Race 1. (18:15) Hygain Tracktorque Handicap (64) 1000m
5 La Vie En (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes to town off the back of a first up win at Warrnambool where she looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted, making an absolute mess of them on speed and was dominant. Had jumped out super prior so keen to see how she goes at this level.
6 Tonkin (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a key chance. She resumed in a Mornington maiden where she looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted to win and win well. That said, she was somewhat getting the staggers late and the runner up was plain on Wednesday so the jury is out on the form, but she is a filly who has talent.
2 Earth God (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a few weeks between runs for Team Freedman since racing over 1000m at Mornington against the older horses when leading and giving a good sight but just felt the pinch late behind the in form Castellar. He may get trapped wide but if he gets across, he’s dangerous at odds.
Race 2. (18:45) Ascend Sales Trophies Maiden Plate 1000m
10 Just Like Gaby (Bet Now: $SP.00) trials like Tarzan but in her short career to date, she has run like Jane. But, she is so well bred being out of former star mare Loving Gaby and she has been tuned right up for the return with three jumpouts, the latest at Cranbourne where she was jogging in front. Runs up to that, she takes care of these.
3 Appointed (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Team Freedman trained gelding that resumes. He hasn’t raced since the latter part of the Autumn at Caulfield when back and made up some headway without threatening behind Feroce. Given a good break and his jumpout work has been quite strong.
6 Isn’t That Ironic (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a daughter of Capitalist that resumes for Stephen Brown. She has only had one career run, which came on Kyneton Cup Day behind Soft Love when back off the speed and kept finding the line in a good effort in defeat. Can’t find a jumpout for her so watch the market.
Race 3. (19:15) Piper-Heidsieck Handicap (70) 3000m
2 Galilaeus (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door. Just missed out on the win fresh over 2500m at The Valley before going to 3000m there where he looked the winner when presented but couldn’t quite see it through. Hard fit now, he appeals as one of the hardest to beat.
3 Bitcoin (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a key threat. Can make a case to say he goes close to winning the 3000m race mentioned above but got badly held up behind tired runners. He then went to Flemington and didn’t disgrace himself in defeat behind Taramansour, who would be odds on here, so the form reads well and he should be strong late.
5 Zegalo (Bet Now: $SP.00) will have no issue with the trip and comes to town off a win at Mornington where he got the beaut run in transit and finished best to win narrowly but impressively. He’ll have no issue with 3000m…not sure he wins, but a must for exotics.
Race 4. (19:45) Chandler Macleod Handicap (70) 2040m
3 Kind Gesture (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks a big price here I feel. She got a 12/10 from Williams to win two back at Caulfield Heath before going to the Belle Of The Turf at Wyong where she wasn’t 100% happy on the tight track but she stayed on and was good in defeat. Back to this level, back to Melbourne, kind map…good each way gamble.
1 Zambezi Khan (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a few weeks between runs for Team Payne since a win at Flemington on New Years Day when finishing best from off speed to win and win well. Has run well at The Valley previously and overall, this isn’t a deep contest.
11 Ghemme (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a knockout hope. Grahame Begg trained mare that has been kept on ice since Dec 19 at Seymour when racing over 2000m and worked home strongly from near last when third. Tick over jumpout was quite good, she’ll be strong late and has scope.
Race 5. (20:15) Simpson Construction Handicap (64) 2040m
4 Active Duty (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found winning form and he can go on with it for Lindsey Smith. He was bursting to win but kept finding a couple better. That changed at Warrnambool last time where he looked a moral on paper and after a positive ride on speed, he was much too good. He can win again.
1 Capulet (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be around the mark for Team McEvoy. This mare ran over this track/distance last time out when near the speed throughout and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish the job when fourth to Howlin Rain. Thin race this so she commands respect.
10 Speak (Bet Now: $SP.00) has returned well and can threaten at odds. Ciaron Maher trained mare that hasn’t raced since Dec 20 at Cranbourne when off speed and kept chasing in a pretty good effort in defeat. Tick over jumpout was good and the rise in trip is a big tick.
Race 6. (20:45) Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Heat 10 (70) 955m
Market is going to be fascinating here but I am siding with 4 Big Me (Bet Now: $SP.00) for Nick Ryan, who does tend to save his best for The Valley. He ran at Flemington on New Years Day when off speed and kept chasing without threatening behind Layeruponlayer. Yet to win here but I do think his best efforts have come in the two runs here. Hard to beat.
8 Kyle (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the more fascinating runners on the program. Former Hong Kong galloper that is now with Enver Jusufovic and we know the record these ex Hong Kong gallopers have when coming down under. His jumpout work has been strong and B Shinn is booked fresh, so watch the market.
7 The Magistrate (Bet Now: $SP.00) will land on the bunny and take running down after racing over 1000m at Murray Bridge a fortnight back. He gave a solid kick from the front but just couldn’t quite see it through, nabbed late by Yasuke. Good racing style, he takes running down.
Race 7. (21:15) Australia Stakes 1200m
1 Southport Tycoon (Bet Now: $SP.00) has bigger fish to fry but he is a Manikato winner, he has class and I think that gets him home. He resumes for Ciaron Maher, having not raced since the Rupert Clarke when back in the run and made up good headway late behind Kimochi. Jumpout work has been strong, maps perfect…think he wins.
5 Schwarz (Bet Now: $SP.00) is ready to rock and roll. He resumes for O’Shea/Charlton, having not raced since the Rising Fast on Derby Day when down the track and a bit on the plain side late in the piece. Given a break and has trialled up really well for the return. Lands on speed and takes running down.
7 Title Fighter (Bet Now: $SP.00) is flying for Clayton Douglas. 2/2 this time in, the latest win being at Pakenham where he had the suck run in behind before angling clear and knuckled down with purpose late to win and win well. Racing like 1200m suits, so keen to see how he goes as a potential first four contender.
Race 8. (21:45) Marty Synan Mile (70) 1600m
11 Dane On Tour (Bet Now: $SP.00) brings the right form to take this out. Latest run was over 1700m at Flemington on New Years Day where she seemingly had her chance but just couldn’t quite finish the job when third to Zambezi Khan, who would be $1.50 against these, so that form clearly reads well, she maps well…hard to beat.
5 Stupendous (Bet Now: $SP.00) is in ripping form at present for the Kennewell/Yeomans stable and is one of the hardest to beat, having not raced since Boxing Day at Caulfield Heath when on speed and loomed to put the race away but just found one better in Unseen Ruler. Good racing style, she rates highly.
3 Blistering (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise in trip after racing over 1200m at Pakenham last time when off speed and kept chasing in a pretty good effort in defeat I thought behind Typhoon Harmony. The rise in trip In find interesting but overall, this isn’t a deep contest.
