Race 1. (18:30) Simpson Construction Valley Pearl 1200m
7 Of Importance (Bet Now: $6.00) just gets the nod for me in what looks a pretty thin two year old race. Mick Price trains this filly, who was okay on debut in the Chairmans behind Ennis Hill before going to an 1100m Ballarat maiden where she lifted late under Olly and proved too good for a narrow but impressive win. 1200m looks no issue and she has the hard race fitness.
1 Chess Star (Bet Now: $3.50) is on the seven day back up for the Waterhouse/Bott camp after racing over the 1000m here last Saturday where I thought he ran a super race against the track pattern. Wide throughout on a night where on the rail/leading was the spot to be yet he worked home well late when third to Yulong Monoceros. Looks ready for 1200m.
6 Quadriga (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Sebring colt on debut for the Hawkes camp. He trialled up last Friday at Flemington and though the time was nothing flash, I thought he was quite good in the way he went about his business and when asked for an effort, he responded, which is always a good sign for an unraced two year old.
Race 2. (19:00) Let It Ride Punters Club Handicap (70) 2040m
8 Divine Command (Bet Now: $2.50) is on the seven day back up for Darren Weir after toughing it out strongly at this track/distance to win last Friday night under Liam Riordan. Three Strykes loomed large to beat her but she kicked in and just proved too tough and too good. Taking on the boys now but hard fit and in form.
9 Rock Away (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Rachel Cunningham trained mare who has a really good record at the Valley. She comes through the Divine Command race last Friday night where she got back off the pace and tried hard but the race/track pattern was against her when third to the Weir mare. Draws well this time around and gets Williams steering.
10 Sea Spirit is a John Sadler trained gelding who ran over the 2000m at Pakenham last Thursday night where I thought he was ridden a bit too close to the speed but he stuck on okay behind a potential Oaks horse in Semari. Was 1400-2000 that night also with the run under the belt, he should be stronger late.
Race 3. (19:30) Absolute MBA Office National Handicap (70) 1200m
8 Maximus (Bet Now: $3.30) looks a good bet to my eye. Talented horse for the Snowden camp who resumed with a stylish win at Werribee before racing under the lights at Pakenham and bumping into a good one in Brahmos. Since joining the stable, he has shown signs of being a city class horse and he gets a great chance here.
4 Princeton Spirit (Bet Now: $4.40) is the unknown here. First up for the Julius Sandhu stable after a three run Spring prep, which saw him win all three races, the third one at this track/distance when heavily backed. Thought he trialled up sensationally a couple of weeks back behind Missrock in fast time and is already proven here. Has to be included.
3 Haski (Bet Now: $7.50) is the horse who will mind his business just off a likely hot speed and have last look if he gets clear air. Ran at this track/distance last time out and just missed out on the win when beaten narrowly by Castelo. Goes good on the fresh side, draws a lovely gate and gets an in form Fred Kersley steering.
Race 4. (20:00) Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Final 955m
3 Super Too (Bet Now: $1.40) looks a super moral, all things being equal. She ran some electric splits last time out in the Challenge at Randwick and it took the best sprinter in Australia, Redzel, to gun him down. She should just ping to the front here, roll along and proved far too nippy for them. Very keen on her chances.
5 Sunday Escape (Bet Now: $6.00) is a beauty for the Andrew Murray team and while he doens’t win out of turn, he does try very hard. That was the case last time out down the Flemington straight when on speed and battling away quite well in defeat behind Demonstrate. Should get a good run near the speed and he likes the track/distance.
2 Beau Rada (Bet Now: $12.00) has a fab record at this track/distance and I think second up, he can run well. Didn’t shape up well for him first up down the Flemington straight and ran accordingly behind Demonstrate. Much better suited here and from the draw, he can follow the rail/Super Too and be strong late.
