The Brisbane Carnival continues to warm up this Saturday at Doomben with a nine race card, three of which are blacktype. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out 5.5 metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:28) Cascade Plate (c3) 1640m
7 Jack The Lad (Bet Now: $2.70) to be in for a really good prep for Chris Waller. Resumed two weeks ago over 1350m here and was excellent out wide, against the bias, when a closing third to Baanone, who found the fast lane and was too sharp for them. Like him up to the mile and finds a very winnable Class 3.
2 Quality Asset (Bet Now: $3.60) is a very interesting runner. He was scratched from a weak race at Rockhampton on Thursday in preference for this, whether that is a sign of stable confidence, not sure. But, he has been dominant in two starts/wins for Jared Wehlow, so keen to see how/if he measures up.
13 Balmaurice (Bet Now: $9.00) can be an improver. On the seven day back up after racing over this trip last Saturday at Eagle Farm where he got back to near last in the run and while he didn’t threaten, he was okay late. Less depth here I feel and getting towards peak fitness, he’s an improver.
Race 2. (12:03) Stradbroke High Tea (bm90) 2200m
7 Youngblood (Bet Now: $7.00) is bursting to win one for Tony Gollan. Looked like it would come two weeks ago here and he was hailed as the winner, but had no answers for the finale of Isabella’s Spring, who found the fast lane on the fence and dashed clear late. Youngblood was only third up there, so you’d like to think there is improvement to come.
Back up in trip I do like for 2 Stardome (Bet Now: $7.50). Game third over 1800m two back at the Gold Coast behind Humbolt Current. He then came back to the mile a few weeks ago and worked to the line pretty well but had no change up speed behind Trevelyan. Back up in distance, he appeals.
5 Traduce (Bet Now: $15.00) should be suited up in trip with the run under the belt. That run under the belt came two weeks back here over 2000m where he looked like he would need the run and that’s how it panned out, but he was okay late behind Isabella’s Spring. Fitter, up to 2200m, his best is good enough.
Race 3. (12:38) Stradbroke Ball Hcp 1200m
1 Yiska (Bet Now: $2.25) is a juvenile with good talent for Lee Freedman. 2/2 to start his career, bolting up on debut at the Sunny Coast before proving that was no fluke with a spank job win over this track/distance at the midweeks. Good test for him against some nice types but hard to knock the way he’s going.
I’ll take a chance in including 8 Johnny Dash (Bet Now: $34.00). He was down to run at Ipswich on Wednesday but was scratched and instead runs here. He debuted at that track where he was smashed in betting that day but failed to fire a shot in a very plain effort. Blinkers go straight on and have to respect the stable.
10 Clairvue Molly (Bet Now: $7.50) is a well bred filly for Tony Gollan that comes to town off the back of a debut win at the Sunny Coast where she was kept quite safe in betting and under Angela Jones she finished best in an impressive display. Needs to improve but certainly in a good camp to do that.
Race 4. (13:13) Princess Stakes 1640m
3 Canadian Dancer (Bet Now: $4.00) is racing like she will eat up the mile. Freshened up when racing over 1350m at Ipswich and must say, the ride from Jaden Lloyd was cool. Waited for the gaps to appear and once it did, the horse exploded and she surged hard late to win. Failed at the mile two back, but I think with a more patient steer, the mile and beyond will be no issue.
Class will carry 1 Mokulua (Bet Now: $3.80) a long way. Has been kept on ice since contesting the Vinery where she found the A1 3YO fillies at 1850m a bridge too far when down the track behind Hinged. Like her back in trip and miles back in grade/depth. Just depends where she gets to from the draw.
4 Teranga (Bet Now: $8.50) is a quality filly for the O’Dea/Hoysted camp that comes into this off the back of track/distance win two weeks ago. Helped by the inside bias, but that aside, she was strong late and strong to/through the line in winning. That was her first look at the mile and she passed with flying colours. Key threat.
Race 5. (13:52) Peter Mcnamara (bm90) 1110m
9 She Can Sing (Bet Now: $4.80) is a talented mare for Michael Morrison that resumed with a strong win on her home at the Gold Coast several weeks ago in the Military Rose. The race was there to be won and she knuckled down strongly late to wear down a hard fit/in form Winside. Like her fresh at the short course and has good upside to come.
