A strong card of Queensland racing has been assembled to be run and won at Doomben this Saturday, where the drawcard is the $100,000 Listed Nudgee Handicap (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out a metre for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:28) : Quest Breakfast Creek Handicap 1050m:
Back Me: 3 Fallen For You (Best Odds: $4.40) has the runs on the board, so I’ll lean her way. She ran over this trip at the Sunny Coast three weeks back when working home well late behind Just Orm, who went on to run well in the Magic Millions. She is still a maiden, but that first win is just around the corner, and I think it will come here.
Big Danger: 1 Bagus (Best Odds: $5.50) debuted at Ipswich a fortnight back where she sat on speed throughout and careered away for quite a dominant win. Time was pretty slow compared to the other 1000m race, but on face value she was impressive, so I think she can measure up here.
Roughie: 5 Cougar (Best Odds: $2.60) debuts here for Stuart Kendrick off the back of a decent enough trial win on her home track at the Sunshine Coast, and while the time was slow compared to other trials that morning, the margin was decisive and the final split was quick for the morning. Won’t be easy here, but she looks talented.
Race Two (14:03) : Canadian Club Handicap (85) 1110m:
Back Me: 10 Heart Smart (Best Odds: $7.00) resumed over 1050m here behind Jopa and didn’t really get the greatest amount of luck when finishing midfield. His trial leading in was an eye catcher, and a fast run race here will really suit him, as he can produce a brilliant finishing burst.
Big Danger: 6 Kudero (Best Odds: $3.80) is loving life at the moment, winning his past two starts in very impressive fashion, the latest over 1000m at the Sunny Coast when sprouting wings from near last. He has a terrible record at the track, with nothing from seven outings, but he hasn’t been in better form.
Roughie: 3 Lauterbrunnen (Best Odds: $12.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for Robert Heathcoate. He performed very well last time in, in much harder races than this over longer trips. Resumes here with no trials, and though he has an ordinary first up record, he has class.
Race Three (14:38) : Sky Thoroughbred Central Handicap (75) 2200m:
Back Me: Keen here on the Steve Tregea trained 5 Mandryka (Best Odds: $3.00). He won over this track/distance before stepping back to the mile on Friday at Toowoomba, and despite dropping 600m in distance, he was far too classy. Back up to this trip will be an ask, but he is a winner and there is plenty to like about this son of Commands.
Big Danger: 4 Outraged (Best Odds: $5.50) worked home strongly last time out over 1800m at the Sunny Coast when running second to shock winner Cramming, beaten just over two lengths. Untried at the trip, which is the query, but he is knocking on the door to win, and this is a thin race.
Roughie: 6 Kaiser Franz (Best Odds: $7.50) ran over the mile last Wednesday at Ipswich where he was quite disappointing behind Little Long Horn, beaten 6.5L. He is much better than that, so with the extra fitness and rise to a more suitable trip, he can definitely improve here at odds.
Race Four (15:16) : Gallopers Sports Club Handicap 1050m:
Back Me: Really like 5 Aimalac Millie (Best Odds: $14.00). This filly is well above average who was ridden completely upside down due to circumstances on Inverell Cup Day but she was just too good for her rivals. She is best ridden when she is ridden with a sit and can blouse them late. That won’t be easy here at Doomben, but gee she has an engine.
Big Danger: 6 Ra Ra Epic (Best Odds: $4.60) ran in a similar race over 1110m here on New Years Day where she sat on speed and showed a nice turn of foot when asked to win quite comfortably. The tine was quicker than the race Assertory won, and that mare won again last Saturday, so the form reads well and the drop back in trip will suit.
Roughie: 1 Jam Toast (Best Odds: $6.00) has taken care of them quite easily at the provincials at his past two starts, firstly at Roma before going to Rockhampton and bolting up as a heavily backed odds on pop. Rises in depth, but I will be surprised if he doesn’t measure up in town.
Race Five (15:56) : James Boag’s Premium Handicap (0MW) 1350m:
Back Me: I’ll take a chance on the talented Taree based mare 1 Shazza’s Bubbles (Best Odds: $6.00). This Ross Stitt trained six year old hasn’t raced since finishing last behind Fitou after being backed in betting at odds. This looks her right level, and given her record, she doesn’t appear too badly weighted, and she does have class on her side.
Big Danger: 2 Righteous Miss (Best Odds: $11.00) attempted to lead all the way Ipswich a fortnight back and looked home, but she was nabbed in the last stride by in form type Substation. Draws poorly here, but she has a good record at the track and a senior rider takes over now.
Roughie: 9 Venecia (Best Odds: $11.00) ran over 1200m at Ipswich last Wednesday and closed off strongly from the back to run fifth to Castanita, beaten just over a length. Much harder here, but this is a wide open race with many hopes, including herself.
Race Six (16:36) : Girls Day Out Raceday Handicap (85) 1600m:
Back Me: Keen on 7 Spur Le Jouer (Best Odds: $6.00). He was one of the runs on the afternoon on Magic Millions Day, charging home from near last to run fourth to star sprinter Buffering. He has failed at the mile previously, but he hasn’t been in better form, so I think he will get it, and he clearly has the best form on the board.
Big Danger: 3 Glorious Red (Best Odds: $5.00) has really found a purple patch, winning three on the bounce, with the latest coming over 1400m at the Sunny Coast where she was given a lovely ride by McGillivray. Mares that are in form generally stay in form, so she can’t be left out.
Roughie: 9 Gold Horizon (Best Odds: $10.00) has been up for a long time but continues to race quite well. He ran behind Glorious Red at the Sunny Coast and made up a stack of ground from the back to finish just under two lengths from the winner. His two runs here have been super and he will be in it for a long way.
Race Seven (17:16) : Novotel Brisbane Airport Nudgee Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: Going with the James Cummings trained 13 The Special Two (Best Odds: $12.00). This mare resumes after a solid Winter/Spring prep, which yielded a couple of wins, including one in town. She comes here off the back of a couple of quiet trials, and while she lacks the class form wise, she is a Sydney based type and they have a lethal record with hit and run missions, especially mares.
Big Danger: 8 Define (Best Odds: $8.00) spanked them two back at Ipswich before coming here where she was a touch disappointing behind Fasta Than Light after starting a short priced elect. She has performed well at Stakes level before, and this is a very thin blacktype event.
Roughie: 5 Adorabubble (Best Odds: $14.00) ran on Boxing Day at the Gold Coast and stuck to the task quite gamely when running third to Tina Melina, who franked the form on Magic Millions Day. Doesn’t appear to be too many on speed runners engaged here, so I think she’ll be up there without too much pressure, and with the month between runs, she should fresh and ready to go.
Race Eight (17:55) : Samuel Smith & Son Handicap (0MW) 1350m:
Back Me: The Scott Henley trained 15 Hotel Drive (Best Odds: $6.50) on top. All three of his runs this time in have been outstanding, with his last two starts resulting in wins, the latest at Coffs Harbour when bolting up. He has failed in town before, but he looks ready now to tackle it and tackle it strongly.
Big Danger: 9 Bold Attraction (Best Odds: $3.40) ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast where he was well backed at odds, and looked home, but was nabbed late by Glorious Red, who was aided by a peach of a steer. He has a solid record at the track, rock hard fit, in form and should be around the mark.
Roughie: 1 Single Spirit (Best Odds: $8.50) is the class runner engaged here. He is a multiple Country Cups winner who was brilliant in winning the Kempsey Cup first up before running a game second to Finishing Card in the Inverell Cup on New Years Day. Been a while since he has run in town, but this is a very winnable race and his form has been excellent.