Race 5. (20:30) SelfWealth Alexandra Stakes 1600m
1 Seannie (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Busuttin/Young trained filly who has come back to her brilliant best this time in. Resumed with a stunning win here before being luckless in the Typhoon Tracy before going to the Kewney where the bias was clearly against her yet she still rattled off some pretty impressive late splits. Up to the mile is the unknown but off last start, should get it.
3 Palazzo Vecchio (Bet Now: $2.50) has been outstanding in two runs back from a break and looks to have the SA Oaks at her mercy. Luckless in the Kewney a tick under two weeks back, with Olly riding the bias and hoping for the breaks to go his way, which it didn’t but the run was still very good. Not sure the Valley is her track but have to include her.
7 Harmattan (Bet Now: $7.00) is the great unknown. James Cummings trains this filly, who is two for two. Debuted with a stylish win at Sale before going to Pakenham under the lights where she did plenty wrong but her class got her home. She’s bred to eat up a trip, so I’m keen to see at the mile, and she has different form, which is always something you have to be on guard with.
Race 6. (21:00) Ascend Sales Trophies Sunline Stakes 1600m
3 Samovare (Bet Now: $2.80) for me. She has been pretty good this time in for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Resumed with a solid second in the Mannerism behind Silent Sedition before going to the Matron a fortnight back where the bias beat her in what was an ugly watch behind Spanish Reef. Has run well at the Valley, and third up now, no excuses.
4 Spanish Reef (Bet Now: $2.50) has taken advantage of a couple of peach steers from Zahra and Williams respectively to win both races this time in. Lovely ride by Williams to get her the win Matron win last time out, though you could make a strong case that Samovare should have beaten her. Good record at the track and has the runs on the board.
The Weir camp had a couple nominated for the race but they elect to go with the sole runner in 6 Tiamo Grace (Bet Now: $14.00), who was very good first up at Flemington when chasing throughout to run second to King’s Command after getting back in the run. Should eat up the mile and goes well second up. Leading chance.
Race 7. (21:30) William Reid Stakes 1200m
1 Rock Magic (Bet Now: $7.50) is bursting to win a Group l and I think he gets a great chance here. Thought he did a great job first up in the Newmarket in the wrong part of the track behind Redkirk Warrior before running a beauty in the Newmarket behind the same horse. Record at the Valley doesn’t read great but he has run some mighty races. He won’t get a better chance to record a major.
5 Bons Away (Bet Now: $17.00) isn’t really suited at WFA but the way he has come back, he’ll run a beauty, like he did first up in the Oakleigh Plate when working home with real purpose late behind Russian Revolution. Worked sensationally here on Monday and though the WFA query is there, he has to go in on the way he has come back.
Very interested to see how 10 Catchy (Bet Now: $18.00) goes here. She was very good first up in the Oakleigh Plate behind Russian Revolution before going to the Newmarket where she didn’t look comfortable at all and on face value was disappointing behind Redkirk Warrior. One start for one win here and looks to map ideally.
Race 8. (22:00) LED Autolamps Emma Boling Plate 1200m
11 Truly Discreet (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Dan O’Sullivan trained filly that resumes here. This girl is lightly raced but n a short space of time has shown promise all the way through. Loved the way she jumped out at Ballarat, sitting back before getting clear air and winning the trial under minimal pressure. Think she’s forward enough to win.
Lot to like about the win of 2 Easy Beast (Bet Now: $5.50) over 1200m on Adelaide Cup Day last time out. He was dominant in winning under somewhat of an arrogant ride from Michael Walker who had him on speed and would have needed neck surgery the amount of times he looked over his shoulder. Think he can overcome the gate and now he is relaxing better, a hard 1200m is no issue.
14 Tbilisi (Bet Now: $10.00) looks the horse over the odds for me. This bloke was very sharp in winning the maiden two back at Yarra Valley before going to the valley where he got a mile back but finished off with real purpose behind the above average Bowerman. Draws to get good cover and with a likely strong tempo, he’ll get his chance to run on.
