SA metro racing this Saturday returns to the course proper at Morphettville. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out twelve metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out eight metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:17) Wills And Daniel Mdn Plate 1100m
3 Keep Reading (Bet Now: $1.95) is a Team Jolly trained juvenile with race fitness on his side. He debuted two weeks ago at Gawler where he had the dream sit in transit and battled on well when second to dominant winner Taunting, with a big gap to third. Should land in a plum spot and prove to be a leading contender.
15 Our Shinko (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Real Impact filly resuming for Phillip Stokes. Hasn’t raced since the Autumn where she had a two run prep to start her career in Victoria in some tidy races. has trialled/jumped out well leading in and I think drawn wide here won’t be too much of a negative.
8 Strike Eagle (Bet Now: $7.50) gets the Blinkers back on to sharpen him up. His two runs back from a spell have seen him place each time, the latest at Gawler in the Taunting race mentioned above where he was near the speed and battled on okay. He can be near the front and run an honest race.
Race 2. (12:52) Dominant (bm78) 1600m
2 Peloton (Bet Now: $14.00) is capable of bouncing back for Michael Hickmott. Ran over 1500m at Gawler a fortnight ago where he attempted to lead throughout and he did give a mini kick, but tired late when fourth to surprise winner Flying Pierro. Better suited here I feel and he was a few weeks between runs that afternoon, so there should be improvement.
3 Jaguary (Bet Now: $6.00) deserves another chance. He was too bad to be true three weeks back at Murray Bridge. He seemingly had a decent enough run in transit but he didn’t fire a shot and was quite plain behind Irish Butterfly. Found a winning groove prior to that, so not sacking off one ordinary run.
1 France’s Boy (Bet Now: $6.50) has a good record at this track and is a knockout chance. He ran in the Flying Pierro race at Gawler where he was in good spot behind the speed. Presented to win but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to the Jolly galloper. Back on a track he excels at, a win wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 3. (13:27) Furphy (bm78) 2500m
Fitter and up in trip, I’m in the corner of 2 Hasta La Fiorente (Bet Now: $7.50). He ran over 1800m at Murray Bridge three weeks ago and was very good from near last in the run, closing off with real purpose late when third to Irish Butterfly. Quick jump to 2500m, so whether he needs this run, not sure, but he’s got upside and a proven city performer.
3 Mahis Angel (Bet Now: $3.40) has to be respected given he is a last start five length winner in town. That came at Gawler a fortnight back when aided by the inside bias and a good ride from Paul Gatt. That was 2100m and off that, 2500m here should be fine. Now he has found winning form, he can hold it.
10 Turf Man (Bet Now: $61.00) lacks the class of some of these, so not sure he wins, but can certainly entertain him as a first four contender. He ran over this trip last Wednesday at Murray Bridge and was solid late, albeit 10+ lengths from the winner in running fifth. He can sneak a first four spot with luck in the run.
Race 4. (14:02) Tab (bm86) 1200m
5 Pindaric (Bet Now: $2.15) is three weeks between runs for Michael Hickmott since keeping his unbeaten career in tact when a strong winner at Murray Bridge. Yes, Street Tough was unlucky, but this guy was first up and doing work on speed. He’s a winner and will only improve with the run under the belt.
1 Dexelation (Bet Now: $3.80) loves to get his toe in and I think is a key threat. He also comes through the Monash at Caulfield where he was near the speed throughout and battled on quite well when fourth to Red Can Man. Gets in very well after the claim and is the class factor.
6 Sir Kalahad (Bet Now: $6.50) was just too bad to be true last Saturday on the Parks track. Market liked him a lot, but he was beaten 600m out and finished a bad last. Must have been an excuse because the stable are happy to back up a week later, and his best is good enough to win this.
Race 5. (14:37) Gh Mumm (bm60) 1050m
5 Sitting Bull (Bet Now: $6.50) is hard to catch given his racing pattern is to get back, but Sam Burford has him going well. Ran on the course proper here four weeks back and finished off strongly from near last in the run when third to The Big Goodbye. If he can sit closer in the run, he’ll be hard to hold out late.
