Eight races will be run and won on the Parks track at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:42) Furphy Mdn Plate 1000m
Keen to see 4 Salton Sea (Bet Now: $1.70) for Will Clarken. This Fighting Sun gelding is on debut, after trialling here on October 30 when leading throughout and bolting up, running really sharp time relative to the morning, something I always like to see from an unraced horse. Bit of depth to this maiden, but I think he’s pretty good, so I’m in his corner.
7 Magic Dee (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Zebedee filly for Shane Oxlade that resumes. This girl had a four run prep as a 2YO last season and she wasn’t far off some of the better juveniles in SA, namely Li’l Kontra, who went on to prove herself during the Melbourne Spring, placing in the Blue Sapphire and proving far from disgraced in the Coolmore. Trial was good and this is a winnable race.
Found it hard outside that pair. Perhaps include 3 Qiang (Bet Now: $10.00) as a trifecta chance. Son of War on debut for Gordon Richards and always have to be wary of the stable when they produce one on debut or first up. Trialled last Thursday at Murray Bridge and looked to go about his business well enough I thought. Interesting to note he has been specked in early betting.
Race 2. (14:17) Winning Edge Presentation-bm64 1250m
See no reason to jump off 4 Wings Of Pastrami (Bet Now: $2.70) for Jeff Searle, who is 2/2 this time in. Resumed with a very good win from off the pace to break the maiden tag at Penola before racing over 1200m on the course proper here three weeks ago where he looked in a bit of trouble when Trip sprinted, but she chased hard the final 75m and got up near the peg to win again. Like the way she’s going and up to 1250m, she’s hard to beat.
2 Kayseri (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Team Jolly trained gelding that was confidently backed when resuming in a maiden here on the course proper on Cup Day and under a lovely steer from Paul Gatt, he drove through nearer the inside and proved too good for his rivals in impressive fashion. Harder here, but a stack of upside and no doubt he will improve off that win in a race where the form has been franked.
3 Winsome Voyage (Bet Now: $13.00) is a son of Tavistock that comes here off the back of a placing at Ballarat last start, his home track, when on speed against the older horses and showing some good ticker late to run third to Liberty Song, a hard campaigner. There is depth to this race, so doubt he wins, but perhaps can fill a trifecta spot.
Race 3. (14:52) Aami Hcp (rs0mw) 1250m
Tricky race but going the way of 5 She’s Never Late (Bet Now: $5.50), who resumes for the David Jolly camp. This mare is first up, having not raced since June 15 over the mile on the course proper when down the track behind Rapid Bay, who at the time was a very talented three year old, so I think that’s good form and liked the way she went in a recent trial. I’ll take a chance on her here.
2 Enough Swagger (Bet Now: $2.00) has pretty much been a model of consistency right throughout her career but it’s been more so this time in, always thereabouts. Was back near last off a slow tempo when racing over 1400m here a fortnight ago but despite that, she finished off with real purpose to run second to Jentico. Can sit closer in the run if need and is hard to beat.
Interesting to see how 4 Magnus Magic (Bet Now: $27.00) goes for John Hickmott. This mare had an excellent preparation, with her best efforts coming at Port Lincoln so I dare say that’s where she will be heading sometime this prep. Hasn’t been sighted at the trials and usually needs a run or two, but the stable can produce them to run a positive race fresh, so perhaps one for wider multiples.
Race 4. (15:32) Tab (bm80) 1400m
I think 6 Flop (Bet Now: $3.80) is a near good thing here. The set up is just perfect for her. Was three weeks between runs when racing over 1250m here last Saturday where she lumped 58kg and that probably just told late because she looked the winner but couldn’t quite finish it off when a narrow second to Yankee Eyes. Gets gate one, up to 1400m, Stubby back on and her recent win came on the seven day turnaround.
Now he has his confidence high, I think now is the right time to test 5 Crockett (Bet Now: $3.20) at metro level again, a level he was successful at early on in his career but then really lost his way. McEvoy stable gave him a good break and resumed at Murray Bridge when on speed and proving too good before being beautifully placed at Mount Gambier and winning again. Harder here, but as I said, confidence is up and is proven at this level.
4 Mitrust (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Trusting for Richard Laming that resumes. The best version of this horse is clearly good enough to win but it’s just a matter of how forward he is in condition. Noteworthy that he was scratched from Ballarat in preference for this, so perhaps a lead there? Recent Cranbourne jumpout was solid enough and he can pull out a decent run fresh.
