Ascot will play host to a handy eight race card on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (15:53) : Flying Colours Summer Special Handicap (1MW) 1400m:
Back Me: 6 Peggy Sue (Best Odds: $2.10) ran over this track/distance in a maiden a tick over two weeks back and was very impressive in getting the job done. Rises in grade, but this is a very winnable race, draws well and gets the services of Paul Harvey.
Big Danger: 2 Forty Four Red (Best Odds: $7.50) stacked them up in front last start at Bunbury and those slow early sectionals helped him get his maiden out of the way. He has run well in town before and now that he has got the win on the board, he could go on with it.
Roughie: 5 Merrijig (Best Odds: $11.00) ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where she ran a tidy fifth to the potential star in the shape of Lite’n In My Veins, beaten just under five lengths but certainly not disgraced. This is much easier, so she should prove hard to beat.
Race Two (16:33) : Australia Day Cup (78+) 1500m:
Back Me: 3 Vengabus (Best Odds: $2.40) is on the back up from last Saturday where he controlled the race over 1400m and just bolted up, winning by three lengths, beating a harder field than what he faces here. Extra 100m will be no issue and he is the clear horse to beat.
Big Danger: 4 Reflectance (Best Odds: $2.80) ran over 1200m here a fortnight back and closed off strongly against the tempo when third to all the way winner Secret Nova, who crawled them in front. The tempo will be the issue again, but he is only carrying 51.5kg and has a booming finish on him.
Roughie: 1 New Time (Best Odds: $15.00) ran behind Vengabus last Saturday and was given no hope due to that horse crawling them in front. I think this horse will be better when ridden forward, and the speed map does indicate there is a possibility for him to roll forward. He can improve if that eventuates.
Race Three (17:13) : Amelia Park Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 2 Viking Forrest (Best Odds: $4.40) resumed over this track/distance and produced a brilliant finishing burst from the back to win quite impressively. Only can improve off that and meets a similar field here, so the son of Dane Shadow looks the one.
Big Danger: 1 Diamond Tonique (Best Odds: $5.50) was a touch unlucky when second to Viking Forrest given he got badly held up in the straight and by the time he got clear, Viking Forrest had all the momentum. Gets the weight pull and barrier draw advantage, so he ticks the boxes.
Roughie: 7 Recharger (Best Odds: $15.00) debuts here for the Justin Warwick yard off the back of several impressive trials. It is never easy to win on debut in a Saturday race against some handy types, but he looks smart. The worry is that he will start too short in betting.
Race Four (17:50) : Perth Racing #ascothappens Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 1 The River (Best Odds: $2.00) debuted over 1000m here a fortnight back off the back of a couple of impressive trials and produced a brilliant finishing burst to get the job done. Can only improve off that and despite drawing awkwardly, he is the one to beat.
Big Danger: 2 Trademark (Best Odds: $5.50) has been given a six week freshen up since debuting with a close second to talented youngster Swedish Memories, beaten a length. He will do no work from the good gate and is a threat to his stablemate.
Roughie: 4 Four White Fox (Best Odds: $10.00) debuts here for Simon Miller. The son of Foxwedge has trialled twice, the latest on Monday at Belmont when a close second to Kimbo’s Girl in okay time. Draws wide, but looks to have his fair share of ability.
Race Five (18:30) : Membership Pro-Rata Rates Handicap (66+) 2400m:
Back Me: 2 Cougar Express (Best Odds: $2.50) ran over 2350m here a fortnight back and tried hard when a close up second to Don’tgetcaught after sitting outside the speed in a slowly run race. This looks a bit easier and despite rising in weight, he gets the services of Paul Harvey and is the one to beat.
Big Danger: 3 Galaxy Prince (Best Odds: $10.00) ran fifth in that Don’tgetcaught race and he just wasn’t suited by the slow tempo given he has no turn of foot at all. It’s been a while since he has greeted the judge, but this is a winnable race on his best form.
Roughie: 6 Boutique ran (Best Odds: $26.00) over 2200m here during the midweeks and tried hard but had to settle for second to Gracie May, beaten just under three lengths. Her record doesn’t read great, but this is a thin race and she drops 3kg in weight.
Race Six (19:10) : Vale Michael ‘Mick’ Taylor Handicap (60+) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Dendee (Best Odds: $9.00) was outclassed in the La Trice (1800m) before going back to the provincials at Pinjarra and proved too good for her rivals. Back to the city now and back to the 1200m, which isn’t easy, but she has a touch of class and will be strong late.
Big Danger: 2 Travellin’ (Best Odds: $3.00) was given a lovely ride from Johnston-Porter to win here over this track/distance during the midweeks a fortnight ago. He has performed well in Saturday grade before, the apprentice remains on and he draws well.
Roughie: 3 Rikki Tikki Tavi (Best Odds: $16.00) resumed over this track/distance two weeks back and made up some nice ground late when running fourth to Fuld’s Bet, beaten just under two lengths. Drawn wide, but he’ll get back and look to ambush late.
Race Seven (19:50) : WA Bush Fire Appeal Raceday February 20 Handicap (60+) 1800m:
Back Me: 2 Saker (Best Odds: $3.80) was rewarded for his consistency with a gritty win over the mile here a fortnight back. He got held up a touch in the straight but once clear, he really attacked the line and arrived in the last couple of strides. Harder here, but it’ll be shocked to see him not there at the finish.
Big Danger: 12 O’Reilly’s Crumpet (Best Odds: $9.00) also ran over 1500m at Pinjarra at that same meeting in a benchmark race where he sat near last in the run before savaging the line late to run second to Excellently. He’ll eat up the extra trip and stable is low flying.
Roughie: 14 Lolong (Best Odds: $26.00) is a three start maiden who rises to Saturday grade after running a brave second over the 1500m at Pinjarra to Peacemaking. Gives the impression the 1800m will suit, drops in weight and has plenty of upside.
Race Eight (20:25) : Stone Motherless After Race Eight Handicap (72+) 1100m:
Back Me: 14 Volkhoff (Best Odds: $4.20) is loving her racing at the moment, winning two from two this time, the latest coming three weeks back over this track/distance when charging home to get the job done. Whiting remains on and she should do no work again from the gate.
Big Danger: 6 Lenience (Best Odds: $15.00) had every chance last time out sitting behind the leader, who crawled them in front, but he did a tidy job to run second. He’ll get a similar run here from the gate and should be around the mark somewhere.
Roughie: 8 King Closet (Best Odds: $19.00) ran fifth in that race Lenience ran second in, and she just lacked the turn of foot when the leader sprinted and had to settle for a fading fifth. Drawn wide here, so if he can somehow sit back, he’ll charge home and finish off his race better.
BEST BET: Race Eight Number 14 Volkhoff
NEXT BEST: Race Four Number 1 The River
VALUE: Race Six Number 8 Dendee
