The Golden Rose (1400m) will highlight a fab card of racing at Rosehill this Saturday, with the $1 Million Group l fast becoming a key stallion making race. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:15) Nathan's Famous Hotdogs Handicap (70) 1300m
5 Paret (Bet Now: $2.60) is an exciting looking colt for the Chris Waller team. He debuted last Wednesday at Canterbury and though the margin was only narrow, you had to love the way he put them away and did it without really being fully extended. Really good test here, but he does look a potential blacktype performer.
7 Bright Idea (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Team Cummings trained filly who was given a lovely ride by Penza last time out at Hawkesbury to break the maiden tag. Controlled things from the front, sprinted on the turn and it was painless. Form has been franked with Lugard Road winning (losing on protest) at Bathurst and this girl has enormous upside.
1 Charlie Chap (Bet Now: $23.00) is a talented three year old for the Van Gestel team who scored a dominant win at Hawkesbury before going to Canterbury last Wednesday where the slow tempo was a bit against him but he whacked away okay late behind Beacon. Up to 1300m on the bigger track third up looks ideal.
Race 2. (12:50) Colin Stephen Quality 2400m
4 Admiral Jello (Bet Now: $5.00) is a stayer in really good form at the moment for the Kris Lees yard. He was specked at odds to win the Newcastle Cup last Friday but the tempo was just clearly against him yet he ran a beauty in defeat behind Broadside. Not sure he has the upside of a few of these, but he’s hard fit, in form and 2400m is no issue.
1 Broadside (Bet Now: $2.30) had a sore back for sure first up in the Premiers Cup here where he did a power of work and weakened. He then went to the Newcastle Cup last Friday where Tim Clark gave him a peach on speed and the horse loved it, kicking hard down the straight to claim the win. Looks the leader here. The big negative is the weight pull he has to give.
3 Auvray (Bet Now: $3.20) is racing really at the moment for the Richard Freedman yard. Surprised many with his win two back at Randwick then proved it was no fluke with a gutsy effort despite a slow tempo when second to Broadside. The lack of tempo again is the worry for him but he’s in form, hard fit and gets a weight pull.
Race 3. (13:25) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1500m
3 Majestic Pedrille (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Mark Schmetzer trained mare who did a really good job to win two back at Taree during their Cup Carnival before going to Muswellbrook where she was hard in the market and tried her guts out but just couldn’t finish it off and had to settle for second. Think she is looking for further so the 1500m is ideal and she does have upside.
2 Don’t Give A Damn (Bet Now: $1.85) is a promising gelding trained by Danny Williams. Was heavily backed on debut at Goulburn and duly saluted before backing up eight days later in a Highway over 1200m here and running a very narrow second to the above average Suncraze. Is this all too soon is my query, but on form, he’s the one.
10 Delivered (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Chris Heywood trained galloper who started bolters odds when racing in a Highway here two weeks ago but he defied that and ran a beauty I thought when fourth to Suncraze after getting well back in the run. I highly doubt he can beat these, but up in trip does look an advantage and another that has upside.
Race 4. (14:00) Ranvet Handicap (82) 2000m
3 Up ‘N’ Rolling (Bet Now: $2.05) is a talented stayer for the Waller camp who is three weeks between runs since scoring a comfortable win over 2000m at Randwick. He was stunningly backed to win that race, firming into as short as $1.30 at one point. He still won though and did it with a bit in hand, beating Wahng Wah, who was okay against the tempo last week in the Newcastle Cup. Home track, 2000m, little break between runs…he’ll do me fine.
4 Imanui (Bet Now: $5.00) hadn’t raced since August 12 when racing over 1800m here a fortnight back where he was confidently backed by the punters and for the most part, he looked home under a lovely ride fro Reith but the lack of race fitness just told late as he was grabbed by Quick Defence. Should come right on from that and I think he’ll get the 2000m.
1 Plot Twist (Bet Now: $35.00) is a handy stayer that is first up for the Snowden team. His best form comes over 2400m+, so whatever he does here he will improve on, but I think he could be one to throw in wider exotics, because most of these have found their level, or there isn’t much upside left. This bloke is fresh and has it all in front of him. Doubt he wins, but I’d be including him in multiples.
Race 5. (14:35) Schweppes Shannon Stakes 1500m
1 Good Project (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Group l winner for Chris Waller and I think he got a pass mark in the Theo Marks a fortnight back. Race was totally dominated on speed by Deploy and he just lacked that fitness, running out of condition late. He should come on from that, has class and should be much better with the run under the belt.