Race 5. (16:12) Fleurieu Milk Company (bm80) 2250m
1 Royal Rumble (Bet Now: $6.50) is unknown at this distance range but in terms of class, I think he’s the one to beat. Three weeks between runs since racing over the mile on the course proper here when just off the speed and didn’t really fire a shot but the winner Secret Blaze is smart and field had depth to it, far more than what he faces here, and the claim for Chau certainly helps.
Thought it was really good placement from the Matt Cumani stable with 3 Crafty Devil (Bet Now: $2.60) when winning here two weeks ago, and it was helped by a very good ride from Kayla Crowther, who didn’t sit and wait. She got going on the turn, built momentum and that’s what won her the race over Jaguary. Not badly treated at the weights at all and is hard to beat again.
6 King Valour (Bet Now: $13.00) is a tough campaigner for Grant Young who will sit on speed and give his all. He ran in the Crafty Devil race from two weeks ago mentioned above when on speed but as soon as pressure was applied, he was one of the first horses beat but stayed on to run third. Runs prior were pretty good so want to give him another look in an open race.
Race 6. (16:52) Terry Howe Printing Hcp-rs2ly 1000m
1 Karlovasi (Bet Now: $9.00) on top. The Jolly camp trains this gelding, who ran over 1200m three weeks ago on the course proper where he was near the speed at a good clip and was one of the first horses beat when down the track behind Debt Collector. This is one of the easier races he has contested in some time and he gets every chance from the gate to bounce back to positive form.
5 Brimarvi Vehero (Bet Now: $2.70) is a Sam Burford trained gelding who is racing in super form at the moment. Won in town three back before finishing runner up to Miss Labelle at her past two, the latest coming a fortnight back at this track/distance when off the speed and finishing off strongly but just missing out on the win. He’s flying this guy and if he can sit that little bit closer in the run, he’ll take some beating.
2 Barood (Bet Now: $8.00) is a tough, tough campaigner for Sue Murphy who is going well. Comes here after racing in the feature sprint at Murray Bridge last time out where the hot tempo saw him run off his legs early and was chasing from a fair way out, but kept on and was good late when a close up sixth to Equal Love. He is an experienced campaigner and is tough.
Race 7. (17:32) Twilight @ Morphettville-bm66 1400m
On top is 7 Playfellow (Bet Now: $20.00) for the Heather Lehmann stable. This gelding resumed on Oaks Day at Gawler over 1100m where he was back in the run but loved the way he closed off and was only beaten just over a length in sixth spot. Has since had a solid 1200m trial to tune up and at 1400m, with Stubby on, I think he’s a decent each way gamble in a tough race.
12 Cazabillie (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Will Clarken trained mare who is third up here, so she should just about be at peak fitness now. Just looked in need of the run first up at Strathalbyn behind an in form Magestic Diva before going to Murray Bridge when leading and giving a decent enough kick but couldn’t quite get the job done when second to Ancient History. Third up, she should be hard fit now and her best is clearly good enough.
Just put a line through the run of 1 Going Gaga (Bet Now: $4.80) at this track/distance from two weeks ago when back off a slow tempo and was pulling hard, which left him with nothing left for the straight when finishing down the track behind Jentico. The effort prior behind Enki suggested a win wasn’t far away, so he’s an improver.
Race 8. (18:10) John Haigh's 90th B'day (bm70) 1550m
With key scratchings, this race just sets up perfect for 2 Fly For Yulong (Bet Now: $2.05) for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Has had two Australian runs, having start one on Geelong Cup Day when a close up fifth to Chicago Cub before going to Oaks Day and the Greys race when leading and fighting on strongly when third to Bumper Blast. Looks to lead for fun and stable finds Vorster to steer. He’s the one to beat.
3 Enki (Bet Now: $5.00) can be a bit hit and miss, but perhaps up to 1550m will suit this gelding. Fast tempo really helped him when winning over 1400m here two back before racing at the same track/distance when back off a moderate tempo and couldn’t finish it off behind Jentico. I think a rise in distance will suit him and hopefully the tempo is more genuine this time around.
6 Disco Rebel (Bet Now: $21.00) is better suited at 2000m+, but this mare is talented. Resumed over 1300m at Penola where she got back in the small field and worked home okay without really threatening behind a talented one in Mista Holyfield. Interesting she had specking there, so she was expected to run a positive race and indeed she did. Up in trip, fitter and a winner on the track, she’s a knockout chance.
