Blacktype racing returns to Doomben this Saturday where it is Tatts Mile Day, with the $100,000 Listed event the feature on a nine race program. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:42) GH Mumm Handicap 1600m
8 South Of France (Bet Now: $7.00) is still a maiden but I doubt that will be for much longer. David Vandyke trained gelding who ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast three weeks back where he got back in the run and never looked likely but was an eye catcher late behind Bring It Home Pop, who franked the form last Saturday. He looks a miler, so this should suit and he has upside.
4 Snapchat Girl (Bet Now: $2.90) deserves a crack at this kind of race. Smart youngster for Les Kelly who broke the maiden nicely at the Gold Coast before backing up eight days later and beating the older horses during the Grafton Carnival. She was strong there at the end of 1400m, so the mile here is no issue.
7 Real Princess (Bet Now: $8.50) is finding it hard to win another race but gee she gets a great chance here. She comes through the Ilovevegas race here a fortnight back where she got back to near last in the run but worked home with purpose to be only beaten five lengths. If she can sit closer from the good draw here, she’ll take some beating.
Race 2. (12:17) Des Lambert Memorial Cup (75) 2200m
1 Loving Home (Bet Now: $4.00) on top but with no confidence in a real dartboard affair. Chris Waller trained stayer who ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he did a power of work on speed from the nasty gate and was a beaten horse 200m out behind Get On The Grange, who franked the form with a ripper in the Grafton Cup. On his best form, he’s the one.
3 I Feel Good (Bet Now: $3.90) does look the obvious threat. He ran second in that Get On The Grange race and did a really good job to get as close as he did. Got a bit lost on the turn and lost his spot in the run whereas those around were making their move with momentum. I think Lloyd will make amends and put him into the race.
10 Splendid Stryker (Bet Now: $23.00) comes here with inferior form, but one thing we do know is that he will stay all day and is trained by a bloke very good at producing stayers. This horse ran over this trip during the Rocky Carnival where he slogged it out best in a real grind to the peg. He does rise in grade, but I think he has to be respected here.
Race 3. (12:52) Functions @ Tatts Handicap 1110m
13 La Vida Loca (Bet Now: $3.70) clearly on top for me here. I’m really keen on this filly. First starter for the Gollan camp who looked okay in her first trial and then last week…wow. They don’t trial much better. Could have won by ten but was throttled down the final 150m and ended up winning by 3.5L. Very keen to see what she does here.
5 Timberley (Bet Now: $3.90) is a smart looking type for the Bryan Dais yard who resumed in a maiden at Rockhampton and though I doubt he beat much, he absolutely spanked them by nearly five and ran much quicker time than the other two 1100m races on the card, which speaks volumes for a two year old. He can measure up here.
18 Umberto (Bet Now: $7.50) interests me here. Tony Gollan trained gelding that is first up after a two run prep in the Autumn where he didn’t really fire despite being well backed on debut. Has looked very sharp in a couple of trials here. Would have loved a bit of give in the track for him because I think he is a horse, on breeding, who will be better when he gets his toe in.
Race 4. (13:27) Cartlon Draught Handicap (Class 6) 1000m
I think there is some value here in the shape of 10 Dylan’s Luck (Bet Now: $15.00). Former Lindsay Hatch trained gelding that had his first run for the Paddy Cunningham yard at Ipswich on July 7 where he was soft in betting and the market got it right as he struggled on the heavy 10 for fifth. Much better on a firmer surface here and he can fire second up.
6 Powerful Saga (Bet Now: $3.50) is a consistent gelding for the Helen Page yard who is always thereabouts and strikes a winnable race here. He has raced on his home track at the Gold Coast throughout 2017 and has been far from disgraced every time he steps out. He ran a fortnight back over 1200m on a heavy track where he sat on speed and just tired late when fourth to Hidden Rose. Back to 1000/dry track and Doomben, where he likes racing, should see him prove hard to beat.
If they overdo it on speed, then 3 Denarius (Bet Now: $6.00) is your horse. Quality galloper that resumes for the Brian Wakefield camp and he is better than Class 6 grade so it will be interesting to see what he does here. He has looked very sharp in a couple of trials and as I said, he’s the one to beat if they go silly on speed.
Race 5. (14:07) UBET Plate (Class 3) 1200m
12 Magic Diamond (Bet Now: $2.50) clearly gets the nod for me here. Talented mare for the Matty Dunn yard who did a very good job fresh to get as close as she did given she was horrible to begin with and at the 900m start at the Gold Coast…that’s not ideal. Charged home to run fourth. She can atone here with a cleaner start.