2 Mighty Lucky (Bet Now: $31.00) is a little beauty for the Fred Cowell team. He was given no hope in the Theo Marks, and rightfully so given it was a hot lead up to the Epsom and he is better over the mile and a touch further. Still, he ran a bottler to run fifth to Deploy, and he was good to the line and through it. He’s a knockout chance here for sure.
Race 6. (15:15) James Boags Premium Gloaming Stakes 1800m
5 Sully (Bet Now: $8.50) is a smart gelding for the in form Busuttin/Young team who did everything wrong first up at Wangaratta but was clearly far too good for that lot and score a pretty soft win in the end before going to Bendigo where he again did everything wrong yet somehow still attacked the line to win. I think on ability, he’s the best horse in the race. Just needs to iron out some wrongs to make him right.
3 Sanctioned (Bet Now: $3.30) looks one of the hardest to beat here. Godolphin three year old who comes through the Stan Fox here a fortnight back where he never really looked likely but stuck on well in defeat behind the dominant winner Gold Standard. Up to 1800m is ideal, third up with upside…ticks a few boxes.
2 Ace High (Bet Now: $9.00) comes through the Stan Fox and he appears to be ticking over beautifully for the Spring Champion. Just lacked the turn of foot to go with them but you had to like his final 250m when warming up. The 1800m looks ideal and with some tempo in the race, he should come to the fore.
Race 7. (15:55) De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose 1400m
2 Menari (Bet Now: $2.25) does look the obvious. High class colt for Gerald Ryan who has been breathtaking in both runs this time in, the latest coming a fortnight back in the Run To The Rose where he was simply outstanding, running away from his rivals. Still is doing a couple of things wrong and there are still some reservations about him at 1400m. If he relaxes, he runs it out and probably wins. Nothing from the race a fortnight back will turn the tables.
7 Merchant Navy (Bet Now: $8.00) is the x factor here. Smart customer for Ciaron Maher who is unbeaten in four outings. He resumed three weeks back in the McNeil at Caulfield on his home track and gee he was very impressive, sprinting hard from off the pace and finishing best. He is the great unknown, but he is obviously very talented and that McNeil form reads well with Booker running a slashing third in the Danehill.
If there is value to be had, it clearly lies with 11 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $21.00). Kelly Schweida trained three year old who continues to be underestimated but is still running some ripping races. His effort last time out behind Menari was excellent. It was a race where those out the back didn’t really have a chance but he closed off with real purpose and ran good splits. 1400m looks perfect and he’ll be charging late if the backmarkers can run on.
Race 8. (16:35) Golden Pendant 1400m
2 Omei Sword (Bet Now: $4.80) faces her D-Day here. She has promised to be a high class mare but has yet to deliver on that potential. Plenty of excuses for her fresh behind Deploy before going to the Sheraco where she got back on a leaders day yet still rattled off some outstanding splits behind Ravi. If she is close enough on the turn, she wins.
5 Danish Twist (Bet Now: $8.00) is a really good mare for the Kris Lees stable who ran an absolute beauty first up in the Sheraco. You could easily make a case that she should have won. Got badly held up between runners when appearing to be bolting and when she did get clear, she savaged the line. Dry track and cover are the two boxes she has to tick in order to be a winning chance. If she does, she goes close.
11 Berry Delicious (Bet Now: $35.00) is a non winner for the Jason Coyle team but she does try quite hard. She ran over 1400m at Randwick three weeks ago where she got back on a leaders day but I loved the way she closed off very late out wide in arguably the worst ground behind Washington Heights. Saves her best for the Rosehill and if they can run on here, she’s right in the mix.
Race 9. (17:15) Tab.com.au Handicap (89) 1400m
5 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $2.30) is a quality mare for Chris Waller who had really good market support behind her when resuming over 1200m here a fortnight back and the win was aided by the inside gate and Schofield taking advantage of the draw, punching up to hold the back of Tango Rain and from the home turn onwards, you were comfortable. Up to 1400m is no issue and she rates highly.
7 Wayanka (Bet Now: $6.50) is a four year old trained by Chris Waller who got the win via the stewards room at this track/distance a fortnight back. You could debate the protest all day, but the form guide says he won and he did clock fast splits. Hard to knock the way he is going and have to include him.
10 Impavido (Bet Now: $13.00) is the interesting one for mine. Bjorn Baker trained mare who did quite a good job in his first prep, winning on debut and ending the prep in the Derby where he had probably had enough behind Jon Snow. Like what I have seen at the two trials and I like the fact he is fresh at 1400m.