16 Delexo (Bet Now: $6.00) is three weeks between runs for Kristen Buchanan since a strong on speed win at Eagle Farm where he appreciated the firm deck, sitting near the speed and proving a bit too good for his rivals in a race where the form out of it has been franked. He commands respect against this lot.
11 Tahitian Dancer (Bet Now: $21.00) looks like she will be winning races in Queensland for Tony Gollan. Rosemont purchased her and I dare say have blacktype aspirations for her, potentially a Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast? First up run behind She Can Sing was a beauty and the tick over trial was a good piece of work.
Race 6. (14:32) Entry Group (bm78) 1200m
14 Stolen Jade (Bet Now: $14.00) has raced well in Queensland previously and should appreciate firmer footing. Found a bottomless at Canterbury last start and struggled to pick her feet up in a total forgive behind Vreneli. Her best is good enough and this is a winnable race.
7 Shamaton (Bet Now: $2.80) is knocking on the door to win. Tony Gollan trained gelding that ran over 1200m two weeks ago at Doomben where he dashed from off the speed and was hailed as the winner, only to be bloused by an unbelievable finale from More Sundays. Like him from the gate, he’ll take beating.
2 Acrobatic (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Kelly Schweida trained gelding that resumes. He had a busy Winter/Spring prep, which ended with a down the track effort at the Sunny Coast behind the then in form Gee Tee Tee. Couple of solid trials to get ready, and anything KWT is riding at the moment has to be respected.
Race 7. (15:12) Mick Dittman Plate 1110m
2 Ingratiating (Bet Now: $6.00) looks beautifully placed by James Cummings. Comes here first up, his last run being the Oakleigh Plate where he ran a beauty in defeat from the back behind Marabi. Quiet tick over trial to get ready for this and this looks a target race, whereas some of these have eyes on bigger fish.
7 Startantes (Bet Now: $8.00) kicks off a likely Stradbroke/Tatts Tiara path so will be better as the prep goes on, but she has class. Looked like she would win the Surround when she loomed but the photo just went the way of Hinged in a thrilling finish. She’ll be strong late. Just depends what sort of start she’ll concede.
13 Putontheredlight (Bet Now: $11.00) is a filly with good ability for Tony Gollan who should prove hard to beat here. One soft trial leading into her resumption two weeks ago here where she was smashed in betting despite drawing wide but she found the fence and charged late to just miss out on the win when second to Coco Rox. Fitter, up in trip, and if she’s within range on the turn, she’ll take beating.
Race 8. (15:48) Tails Stakes 1640m
6 Quantum Mechanic (Bet Now: $4.80) deserves another chance. Ran two weeks ago in the Queen Of The Turf when wide with cover but given the pattern of the track, she had no chance, and she’s better suited on firmer footing, which she gets here. Gets a good run from the gate and stable rarely misfire when they travel.
4 Kukeracha (Bet Now: $4.50) is a Chris Waller trained gelding who looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed in the Doncaster Prelude at Newcastle and was very good from near last in the run I thought behind Mr Mozart. Tick over trial was good, he gets a soft trip from the gate and has a touch of class.
8 London Banker (Bet Now: $18.00) is ticking along beautifully. Resumed two weeks back over 1350m here where he found them a bit sharp but his effort to the line and through it had merit to it behind Last Chance. 2000m+ is when he comes into his own, but stable is in form and he’ll be strong late.
Race 9. (16:28) Brc Carnival Plus M'ship-bm90 1350m
8 Ulysses (Bet Now: $4.00) is racing very well for Tony Gollan. Had to chase a strong speed here two weeks ago and worked very hard to wear down the leader, which he did, but was nabbed late by Last Chance. The run was full of merit. Hard to beat if that run hasn’t busted him.
11 Run For Glory (Bet Now: $12.00) will jump on the bunny and give them something to chase if last run is any guide. Jim Byrne rode to the pattern two weeks back here when leading at a strong clip and for a few strides, he looked home, but tired late. Hard to beat with a touch more harnessing of speed.
3 Never No More (Bet Now: $6.00) is racing really well this time in for Matty Dunn but he can’t quite crack it for a win. Looked like it would come a few weeks back but he just found one better near the peg when beaten narrowly by Ulysses. That was his first run in over a month so you’d like to think there is improvement to come.
