Eight races will be run and won at Belmont this Saturday where it is Belmont Classic Day. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out half a metre from the 800m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (14:43) Juicebox.com.au Handicap (72+) 1200m
Not the most inspiring race to kick off the card but I think 2 Candlelight Star (Bet Now: $4.80) can win this. Justwin Warwick trained gelding who did a good job here against the tempo two back behind Flying Time before backing up a week and working home late again behind Profit Street. Third run in as many weeks, but he seems to like the hard racing.
4 The Celt (Bet Now: $4.00) comes through that Flying Time race a fortnight back mentioned above and this three year old was pretty good in defeat. Given every chance in front, dictating terms, and rightfully gave a good kick but was no match for the hard/seasoned campaigner Flying Time. Maps well again here and the field isn’t as strong.
6 Spin Da Wheels (Bet Now: $15.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but he does strike a thin race here. Hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing at this track/distance where he sat midfield and didn’t really do a great deal behind Meteoroid. On his best form, he’s up to these, and as I said, this race has no depth.
Race 2. (15:23) Vale Roy Leonhardt Handicap 1000m
2 Snow Lord (Bet Now: $2.70) gets the nod for me here. This Team Williams galloper is first up here after a ten week break where he raced over 1200m at Ascot and raced liked a tired horse behind The Celt. Trial win at Lark Hill was very sharp recently, bolting up and running time, and Pike rides.
1 Atacama Sky (Bet Now: $3.00) is a talented gelding that resumes for the Simon Miller yard. This three year old hasn’t raced for 22 weeks since racing over 1000m at Ascot where he did a power of work on speed and felt the pinch late behind Undisclosed in a race which has seen three subsequent winners. Two trials to tune up, draws well and can produce a run fresh.
8 Patapus (Bet Now: $18.00) did a really good job in defeat here first up three weeks back when wide most of the way on speed. He then raced last Saturday and looked as if he was a bit flat behind A Knight Of Pro. The first up run was too good to ignore so be wary of the third up bounce back.
Race 3. (16:03) James Boags Premium Plate 1000m
1 Cognac (Bet Now: $5.00) is a tough, tough youngster for the Paul Jordan yard. He is on the seven day back up after racing here last Saturday over 1200m where he attempted to lead all the way and to his credit he gave a really good kick but couldn’t quite run out the six furlongs. Back to 1000m, looks the leader and should prove hard to hold out.
8 Danes Maree (Bet Now: $2.10) had confident market support when resuming at this track/distance last Wednesday and the punters got it spot on as she led and bolted up under Sky Bogenhuber, beating home an above average Arcadia Prince. Pike takes over now and she only has to overcome the wide draw to be a threat.
5 Turbo Power (Bet Now: $7.00) is a handy enough youngster that resumes for Neville Parnham. He raced twice during the Autumn, starting off in the magic Millions behind Lucy Mae before a strong fourth at Ascot. Trial win here last Monday was very good to the eye and he appears forward enough to go well fresh.
Race 4. (16:38) Tabtouch Handicap (1MW) 1000m
3 Bells Tower (Bet Now: $5.00) on top in a nothing race. This David Harrison trained sprinter is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where he led at a pretty good tempo and kicked hard but was nearer the inside and on that day, it was the quicksand and he faded late. Back on firmer ground, back to 1000m and Pike on, he ticks a few boxes.
2 Cherie Amour (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented mare who is rising eight years of age but is racing in nearly career best form. She ran at this track/distance four weeks ago where she was wide with cover before presenting wider and launching late to just miss out picking up Vandemonian. Draws a lovely gate here and Pateman is riding superbly at the moment.
5 Vandemonian (Bet Now: $10.00) won that race mentioned above before racing again a fortnight back where he didn’t have the greatest of luck in the straight but was still good in a strong race behind Pop Hero. This looks a drop in depth for him and the speed in front of him should give him every chance.
Race 5. (17:15) Auto Classic BMW Handicap (66+) 2200m
4 Caralabek (Bet Now: $7.50) clearly on top for me here. Quality staying gelding for the Durrant/Miller who is getting close to peak fitness and a win is definitely near. This horse ran at the midweeks over 2100m a couple of Wednesdays back and tried hard on the soft track but had to settle for second to Queen Of Tease. He should come right on from that and rates highly.
3 Macavity (Bet Now: $10.00) rises back up to city grade but he is a proven performer in town. He went back to the provincials at Kalgoorlie last start over the 1760m and aided by a lovely ride from Kate Witten, he surged hard late to win. Inconclusive was his first effort at this trip last prep but I think he will get it.
12 Scooner (Bet Now: $14.00) is a bit hard to trust for Simon Miller but he has been thereabouts since joining the Simon Miller yard. He ran over 2100m here a fortnight back where he got off the pace in the run and tried hard but just lacked the turn of foot when third to Jetoomy. He is knocking on the door. Can win without my money though.
Race 6. (17:50) JJ Richards & Sons Handicap (1MW) 1400m
With the give in the track, I’ll side each way with 10 Bevel (Bet Now: $13.00). He has been given nearly two months off since racing over the 1300m at Northam where he got back in a slowly run affair and couldn’t come on. He is a horse who can pull out a run fresh and being by Blevic, the soft track will be no issue.
8 Fire Detonator (Bet Now: $4.80) is a progressive three year old gelding for the Sharon Miller yard who is putting together a tidy little record. He hasn’t raced for three weeks since racing over the mile here where he got back and closed off hard late behind Election. Back to the 1400m is a query, but with the right run, he can threaten.
3 Hakuna Matata (Bet Now: $61.00) is a handy staying conveyance that resumes for the Ross Price yard. His best form is at 2000m+, so he might need a run or two before we see his best, but I think for multiples, he is a must include because he can pull out a run fresh, and overall, this is a thin race.
Race 7. (18:25) Belmont Classic 2200m
1 Gatting (Bet Now: $1.85) should be taking care of this lot with any kind of normal luck. He was enormous a fortnight back in the Aquanita behind Variation before backing up seven days later, taking on the older horses and getting the job done there. That should harden him right up for this assignment and is the clear horse to beat.
10 Fontainebleau (Bet Now: $7.50) is a classy filly for Team Williams who takes on the boys here but I am confident she can measure up. She comes through the Belmont Oaks where she was given a lovely ride from Glenn Smith and she always looked to have the race in her keeping despite the margin only being 3/4. Confident she can go close.
13 Fast As The Wind (Bet Now: $51.00) is another quality filly, this one trained by the Durrant/Miller yard. She also comes through the Belmont Oaks where the tempo was clearly against her and she had to stick near the rail for luck, which for the most part she didn’t get, and she is a filly who needs to build momentum. She can be a knockout here with the right run.
Race 8. (19:00) Toll Handicap (72+) 1600m
7 Luke’s Gold (Bet Now: $5.00) was a surprise drifter in the market when racing over this track/distance one June 24 where he had three wide cover and launched late to get another win on the board, albeit narrowly. Little break between runs, but he remains down in the weights after the claim and strikes a winnable race.
1 Ripper Rio (Bet Now: $4.80) is a talented type for Team Williams who was eight weeks between runs when racing over 1200m here a fortnight back where he got held up behind runners and he is the sort of horse that needs to build momentum. He can’t get pocketed. Wide gate and Pike on will ensure that doesn’t happen.
11 Cougar Nights (Bet Now: $27.00) is a talented stayer for the Michael Lane yard who could well be gearing up for a crack at the Kalgoorlie Cup so I am sure whatever he does here, he will improve on, but his two runs this prep, over unsuitable trips, have been eye catching and getting out to the mile now, I think include him in multiples.
