Odds: $3.80) ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and looked a little lost on the home turn but once balanced up, he closed off well to run a close up second to Beatniks. Wide draw is the negative but D Browne rides and he is coming off a recent international major on Buffering.
Roughie: 1 Mahican (Best Odds: $5.50) is the class runner here. He resumed in the Gold Coast Stakes and had the charmed run behind the tempo to run a close up third to Casual Choice and Sir Moments. Had he drawn a better gate, I’d declare him, but the wide draw leaves him here.

Race Six (16:42) : Andrew Groves 40th Birthday Handicap 1350m:

Back Me: 14 Cool Sequence (Best Odds: $11.00) broke his maiden status under the lights at the Sunny Coast a couple of weeks back and would have been a tragedy beaten, but he got clear and burst through to win narrowly but impressively. Rises sharply in grade, but there is plenty of raw talent with this son of Sequalo.
Big Danger: 6 Fiery Heights (Best Odds: $5.50) ran over 1200m here a fortnight back and attempted to lead all the way. He kicked on strongly but was nabbed in the last couple of strides by Big Tree. He can go one better here, especially he is now back up to 1350m.
Roughie: 8 Dandy One (Best Odds: $8.50) ran third in that Big Tree race and he was very good considering he was back in the run and was first up. He has plenty of upside and if they go hard in front, look for this horse to charge.

Race Seven (17:22) : The Flash, By Zing Pop Culture Handicap 1630m:

Big Danger: 1 Lock’s Legend (Best Odds: $5.00) has had a couple of runs now to find his best. The latest came over the mile here a fortnight back when a strong fourth to Oak ‘N’ Arthur. Has a bit of upside, Orman sticks and has gate one.
Big Danger: 6 Honey Toast drops to the mile after winning impressively over 2200m here, where he really powered to the line and was very good. 1600m is no issue and just needs to overcome the tricky gate to be a contender.
Roughie: 3 Volkhere ran over this track/distance a couple of weeks back and was just ridden too aggressively on speed when finishing near last behind Oak ‘N’ Arthur. With a softer steer here, he can bounce back, and he is well weighted.

Race Eight (18:02) : In A Galaxy Far Away, By Zing Pop Culture Handicap (Class 6) 1350m:

Back Me: 1 Kraftwerk (Best Odds: $6.00) ran over this track/distance a month back when sitting on speed and fighting on well when a close up second to the flying Pillar Of Creation. Rises in weight, but huge drop in grade. Wide gate is the only negative. If he can overcome that, he takes care of these.
Big Danger: 2 Beatniks (Best Odds: $6.50) was unwanted in betting when resuming here a couple of weeks, but gee once she got clear near the fence, she produced a lovely turn of foot to get the job done. Not as dynamic first up, but it’s hard to ignore what she did.
Roughie: 13 Gid Up Strop (Best Odds: $6.50) was terrible in his first two runs this in, but was much better at the midweeks at this track/distance when a close up second to Reckless Abandon, who won again last Saturday, so the form reads well, and now this horse has found his, he can go on with it.