7 Malvern Estate (Bet Now: $6.50) is a handy three year old gelding for the Desleigh Forster yard who looks one of the hardest to beat here for mine. Took on a field of four over 1200m at the Sunny Coast last start and though he looked hopeless on the heavy track, his class got him home. Doomben 1200m/firmer footing will help big time, as will the little break between runs to recover from that gutbuster.
14 Lady Cromac (Bet Now: $15.00) debuted at the Sunny Coast on May 28 over 1000m and came with a well timed run from the back to win. She was accepted/scratched a couple of times since but ran at the Gold Coast where she looked hopeless on the heavy track and couldn’t pick her feet up behind Hidden Budget. On firmer ground here, she can bounce back hard.
Race 6. (14:47) Stav, Abbi & Matt With Oshers Handicap 1200m
4 Irish Constabulary (Bet Now: $3.40) is a tough, tough galloper but he is racing so well at the moment. This will be his third run in as many weeks but he seems to be thriving on the hard racing. Too good for them at this track/distance a fortnight back before backing up seven days later and bumping into Tumbler. Looks the safe way to go.
1 Charlie Boy (Bet Now: $8.00) is the very interesting runner for me here. High quality sprinter that was formerly with Team Snowden but is now with Tony Gollan and I think he can run a race here fresh. On his best, he’s better than these, and he has been tuned up for his return with a couple of sharp trials. Respect any market moves.
5 Sony Legend (Bet Now: $9.00) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1000m at the Sunny Coast where he got back and in a pocket and though he didn’t really have the greatest of luck, his effort was still a bit below par behind Badajoz. I think firmer footing/1200m are big ticks, and he loves Doomben.
Race 7. (15:27) Sky Racing Tatts Mile 1600m
It’s hard to look away from 2 Sheiswhatsheis (Bet Now: $2.90). This mare can be a bit hot and cold at times but gee she was so impressive a fortnight back at this track/distance, dominating the race from the front and going on to spank her rivals by over five lengths. I doubt anything from that race will beat her here, and that is the right form reference.
3 Crack Me Up (Bet Now: $2.20) takes on the older horses here but he is a talented three year old who should measure up. He was superb three weeks ago in the Sunny Coast Guineas, ridden a treat on speed by Browne and comfortably beating his rivals. Doesn’t have to lead, but last start showed he has versatility.
7 Chandana (Bet Now: $23.00) had her first run for the Matty Dunn yard over 1350m here two weeks ago and her run was better than what it looks on paper. She was never really in the race from the sticky draw and a tardy start but she was good late and through the line. Up to the mile looks ideal and if she can sit closer in the run, she can threaten.
Race 8. (16:07) Carlton Mid Handicap (75) 1350m
Siding with 2 Cornrow (Bet Now: $8.00). He ran at this track/distance a fortnight back where he was hard in the market but didn’t really let down at all after covering ground and it was a raced dominated by those nearer the speed. Crying for dry weather and if he does get it here, from the good draw, he can bounce back hard.
4 Monster Of Energy (Bet Now: $4.40) was given a lovely ride by Whiteley to win the Beaudesert Cup two back before going to the Bushy race here where he got back but worked home strongly. Draws to get a suck run behind the speed and Lloyd takes over now. Ticks alot of boxes here.
12 Shipwrecked (Bet Now: $8.00) is a nice type for the Gollan camp who ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast three weeks back where I didn’t think he had the greatest of luck in the straight. Yes he had clear running, but it was near the inside and that clearly wasn’t the A ground. Much better record here and I think he should be respected.
Race 9. (16:42) Winning Edge Presentations Handicap 1350m
11 Real Classic (Bet Now: $11.00) rises sharply in grade but I think he is a leading contender here. Toby Edmonds trained three year old who was good two back behind Divine Dice before racing in a Class One at the Gold Coast where he should have won but just had no luck after a horrible start. If the breaks go his way, he’s right in this.
4 Care To Think (Bet Now: $2.60) is an above average gelding for the Matty Dunn yard who should take some beating here. This three year old ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast three weeks back where he got back to near last in the run and came wide but surged hard to just miss out on picking up Prioritise. Back up to 1350m is perfect and he is a clear threat.
Gee if you backed 3 Raja Ampat (Bet Now: $8.50) a fortnight back here, gee it was a tough watch. He was heavily backed to win the race but after a tardy beginning, he got back to near last in the run and Browne tried to ride for luck…he got none of it and it was like a barrier trial. Orman takes over now and with better luck here, he can knock these out.
