A strong eight race card has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday where it is WA Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (14:24) : Tabtouch Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 3 Get The Vibe (Bet Now: $2.90) debuted at the midweeks at this track/distance 24 days ago for Jim Taylor where she showed really good speed to lead them up comfortably before giving a really good kick in the straight to cling on for a strong and determined victory. Looks the leader here and should get a cheap furlong or two.
Big Danger: 4 Danes Maree (Bet Now: $1.80) is a nice looking filly that debuted in the same race mentioned above and her effort was quite tidy. She had the charmed run behind the speed and tried very hard but couldn’t quite finish it off. Should come on from that and rates highly here in the small field.
Long Shot: 1 Little Hercules (Bet Now: $8.50) has been given a five week freshen up since racing in the Perth Stakes where he just looked outclassed. The break between runs should do him the world of good and if he brings his prior form, he would take a power of beating here. Fitness levels are the worry.
Race Two (15:03) : Schweppes Handicap (1MW) 1400m:
Back Me: 9 Elegant Blast (Bet Now: $2.60) is a classy animal for the Warwick camp who comes here off a little break. Really caught the eye first up in a Stakes race at Pinjarra before racing here and coming down when a hard favourite. Has since trialled up well and really, on her best form, she’s a bit too good for this lot.
Big Danger: 1 Key To Fame (Bet Now: $6.50) is a handy type for Simon Miller but is just struggling to put it all together for a win. Ran here two weeks back where he sat on speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when finishing midfield behind Majinika. He is knocking on the door to win a race and I think he gets his chance here.
Long Shot: 5 Forseen (Bet Now: $15.00) is on the quick back up after racing over the mile on Good Friday where he ran over the mile at a pretty good clip and that speed just left him gassed in the straight. Back to 1400m suits and he maps very well.
Race Three (15:43) : Amelia Park Handicap 1400m:
Back Me: 2 One Short (Bet Now: $6.00) is a classy three year old for the Steve Wolfe yard who was first up since the WA Guineas with a dominant win on his home track at Albany where he was ridden with a bit of arrogance yet won so impressively. Very keen on his chances here against an even bunch.
Big Danger: 1 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $7.50) is a tough three year old for the Parnham yard who ran over this track/distance three weeks back where he tried hard against the older horses and stuck on well behind Ripper Rio. Back to his own age now and loves a fight. Ticks all the boxes for me here to go close.
Long Shot: 9 Prize Catch (Bet Now: $31.00) rises sharply in grade but I think he can measure up here at a price. He ran over 1200m at Bunbury a tick under two weeks back and tried hard when a close up fourth to Chengdu. He has run well in town prior and the small field will aid his winning claims. Definite threat.
Race Four (16:23) : Point2 Solutions Dallaglio Rugbyworks Handicap (1MW) 1000m:
Back Me: 4 Remember Berlin (Bet Now: $2.80) for me here. Talented four year old gelding for the Simon Miller yard who has been excellent in two runs back from a break, the latest coming at the midweeks here a tick over two weeks back when ridden a treat near the speed and fighting on quite well. Looks hard to beat.
Big Danger: 2 Brackets (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented yet frustrating galloper for the Durrant/Miller yard. Has only been fair in two runs back from a break, the latest coming three weeks back at this track/distance when a big flop. The big key for this bloke is that Pike steers. Just needs to overcome the tricky gate.
Long Shot: 3 Distant Memory (Bet Now: $8.50) is a handy mare that has been just okay in two runs back from a break but being third up now, she could be ready to show her best. Ran here a fortnight back and had the charmed run behind the speed but just couldn’t quite finish it off. Tipping she will be much more fitter now and is a chance at odds.
Race Five (17:03) : Yellowglen Handicap (66+) 1600m:
Back Me: 7 By Decree (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented mare who can mix her form but when she brings her best form, she’s city grade. Ran in a mares race at Geraldton last time out where she sat on speed and just felt the pinch late. She’s better when ridden with cover and if that can eventuate here, she will take some beating.
Big Danger: Looks a good race for the three year old galloper 9 Minus Looks (Bet Now: $3.20) but for mine he is rock bottom odds. He ran over 1500m here a fortnight ago and did a really good job in defeat I thought when fourth to Varaition. Third up now so he should be ready fitness wise and strikes a winnable race. If we got $5, I’d have him on top.
Long Shot: 1 Saker (Bet Now: $10.00) will welcome the drop in depth after contesting some quality events in all three runs this time in, the latest coming at this track/distance two weeks back where he just found the class a bit much when down the track behind the in form Pushin’ Shapes. He has the class factor on these and hopefully they press forward in a race void of tempo.
Race Six (17:40) : Diggers Cup (78+) 1400m:
Back Me: 5 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $7.50) has been up longer than Ron Jeremy but he is just racing so well at the moment and can’t be ignored. On the seven day back up after racing over this track/distance last Saturday where he was given a peach of a steer off a hot speed and came with a well timed run. He can continue on his winning ways.
Big Danger: 1 Red Ora (Bet Now: $7.00) is the clear class runner here and has to go in the numbers. He ran over 1500m here in the Grandstand Cup last time out and tried hard but couldn’t quite get the job done when third to Man Booker. This is a massive drop in grade, he draws well and gets a leading apprentice steering.
Long Shot: 4 Corporate Larrikin (Bet Now: $10.00) is a greybeard who loves tough racing so this is the perfect scenario for him here. He ran in that race won by Settlers Creek last Saturday where he led at a strong tempo and gave a good kick but was nabbed late. He will be leading here and giving a tremendous sight.
Race Seven (18:15) : RSLWA WA Cup 3200m:
Back Me: All signs point to 2 Dark Alert (Bet Now: $1.45) here as the standout not just in this race but the entire program. Had a charmed run behind the speed in the Pinjarra Cup and once Pike gave him clear air, he shot right away to spank them and smash the record. Two miles looks no issue and he is the clear horse to beat.
Big Danger: 5 Chill The Champers (Bet Now: $16.00) is a three year old taking on the older horses but he shouldn’t be ignored here in terms of multiples. Started long odds in the Derby a fortnight back and did a really good job in defeat behind Gatting. Stable wouldn’t run unless they thought he could run it.
Long Shot: 6 Le Schiller (Bet Now: $16.00) is a stablemate of the top tip who is probably outclassed here but he is tough and stays all day. Forget his last start effort given he was around midfield and wide with with no cover for the trip. Like most here, an unknown at two miles but I am respecting the stable.
Race Eight (18:55) : D’Orsogna Italian Raceday May 20 Handicap (72+) 1200m:
Back Me: Looking for a horse to sit off a hot speed and close late, which fits the criteria of 5 Red Paddy (Bet Now: $6.00). Been given an eight week break after a pretty solid Summer prep where he race very well, with a couple of wins in there. Goes well fresh and he will be very strong late. Leading contender.
Big Danger: 10 Cuanzo (Bet Now: $9.00) is another that will be savaging the line late. Ran at this track/distance a fortnight back and was closing off hard as if he was going to win then got badly held up late behind Majinika. Barrier one is the concern, but if the breaks go his way, he will look the winner late.
Long Shot: Very interesting runner here is 4 Furious Dame (Bet Now: $7.00). Talented mare that is first up here and is an absolute speed demon. She will be leading this and comfortably. I had her marked down as a 1000m horse, so 1200m fresh is an intriguing ploy. She will look the winner. Last 150m will be her test.