13 Honey Go Lightly (Bet Now: $8.50) is bursting to win a race. Honest mare that tries very hard and hasn’t been far away of late, her latest run coming at Murray Bridge when beaten narrowly by Kishstar, but loved the way she dug in and surged, just missing. Draws to get a soft run and is a key chance.
17 Akkacan (Bet Now: $27.00) should be suited back home for Jon O’Connor. He had several runs in Victoria and he ran okay, but didn’t really measure up as a winning threat on a few occasions. Last time he won, Moses was parting the sea, but he does have the finale to sneak a first four spot.
Race 6. (15:17) Fleurieu Milk Company (bm62) 1050m
14 Scenic Host (Bet Now: $9.00) looks a progressive filly for Michael O’Leary and confident she can measure up in town. Not sure she beat a great deal in her Bordertown maiden last time out, but given she made a sustained run of about 500m+, she was still strong late and bolted up impressively. Stable can produce a good lightly raced galloper in town and I think she is another.
9 Naleigh (Bet Now: $4.60) should be suited here for Will Clarken. Resumed over 1100m at Gawler two weeks ago and was good from the back against the pattern for the meeting when second to the heavily supported Mutinous, who was fence in run on speed, which was the A1 spot to be. She’s got improvement to come and bigger track, she’ll take beating.
7 Ultimate Victory (Bet Now: $14.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at Murray Bridge. He was back off the speed and while he was never really a winning threat, liked the way he finished his race off behind Zoushine. Gets in well after the claim and should just about be at peak fitness.
Race 7. (15:57) The Junction (bm60) 1200m
13 Tahnee Tradition (Bet Now: $8.00) should appreciate the run under the belt for the Hardacre camp. Met with market support when resuming over 1200m at Murray Bridge three weeks ago and worked home strongly late when second to the hard fit and in form Munster. Off that run, she’s hard to beat here.
Big watch on 3 Preakness (Bet Now: $3.40), having his first run for Michael Hickmott. Former Kiwi that had one run at Sale after arriving from NZ and didn’t fire, then went back to NZ and was just fair. New camp, which do have a good record with these former Kiwis, and should handle wet ground.
7 Lomax (Bet Now: $19.00) is three weeks between runs for Brian Mueller since racing over this trip at Murray Bridge where he got a fair way back in the run but really liked the way he finished his race off behind Munster. Form since has been solid enough and for mine, he’s a knockout chance.
Race 8. (16:32) Irish Race Day Sat 14/8 (bm68) 1200m
4 Munster (Bet Now: $9.00) should prove hard to beat for Michael Hickmott. Was on the seven day back up when racing at Gawler two weeks ago. He was off the speed and chased, trying hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Smart Alick. Strong winner at Murray Bridge seven days prior to that so he can bounce back.
12 Noname Lane (Bet Now: $7.50) is a key threat for me. Will Clarken trained four year old that was backed with real confidence when resuming three weeks ago at Murray Bridge in a maiden and the market got it spot on. He took a little while to get into his work but gee he was strong late when letting down and impressive. He can go on with it.
2 Extra Mile (Bet Now: $8.50) is a query at 1200m, but he does drop a fair bit in grade/depth after racing in a 2MW race at Gawler two weeks ago where he got back against the track pattern and was solid late behind impressive winner Maha, running third. Hard to beat if he sees out the six furlongs.
Race 9. (17:10) Pike & Joyce (bm68) 1800m
9 Melody Man (Bet Now: $2.45) is a Jake Stephens trained gelding that is racing really well at the moment. Ran over 1400m at Murray Bridge three weeks ago where I thought Pannell gave him a peach from off the speed and was there to win when presented. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when a narrow second to Just Folk. Two runs from a break have been at 1400m, so now up to 1800m I like.
1 Tibetan (Bet Now: $6.00) is on the seven day back up for Michael Hickmott and this guy has reacted positively on the back up previously. He ran on the Parks track last Saturday and didn’t stop chasing behind dominant winner Dominus, who was given a 12/10 by Pannell. Only one win from 18 outings, but he is racing better than what that winning strike rate suggests.
10 She’s A Karaka (Bet Now: $5.00) is a David Jolly trained mare that had her first run for the camp at Murray Bridge a few weeks back. Sat back, with cover, and looked to be going easily, before edging wider and gee she was strong late in winning and winning well. Think she only has to hold her form to be around the mark.
